Welcome to SSAW 2014. I hope you find that this year’s program provides you with the opportunity to not only experience workshops to enhance your knowledge and skills for the workplace, but also workshops that you indicated are of special interest to you.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 201311:30 AM – 2:00 PM

Funny, relevant, engaging, and interactive, Ron Tite exceeds expectations each and every time he takes the stage. Named one of the “Top 10 Creative Canadians” by Marketing magazine, he addresses a variety of topics surrounding creativity, innovation, personal branding, social media, and corporate strategy.

Trained at the legendary Second City, Tite has been a comedian, speaker, host, and award-winning advertising writer and executive creative director. He has also written for a number of television series, penned a children’s book, and wrote, performed, and produced the play, The Canadian Baby Bonus.

He has created advertising campaigns for clients including Air France, Evian, Kraft, Intel, Microsoft, Volvo, and many others. His work has been recognized by The London International Advertising Awards, The New York Festivals of Advertising, The Crystals, The Extras, The Canadian Marketing Association, The Marketing Awards and others.

Currently, he is President of The Tite Group, a content marketing agency based in Toronto. His first book, Everyone’s An Artist (Or At Least They Should Be), will be published by HarperCollins in June, 2014.

The “Humber Clio Awards”, recognizing the inspiration, imagination and creativity of the college community in the production of a commercial, will be presented at this year’s luncheon. Through interactive technology (e.g., your cell phone) lunch

attendees will have the opportunity to vote for the winners in the following categories: • Most Imaginative Commercial • Most Inspiring Commercial • Best Use of Humour in a Commercial • Most Memorable Commercialand the prestigious: • “I Want to Work in Your Department” Award!

It’s not what you say; it’s how you say it. This workshop will give you a strategy for speaking effectively. Speaking to others is the number one fear in North America, yet we do it every day. By understanding how to say what you want to say, your confidence level will rise. Say what you really mean to anyone in your organization, regardless of his or her position.

This workshop is intended to develop your speaking skills to save you time from repeating

yourself. You will leave with a process that will allow you to speak comfortably and effectively and

be confident you delivered your message with influence.

The morale in your environment will increase as a direct result from effectively saying what you

mean to say.

Mind MaPPing Facilitator: Susan Lynne Time: 1 PM – 4 PM Location: Room B203

We seem to be overloaded with projects and tasks, with lack of time and clarity about big picture and end result. A Mind Map is a visual tool to capture and organize ideas. It can be created on paper, whiteboard or using software. Mind Mapping can help you to collect and prioritize tasks easily, save time and get a new perspective on key projects.

This fun, interactive workshop will help you to learn the techniques of Mind Mapping and apply

them to real business situations. You will see how this approach can make your projects and

tasks more appealing to your brain and reduce stress by connecting with the big picture.

We will explore the fundamentals of bread making and implement some Italian and Artisan bread making techniques. Baking professional looking and tasting bread at home is a very easy task when you know the right tips. You will WOW your guests for sure.

This practical component will be 100% hands on and the best part is that you can have a slice of

warm bread direct from the oven.

WHat’s MY Carbon FootPrint and HoW Can i redUCe it @ HUMber? Facilitators: Lindsay Walker & Spencer Wood – Facilities Management Time: 9:30 AM– 11:00 AM Location: Room L132

The term Carbon Footprint is used a lot these days… What does it actually mean? When thinking of sustainability, a footprint is a symbol for the total impact that something has, and carbon relates to the different greenhouse gases (GHGs) that contribute to global warming. A Carbon Footprint is an estimate of the impact of an activity, a product, a lifestyle, a company, or a whole country!

In this session you will learn more about Carbon Footprint, and how it relates to you. We will look

at what actions you can take to reduce your footprint in your work at Humber, as well is in your

lives outside of Humber. Find out how you can get more involved in this sustainability initiative!

Good writing slips silently by the eyes, captivating readers with its content and never drawing attention to its mysterious tricks and techniques. Not-so-good writing, on the other hand, is clumsy and loud, banging into walls and distracting readers with every clunky misstep.

Do you dream of being a graceful Word Ninja – but feel like your writing has its feet tied and a

blindfold around its eyes? Do you know there’s something wrong with “Dripping with cheese, the

student enjoyed a post-exam piece of pizza,” but you can’t quite tell what?

Join Humber senior writer Sara Chappel and learn ancient, mystical Word Ninja secrets that can

help make your work clear, concise and error-free.

