Refrigerant Guide
superradiatorcoils.com
There are lots of HVAC refrigerants today. And it can be difficult to keep track of them all. New refrigerants are constantly being developed, while some older refrigerants are being discontinued. On top of that, a growing number of refrigerants are blends—combining multiple refrigerants to take advantage of specific properties.
We created this guide to be a useful snapshot of today’s most common and popular refrigerants. In it you’ll find general information, notable properties and typical applications—as well as critical temperature, critical pressure, Global Warming Potential (GWP), Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and more. We hope it’s a handy tool that helps you find information quickly, so you can be more efficient at your job.

R-717 / Ammonia
Boiling Temperature: -28°F, -33°CAmmonia is an efficient refrigerant and, as a natural refrigerant, it contributes to neither global warming nor ozone depletion. It’s typically used for industrial and military applications. Ammonia is highly toxic, and careful consideration ought to be given to both the design of the system and its application.

R-22 / chlorodifluoromethane
OverviewR-22 is one of the most popular refrigerants ever produced, in part because of its non-irritating, non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive properties. Classified as part of the methane series of refriger-ants, it was - and still is - used across the entire range of HVAC-R applications: high-temp, medium-temp, and low-temp. But, due to environmental concerns, various phaseout efforts have occured since the 1980s, and its production, import, and use was completely banned on Jan. 1, 2020.

R-32 / difluoromethane
R-32 is classified as part of the methane series of refrigerants. It's a very popular refrigerant despite being classified by ASHRAE as mildly flammable. It’s regularly used in residential and commercial HVAC systems throughout Asia, often used as a substitute for R-410A. A new refrigerant, R-32 has received significant attention due to its combination of performance and relatively low environmental impact.

R-744 / carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide has become a popular refrigerant option in Europe and Canada over the last 15 years or so, especially for supermarkets and food storage warehouses. Usage is increasing in America as well in the last few years. These applications use CO₂ under high pressure, which moves between subcritical and supercritical stages, known as transcritical CO₂.

Boiling Temperature: 11°F, -11.6°CR-600A, also known as isobutane, is a colorless and odorless hydrocarbon refrigerant, the use of which became popular in the 1990s. It has negligible environmental impact, and is on the lower end of the toxicity spectrum, however, it can pose an explosive/flammability risk, and is classified under ASHRAE safety group A3, their highest designation for flammability. R-600A’s performance is similar to that of both R-12 and R-22, and can serve as replacement for both.

R-1234yf / 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene
R-1234yf is an unsaturated organic compound that is classified as a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO). It’s used frequently in vehicle air conditioning systems, often in place of R-134A, the GWP of which is just over 1400, whereas R-1234yf has a GWP of less than 1. While it’s classified by ASHRAE as somewhat flammable, very specific conditions are required for the substance to actually ignite. It’s also generally considered to be non-toxic, although there are concerns about the levels of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), created as R-1234yf breaks down, the amount of which is believed to be as much as 5 times greater than that produced by R-134A’s breakdown.

R-410A
Boiling Temperature: -55.3°F, -48.5°C Consisting of a combination of equal parts R-32 and R-125, R-410A is very popular for HVAC applications like condensers. R-410A is very popular for residential and commercial air conditioning in several markets, including The United States, Europe, and parts of Asia. Trepidation regarding its high operating pressure in warmer ambient temperatures could explain why R-410A isn’t as prevalent in places like the Middle East or tropical parts of the world.
