ten-month Roman calendar.Every year August ends on

    Listen With Your Eyes!

    The body has a language

    of its own. We communi-

    cate messages using our

    facial expressions, ges-tures, body movements,

eye contact, and posture.Remember that glareyour parents gave you

    when they wanted to

    send you a message?

    Be aware of your non-

    verbal cues as you com-

municate with your audi-ence. The larger the audi-

    ence, the larger the ges-

    tures should be.

    Observe comedians, poli-

    ticians, and pastors as

they communicate arange of emotions; hu-

    mor, displeasure, pas-

sion. Listen to them care-fully with your eyes!

Drumming the fingers on the table and

continual tapping of the feet on the floor

    are often misinterpreted by professional

speakers as boredom signals, but in fact

signal impatience. If you are addressing a

group of people and see these signals, astrategic move must be made to get the

    finger-drummer or foot-tapper in-

volved in the conversation to avoid his

negative effect on the other listeners. Any

audience that displays boredom and impa-

tience signals together is telling the

speaker that it is time for him to end.

    Speechcraft at Satilla Community Services

On Thursday, July 26th, staff at the Satil-

    la Community Services (SCS) completed

    a Toastmasters Speechcraft program con-

ducted by members of the Okefenokee

Club over six lunch-hour sessions. Kathy

Odam, President of the club, closed the

session with a five-minute talk on proper

    word usage and grammar.

    Veteran Toastmaster and Coordinator of

the program, Addie Crews, presented cer-

tificates to participants and also McDon-

ald's coupons courtesy of past Toastmas-

    ters President, Dave Howe.

    The Speechcraft program gave club

members new opportunities to introducethe fundamentals of public speaking to

non-members and talk about the benefits

of joining a Toastmasters club. It also

gave participants from SCS a taste of the

    Toastmasters experience outside of regu-

    lar club meetings.