Participants will learn:

• Why clear, consistent, error-free writing is especially important in a postsecondary environment

• What “style” means in a writing context, and why having a consistent style is important • Common style conventions used in publications at Humber, including an introduction to

Canadian Press style (and important exceptions to the rules)• How to deal with common grammar, usage and punctuation issues• Tips and tricks for editing your own work.

diY – triM & MoUldings Facilitator: Jarek Wawrow – School of Applied Technology, Carrier Drive Time: 9 AM – 12 noon Location: Room CAR128, Carrier Drive

Have you ever had a yearning to replace the trim on your windows, or accent your home with wood mouldings? Here’s your chance to learn about different types of trim and mouldings, and where their applications are useful and appealing. Participants will receive instruction on the safe operation of a mitre saw and pneumatic nailer. Each participant will have the hands-on opportunity to apply the wood trim on a window opening in class.

Learn how to employ critical thinking techniques that help challenge assumptions and influence others to make well-rounded, better informed decisions. Critical thinking is about exercising sound judgment. Critical thinkers are skilled at quickly evaluating arguments and articulating alternative opinions. This workshop will provide an opportunity for you to enhance critical thinking skills, improve methods of reasoning, develop stronger arguments, problem-solve more effectively and communicate convincingly.

go green WitH Herbs Facilitator: Valeria Wuschnakowski – School of Applied Technology Time: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM Location: Greenhouse, North Campus

Get inspired to create an herb garden in our Humber Greenhouse! During this very interactive session participants will have the opportunity to do their own container planting and at the end of the session participants will get to take their creation home.

FrUits & Veggies in tHe bar Facilitator: Antonio Folino – School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism Time: 1 PM – 4 PM Location: Room H332

Back by popular demand! This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the wonderful world of fruits and vegetables used in the bar. Common fruits will be incorporated with the not so common to produce non-alcoholic “mocktails” that can be served when entertaining guests. Recipes and preparation tips will be given, so that you can enjoy these beverages with your children, or when entertaining guests.

More often than not, we feel overwhelmed with too much to do, deadlines to meet and it all becomes very stressful. This seminar, presented by Humber’s Counselling and Health Centre staff, will explore what stress is, its physiological and psychological impact, and its role in mental illness; we will also look more specifically at workplace stress. Tools for self-care, stress management, and supporting others will be discussed and demonstrated. A brief overview of Mental Health First Aid will be provided at the end of the session.

CPr & aed training (leVel C) Facilitator: Ashley Kelly – BERRN Consulting Ltd. Time: 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM Location: Room B204

This 4-hour CPR/AED course will be provided by a Red Cross First Aid/CPR instructor and is intended to provide the skills and confidence needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking either in the workplace or at home. The course will also familiarize employees with the AEDs that have recently been installed on campus and how to use them. Some of the topics covered are:

• Choking – Adult and child

• Assisting with Medications

• Angina and Heart Attack

• Stroke

• CPR – Adult and child

• Deadly Bleeding

Laughter really is the best medicine! Studies have shown that incorporating exercise, eating right and laughing a few times every day can ward off heart disease. Laughter yoga improves blood circulation, decreases stress and provides a great cardio workout.

“It is a perfect way to laugh and get exercise at the same time. It approaches laughter as

a body exercise so it is easy to laugh even if you are depressed or in a bad mood. I

highlighted Laughter Yoga on my TV program. I have tried it and it works.” Oprah Winfrey

It’s fun and easy – no postures or special equipment or clothing required – participants are

experts from the first session. If you need or want a good laugh come to this session to reap

these benefits:

Please join us in “Celebrating Inspiration” at the 26th annual Support Staff Appreciation

Luncheon. The “Humber Clio Awards”, recognizing the inspiration, imagination and creativity of the

college community in the production of a commercial, will be presented at this year’s luncheon.

Through interactive technology (e.g., your cell phone) lunch attendees will have the opportunity to

vote for the winners in the following categories:

• Most Inspiring Commercial

• Best Use of Humour in a Commercial

• Most Memorable Commercial

• And the prestigious, “I Want to Work in Your Department” Award!

Ron Tite, our keynote and MC for this event, will present the awards. You don’t want to miss this

one! As in the past, we encourage you to get creative and wear costumes that reflect the SSAW

theme. This year WE ARE CELEBRATING INSPIRATION and you might consider dressing up to

showcase your school or department (i.e., Health Sciences might want to come as nurses, lab

technicians, funeral directors…you get the idea!) Collaborate with your team and come up with

something innovative and fun to help us celebrate this unique event!

Hand drumming has been around for hundreds of years, and is very easy to learn and extremely exhilarating for your mind, body and soul! Register to attend this invigorating, inspiring and communicative learning session, as Jamie will connect you to the devotion of drumming, culture and people. You will learn the foundations of West African rhythms and create a mélange of sound and percussion that will resonate with you for the rest of the day. A wonderful way to end SSAW! Drums will be provided.
