From the President

Godt Nyttår alle sammen! Happy New Year

everyone! For many of us, it’s a time to reflect

on the past and look towards the future. Each day

brings us a new beginning. What happened and

what might happen? Did we learn anything from

the past that we can use? Can we and will we

change anything in the coming year?

Tradition calls for us to make New Year’s

Resolutions; in a light hearted manner of course!

I’ve never thought much about that, but if some of

you need help, I can offer some friendly advice and what I’d like to

see you do differently! Uff da! All kidding aside, we have so much to

look forward too.

Our 300+ Sverdrup lodge members have 300+ wants and needs for

2018. Some will be our choice and some will not. Life has a way of

moving in directions that we didn’t choose from time to time.

That brings me to the often quoted and sometimes framed; Serenity

Prayer. A Google search will find many versions; some attributed to

an American Reinhold Niebuhr. But I think it can be summarized to

“Take it one day at a time, assess the situation, change courses if you can

or accept it as change, knowing this life is short and we look toward the

final destination with faith in our hearts.”

Put your best foot forward in 2018 and make the best of your life

and help as many people as can. But also learn to accept help with a

gracious heart and always say “Please and Thank You”. Hadde bra

og takk for meg.

Why Life Insurance After the Kids are Grown and the Mortgage

is Paid? While many of today's seniors have saved for retirement, many are

coming up short of funds or the fear of running out of money.

Interest rates have been low and people are living longer than ever

before.

Let’s look at Ole and Lena. They both are drawing Social Security

checks, Ole has a pension and they have modest savings but that

has been drained with higher expenses every year. The condo is

paid for, they are driving a 5-year-old car and finances are mostly

manageable.

A few years later Ole gets sick, he ends up in the nursing home

and passes away a year later. Poor Lena, she is sad and lonely. She

also has lost one Social Security check, she only gets half of Ole’s

pension, the savings is gone because it was needed for the nursing

home bills. The car is now getting older and the condo fees and

taxes keep going up.

The good news is Ole had life insurance with Sons of Norway!

Lena will be fine financially. The lost income can be replaced, the

savings has been restored and Lena can afford a new car. She still

misses Ole but doesn’t have the burden of financial worry.

By the way, the kids are so appreciative that dad was looking out

for mom even after he was gone. Lena is welcome to see the

grandkids whenever she wants but she can continue to live in her

own world and not move in with any of them.

Convention Planning 2018

Committees Convention Chair Jerry Saude has called a committee

meeting for Thursday January 4. Come see and

participate. We will meet for one hour and then

schedule the next meetings as needed each month.

Tubfrim There are many ways in which we are asked to assist

our fellow human beings who are in need.

Participation in the Tubfrim program is one of the

more simple yet successful ways to do just that.

Tubfrim is an organization in Norway that resells

cancelled stamps and donates the proceeds to help

children with disabilities. Sons of Norway is proud to

support Tubfrim in their work to support children in

need.

The lodge extends a thank you to Jeannette Radig for

her years of service in heading up Sverdrup’s Tubfrim

program and welcomes Erling Olson as our new

chairman! Bring your cancelled stamps to a social!
