Railway Design Terminology

Cant is the change in elevationof rails in the horizontalcurvesin a railway (millimeters). (Cant is calculated verysimilarly as the superelevation in Roads). Normallyoutside track is lifted and the inside track stays fixeddepending the speed of the train.

Cant and Cant Defficiency

Theoretical / Equilibrium cant is11.8 * {Design Speed}^2/Radius

(Not applied in most case,trains with different speed use the

same track sometimes)

Cant deficiency is a result whena train speed on a curve is greaterthan the speed for which is modeledfor tolerated limits (or criteria)
