• Sustainability means: Meeting the needs of all and protecting our planet now and in the future so that we can all thrive.
• It’s therefore in the University’s and you, our staff’s interests to act sustainably.
• This two minute animation explains it simply.

• We need to understand the importance of sustainability, how we act to minimise or reverse our impacts, what we teach, research or how we apply it in our operations and wider activities
• Ask in our work and lives: How do we become part of the solution rather than part of the problem?
• What sort of future would you like to build – one that is sustainable, or one that is not?

• The University, its students and staff are proud
to be a leader in the sector for our
sustainability work. We’ve won many awards:
• By acting responsibly you can help us maintain
our leadership. It will help us win more
awards, save money, reduce our impacts and
risks and meet our values & comply with our
sustainability related policies.
• Our sustainability reputation has a high value
so we seek to protect it though the actions of
our staff and students.

Do something about it
• Most students (over 80%) think being
environmentally and socially (sustainably)
responsible is a core value to them
• Almost 80% want sustainability to be
taught to them in their programmes.
• Most students expect their university to
act sustainably (sources above from HEA-
NUS 2011-2015)
• To deliver a sustainable future requires
our students to understand and act
sustainably at home, at university and in
their careers.

Help meet their needs & expectations
• Your actions will help us in ways that maintain our leadership:– Reduce, reuse, recycle, save electricity, procure
sustainably, print less, use your own water bottles and drinks cups, eat less meat, cycle, walk, take public transport. If an academic integrate sustainability in your research and or teaching, otherwise see how you can undertake your role in a more sustainable manner.
– Learn about sustainability using these resources or request a training session from [email protected]
– Work or volunteer to improve our or the community’s sustainability outcomes
– Become or work with your departmental Sustainability Champion

Help reduce your environmental impacts
• Sustainability relates to every
subject and programme.
• It can help make sense of how
disciplines & other areas of work
connect to the wider world.
• It can be a motivator to help you
learn and undertake research be
creative and consider other
disciplines and working areas.
• The University is keen to help
students & staff understand and
apply sustainability.
• You can apply it within the
University through the ‘Living
Lab’ concept.
• You can learn about some of the
issues and areas that are
interesting, and inspiring here.
• Employers are seeking
‘sustainability literate’ students
& employees.
