TrustSustainability

As a business owner-managed company we can always invest in projects that also maintain long-term employment within the region – our paper machine is an example of such. The stability of a successful private company is beneficial to both our employees and our cus-tomers. We are a partner that you can depend upon.

In our paper machine we have the newest technology which enables us to achieve maximal efficiency using minimal energy consumption. Zellst-off Pöls AG has invested heavily over the years in various sustainability projects for the pulp mill and due to these investments, our paper has the lowest air/water/emission values and the lowest carbon footprint.

We see our respon-sibility not only in compliance with legal standards and require-ments, but take this in all areas much further.

Responsibility Transparency

We know that our paper as part of your offering must satisfy all requirements, which are placed on you and your product. Supply Chain Responsibility is increasingly everyone’s responsibility – and one we all carry on behalf of increas-ingly demanding customers and regulators. With Starkraft you have a reliable partner at your side.

At Starkraft we never forget that our customers have something to sell and that our products, and how they are made, are part of what they offer. It matters to us that the extended supply chain is confident in our Environmental and broader Corporate Responsibility and that we make it easy for customers to access our knowledge and data – we call it “Extended Responsibility”.

best raw materials

You can rest assured that we provide due diligence and are committed to sustainable pro-curement. We always know the origin of our timber and buy only certified or controlled wood fibre from low risk sources, which are backed by reliable control systems.

The entire Pöls site is certified to both FSCTM and PEFCTM Chain-of-Custody standards.Typically a range of between 55 % and 75 % of pulp production annually will be PEFCTM cer-tified fibre. For kraft paper production, where we also buy some short fibre for optimal formation and printability, we use only FSCTM certified pulp. All pulps used fulfill minimum requirements of FSCTM and PEFCTM standards relating to the exclusion of controversial sources. This is important for supply chain risk assessment on timber legality. Our data provision extends to tree species (Spruce, Pine, Larch, and Eucalyptus) as well as countries of origin. Our first choice is however, always to use wood that is locally available.

This is how we do it – for pulp we source all energy from the lignin in the wood and we utilize the bark for additional fuel locally – most other mills need to burn the bark for internal energy use. What’s more, our excess heat and co-gener-ated electricity means we can supply renewable district heat for up to 15,000 and power for up to 35,000 households in the region.

We were awarded the Climate Protection Award 2014 for our project “Bioenergy Aichfeld”.

paper industrygeneral

In comparison to the paper industry standards, Starkraft paper boasts an exceedingly low carbon foot-print and high energy efficiency. The integration of pulp mill and paper machine not only guarantees the supply of raw materials, but also supports an energy efficient production. This results in a carbon footprint (according to CEPI guidelines), of 370 kg/t of paper, depending on the grade. This is extraordinary low by industry standards, where averages for paper making can exceed 800 kg/t.

Smallest CO2 footprint

Our exceptional energy profile means also extremely low NOx emissions. We achieve on average a figure of 1.42 kg/t in our pulps, which is well within local limits and the BAT guidelines of 1.1-2.0 kg/t.

There is a lot of water in Austria but the river that we source from, the river Pöls, is not a big river. Consequently, over many decades we have invested heavily in water utilisation and pollution control. Our specific effluent volume is 40.4 m³/t of pulp, compared to BAT guidelines of 25-50 m³/t. The cleaning of this water is done to the highest of standards. The achieved emission level for AOX (chlorinated organic substances) is 0.09 kg/t of pulp, which falls midway in the new BAT range of 0.0-0.2 kg/t. For COD (organic material in effluent) our performance is an outstanding 10.1 kg/t, right at the bottom of the BAT range of 7-20 kg/t.With community in mind, all communal effluents of the local households (some 12,000 people) have been connected to the mill’s treatment plant, providing a valuable local resource.

Hygiene and food contact system

Management SystemsHealth as a top priority

At Starkraft we can confirm that we have a hazard and risk analysis system available. Furthermore we are able to minimise and eliminate the risk of foreign bodies within our paper. We also have a preventative pest control programme in force, a product recall procedure and provide a hygiene and good manufacturing practice awareness to our staff.

We take our responsibilities very seriously. This is why we are con-stantly working on measures to maintain, promote and improve the physical, mental and social well-be-ing of our employees. In 2013 we introduced a workplace health promotion scheme and created an important basis for a sustainable and healthy lifestyle of our employ-ees. We believe it is this integration of robust systems, continual invest-ment and a passion for doing what is right, that has also resulted in ex-cellent local community relations. Our staff’s identification with the company allows us to enjoy a great acceptance.

The Starkraft logo de-picts a rhino with wings that symbolizes for us strength and flexibili-ty. Our “Flying Rhino” connects us to these an-imals and we feel it is a responsibility to protect and preserve them.

„We are very pleased to partner with our selected non-profit organizations in South Africa, and are deligh-ted with their enthusiasm, their motivation and their tireless, unpaid commitment to the rhinos. Through our long-term partnership we want to support their efforts to protect the endangered rhinos in South Africa.“

WERNER HARTMANN, Managing Director Starkraft

Rhinos are among the most endangered species in the world and heavily targeted by poachers because their horns make enormous money on the black market. The majority of the rhinos killed are in South Africa, where 75 percent of all African rhinos live. In South Africa, there is a large number of organizations working for the protection of rhinos. Starkraft has selected four that protect the rhinos from poachers or look after the injured.
