What is a Counsellor?
Masters and PhD professionals trained in the field of Counselling Psychology
Highly skilled in personal, academic, and career related areas
Liaison for other support services (on and off campus)

academic procedures, new bureaucracy, career guidance…)

weakness! Asking questions – Instructors, ISC’s, Counsellors, Doctors…
Make contact with a support person
Self advocate – it’s ok!
“Why meet with a counsellor?”
Difficulty being away from partner, children, family, friends…
Uncertainty about your choice of university program or future career
Issues with academic performance, ability to concentrate, and/or
relationships with others
Feelings of loneliness, helplessness or hopelessness,
or prolonged sadness or grieving
Persistent worry or panic attacks
Thoughts of suicide or wanting to harm yourself, or others
Road bumps…!

(grading, ‘N” versus ‘F’, course repeats,
GPA calculations etc.)

Academic Probation
Did not achieve the Minimum Academic Standard in a semester grade point average (GPA) was less than 1.50 or,
more than one "F", "N" or "U" on a semester record or transcript
Academic Probation can be thought of as a warning
What do you need to do? Make an appointment to see a counsellor (A107, or B111)
about your Academic Plan
Talk to your Student Coordinator in the IE Office (A107) about your Study Permit*

Academic Suspension When a student fails to achieve the Minimum Academic Standard
in a semester immediately following a semester in which the student was on Academic Probation.
Students who are suspended cannot study at Langara for 3 semesters (or one academic year).
What do you need to do? Make an appointment to see a counsellor (A107 or B111) to develop an
Academic Success Plan
Talk to your Student Coordinator in the IE Office about your Study Permit and your stay in Canada*

What does consent mean?
To give permission for something to happen.
