suPREEME (sometimes called SUPREEME SUPREEME) is a 3 marap band from Atlanta, GA. The members are Tom Cruz a.k.a Dope Pope, King Self, and NegaArmada. Tom Cruz is the groups exclusive producer though all three members rap. Supreeme iperhaps the most versatile group in rap music. For the most part, they make hooky childish sonwith seemingly simple subject matter over beats that have been beamed in from another dimension. Mobb Deep, Three 6 Maa, Wu-tang Clan, The Hot Boys and Jamaican dancehall heavily inuence the musical styles of Supreeme. They have released a series of independentrecords and have recently nished recording their Warner Bros. debut LP Gold Medallion, duerelease spring 2009.

Supreeme formed in 2003 while attending high school in Atlanta, GA. All three members haveforeign parentage and have traveled extensively abroad-- which heavily inuenced their underground debut Church & State. In 2006, their national debut, Supremacy, solidied their b

playful tone over a diverse sonic landscape. 2007’s American Badass, saw Supreemeexperimenting with a lo-, hard sound inspired by gutter Atlanta music and gutter Jamaicandancehall. Silver Medallion, released online in fall of 2008, was a lyrical beat down and wasSupreeme’s rst step towards International God of Rhyme status.

Their sound varies with every project and arguably the most signifying marker of Supreeme is threfusal to do the cliche idea. They rap a lot about stealing girlfriends, doing ridiculous things wmoney (like elaborate landscaping, trips to Cape Verde, and Falconry), being reckless and hathe time of their lives. Still, if you become a Supreeme fan, expect a departure from anypreconceived notion you have even if its based on a previous Supreeme record. They arecommitted to being tight rst but secondly to surprising everyone including themselves.

Tom Cruz came to Atlanta at age 7. As a child he served as roto his father’s reggae band. At 12, he began making beats on computer program Fruityloops and has since mastered his crafthas a unique sampling style inuenced heavily by the RZA and D

Paul (of Three 6 Maa) and his non sample beats are reminiscenMannie Fresh and dancehall producer Don Corleone.

Lyrically, his rst favorite rappers were Southern pimps like Big Boi, Pimp C, and 8 Ball but later hgot into New York rappers like Cormega and Prodigy of Mobb Deep. He’d argue now though his biggest inuences are dancehall artist Vybz Kartel and Slick Rick. If you ask him, he rhymes lmix between Big Pun and Peter Jennings.

For clarication purposes, Tom Cruz produces every Supreeme song. If he didn’t do the beat, i

a Supreeme song.

King Self is the wild card, the maverick, the odd ball, the other one.Beyond the obvious supercialities that set him apart, he raps themost unlike anything you’ve ever heard. Born and raised in Atlanta,he initially approached rap with very Pastor Troy, Mystikal, and (little)

Lil Wayne methods. As he got older, he incorporated inuences likeBig Pun and E-40 into his style.

Then he learned how to drum which pushed his rhythmic awareness to new heights. He is probthe most poetic and least direct of the Supreeme rappers with Tom Cruz being his polar opposand comedic foil. Stylistically, he has no fear of sounding absurd but because his voice is so tigand his ow is so insane he never does.

According to Wikipedia, King Self is a person with independence of thought or action, a

non-conformist; or, in American use, a stray animal without an owner’s mark on it. King Self’smother is from England and his father is from South Carolina; so sometimes he looks like a rock from the 70s but he’s a DSGB for life.

Negashi Armada is the smart weird kid at your school that everyfrom every hood or subculture gets along with. Strange enoughrecord he is the rebrand who says outrageous things that his skiframe may not be able to back up. Does he care? No.

Negashi is probably the most conventional rapper of Supreeme. His number one favorite rappall time is Nasir Jones.

Growing up in the south though, he couldn’t just be content with being really descriptive and he has to come with some crazy ows and colorful language. So he denitely takes a lot fromartists like Big Boi (circa Aquemini-Stankonia) and Bun B. Live, Negashi is heavily inuenced by t

glam rock theatrics of the 70’s, the melodrama of shoegaze and the sheer insanity of Dutty Friddancehall parties.
