President’s Message

Welcome to Support Staff Appreciation Week 2017. The theme for this year is “WE ARE

SSAW Celebrating 50 Golden Years.” This year marks SSAW’s 29th anniversary, celebratingthe contributions you make to the college with a week of professional developmentopportunities. We are also proud to be celebrating Humber’s amazing story.

The past year, as the last few years, has involved many changes to our community. Whetheryou work directly or indirectly with our students, it is through your efforts and dedicationthat we have been able to provide the exceptional support that helps us realize our vision,mission and values.

For over 15 years, Slap Happy has been performing award-winning improvised comedy across North America and Europe. During that time they've won three Canadian Comedy Awards as best improv troupe, and individually have taken home several more as writers, directors and performers.

A specific application of the Life Styles Inventory, LSI Conflict was developed by Human Synergistics to assist individualsin identifying and understanding how their thinking patterns, or “styles”, and coping behaviours affect how they dealwith conflict situations.

Join us in this practical 1 hour session plus individual mini assessments, as we work to improve your comfort by learning about the proper way to set up an office workstation. Topics covered will include: Proper working height Monitor set-up Chair set-up Accessories (i.e. headset, document stand) Keyboard/mouse set-up

Session attendees will have an opportunity to sign up for a one-on-one assessment of their office workstation. In each 20 minute time slot, an ergonomist will discuss your concerns, ensure your existing equipment is set up correctly and recommend measures that ensure your desk is fit to you.

Last year the School of Health Sciences was excited to share our brand new labs that opened Fall of 2015. This year we will be providing a tour of the Funeral Service Labs (restorative lab, embalming area, as well as a Funeral Planning Room) and due to popular demand, we will also be including the Bioscience area and the cadaver lab.

There is more exciting news! We recently opened a brand new state-of-the-art Pharmacy Laboratory that we will also include in the tour. The Pharmacy Technician labs include a hospital lab, community pharmacy lab and a sterile compound preparation lab. Finally, we just opened our brand new child development centre and will proudly show of this exciting new space in the tour. Come join us, we’re happy to show you around.

Ditch the routine and enjoy the party! Zumba is a cardio-based workout that combines Latin and other International music to create an interval training class that is both fun and easy to do!

Breath and mind are intrinsically connected. By teaching the participants simple and different techniques of breath, theseparticipants will find a way to handle their mind, which is totally in their own hands, with a tool, as simple as their ownbreath.

The rest in meditation is deeper than the deepest sleep that one can ever have. When the mind becomes free fromagitation, is calm and serene and at peace, meditation happens. The benefits of meditation are manifold. It is an essentialpractice for mental hygiene. A calm mind, good concentration, clarity of perception, improvement in communication,blossoming of skills and talents, an unshakeable inner strength, healing, the ability to connect to an inner source ofenergy, relaxation, rejuvenation, and good luck are all natural results of meditating regularly.

In the past, the definition of family seemed to fit into a neat little box; there was mom, dad, the kids, and the extendedfamily. This traditional definition is no longer sufficient to describe this social institution, as the definition of a family issignificantly broader today than it has been historically. This session explores today’s family life, which can often seemcomplicated and challenged by circumstances such as divorce, a feeling of lack of time, poor communication, andcompetition from electronic gadgets. Participants will have the opportunity to see that, despite these issues, it is possibleto build a great family life.

The session answers the most common questions we hear from members as they prepare for retirement. It gives you thetools to feel prepared for retirement and build confidence about your retirement security.

Representatives from the Plan deliver an engaging session on a range of topics relating to retirement. You’ll learn aboutthe Plan’s flexible retirement date options, valuable survivor benefits, and inflation protection. The session uses real-world examples and retirement planning tips to help ensure a smooth transition to retirement.

Come to this workshop to learn how to hem your own “slacks”, skirt or dress – so they will last for years to come! Bring your own to this session, or we will provide the clothing for you.

Creating your own art that sparks joy and motivation is really simple! You will create your own lettering inspiration piecefor office or home decor with everyday items. We'll start off by creating a watercolour background, followed by letteringon your favourite quote, motivational saying, or creative pun! We'll finish off the piece by adding small details such asdots, stars or border. The limit to your creativity in this workshop is endless! Different water colour techniquesand lettering styles will also be showcased. In the end you will have a finished piece, that is ready to hang!

Come to this workshop and learn about how ALS supports both students and faculty, what happens in a case consultation by participating in mock scenarios and keep apprised of recent changes from the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and what is means for you.

Learn to Solve a Rubik’s CubeTime: 10:00 am - 12:00 noonLocation: Room B211, North CampusFacilitator: Cameron Redsell-Montgomery, School of Liberal Arts & Sciences

This workshop will be a groovy look at solving and understanding a rubik’s cube. Ernö Rubik created the cube not as apuzzle, but as a cool way to show the movements of a structure without it falling apart. Our far out algorithm to solvingthe Rubik’s cube in 7 steps will lead to the man’s downfall. We will also have normal and more complex cubes andshapes to try for anyone willing to try. Bring your grooviest Rubik’s Cube!

Participants will solve a Rubik's cube, but also understand the logic behind it and see how it applies to algorithms andmathematics.

Human Synergistics Stress Processing Report (SPR) is a personal, confidential self-assessment tool that focuses on thelong-established relationship of an individual’s thinking patterns, health and performance effectiveness. This presentation will reflect on student feedback to better understand how we can serve Humber’s diverse population.Focusing specifically on feedback from LGBTQ+ students, we will identify some of the common issues that our studentsare facing during their time at Humber. We will share foundational ideas and approaches that can be applied to a varietyof departments.

We will also have some fun - bring a white cotton t-shirt with you to tie-dye in this workshop!
