“COME, FOLLOW ME.” - MT. 4:19 | “GO, MAKE DISCIPLES.” - MT. 28:19
Our Vision for Evangelization & Discipleship
As Catholics, Jesus calls us to be disciples and to make disciples. Making disciples is
called evangelization. Evangelization is at the heart of all our ministries at Good Shepherd
because evangelization is at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus Christ.
Moving forward as a parish community, let’s reflect together on the five characteristics of
being a disciple: welcome, encounter, grow, serve, and share. What is the purpose?
We are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a greater urgency in living out
our Catholic calling of evangelization. Learn more: www.gscc.net

Our Mission:
Be Disciples. Make Disciples.
In welcoming all, we form disciples
who know, love, and serve
God and neighbor.
Who is a disciple?
A disciple welcomes God's people,
encounters Jesus Christ, grows in
Jesus Christ, serves God's people,
and shares the Gospel.

Pastor’s Corner THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
Divine Son Revealed, Ends the Christmas Season and Begins Short Ordinary Time
January 13
“Today the Christmas season draws to a close as we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. We extend our celebration of Epiphany by focusing on the manifestation of Christ to the world. Today we hear God’s voice over the waters of the Jordan: ‘You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.’ As Christians, we believe that God’s words are meant for all who are baptized in Christ. We are God’s beloved sons and daughters in whom God is well pleased. Today’s feast also begins the first week in the Ordinary Time.”
Father Richard PASTOR’S VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Community of Good Shepherd is intentional about evangelizing and making disciples in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, especially by seeking out the lost in need of reconciliation and conversion of heart to God, the Church, to oneself and others, so that all may experience the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus.
Mass Readings & Intentions: Jan. 14 - 20
Vocations Corner
Marc | Deacon Aspirant, Diocese of Fort Worth Parishioner of Good Shepherd!
“Some people receive a distinct calling to serve in a greater capacity, like an “ah-ha” moment. For me, it was quite different. I received a gradual, increasing appreciation for the guidance I have received from the Holy Spirit throughout my life.”
Permanent Deacons are men who are ordained to serve at the altar alongside the priests. They can preach, baptize, preside at weddings, funerals, and Adoration events. They are both married and single, and often still work in their career fields. Formation to become a Permanent Deacon lasts at least 5 years, with the 1
st year called “Aspirancy.”
Marc is one of a handful of Good Shepherd parishioners who have decided to pursue becoming Permanent Deacons. Recently, he made a career change to become the Director of Parish Relations for Catholic Charities in Fort Worth. His wife, Maryellen, is a local Family and Marriage Therapist, with two daughters, Kim and Theresa. Both Marc and Maryellen are highly involved with CRHP, Men’s R&D, Eucharistic Ministry, and other ministries.
“The decision to become a Deacon is not made alone. Aspirants must have the approval of their spouses and children if they are married.”
Marc explains that the Diaconate program has opened his eyes to new experiences. “One of the most important things I have learned is that a Deacon isn’t just what a Deacon does, but rather who a Deacon is.” He suggests to men considering becoming Permanent Deacons to look into the numerous Catholic resources and touch base with a Priest or Deacon to learn more about the vocation.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus – history, life, identity, ministries, formation, etc. There will also be time for

Join Us This Sunday, Jan. 13!
We are delighted to welcome Guillermo to Good Shepherd! Guillermo is a 3rd Year Deacon Candidate, an Acolyte, and will be joining us the next year and a half of his Deacon Formation with serving at the altar, Baptism/Marriage preparation, and outreach.
“I was born in Juarez, Chihuahua Mexico, was raised in El Paso, TX (where I went to Middle and High School), and moved to Los Angeles (living there for almost four years and completing my basics at LA City College). I went back to Juarez, as I was offered a sports scholarship playing basketball at the University of Juarez, where I graduated from Law School as an attorney at law and went to graduate school for a year, specializing in Labor Law. I
then completed a Masters Degree in Customs Law and International Trade. I left all that behind, came back to El Paso, and now have been living in Grapevine for 20 years. I’m in the Diaconate Program on my third year of candidacy and completing my pastoral ministry at Good Shepherd.
Presently, I’m the Hispanic Ministry Coordinator at St. Michael’s, responsible for Baptism, Marriage, and Quinceañera prep classes, adult formation, and Bible studies in Spanish. I coordinate any ministries or groups that involve the Hispanic community, such as Holy Rosary Group. I’m also responsible for the coordination of parish-wide events (such as Our lady of Guadalupe Celebration festivities and the posadas) and for the parish website in Spanish. Additionally, I’m the official translator to Spanish.
My wife Patty and I will be celebrating 38 years married in January 2019. We have four children (Jeannette, Guillermo Jr., Eileen, and Christian) and we have six grandchildren (five girls and one boy). We love to serve in our parish and are involved in several ministries including Marriage Sponsor Couples, Stewardship Committee, Pastoral Advisory Council, etc.”
We welcome Guillermo and extend our prayers and support to him and his wife!

For information and to apply, please visit www.gscc.net/SERF. You may also contact Kathy Guarino, Coordinator of Outreach Ministries at [email protected] or 817-421-1387.

Ending Domestic Violence
Did you know that 1 in 3 women will be abused in her lifetime? This statistic includes women who suffer from physical, emotional and psychological abuse, and that means that we all know someone who is being abused, which is a sad reality. For this reason, the Good Shepherd Mission-Outreach Council is partnering with SafeHaven of Tarrant County. SafeHaven is focused on ending domestic violence in our community through safety, support, prevention, and social change. Its vision is to be a center of excellence in creating and implementing services that bring about positive, measurable change in the epidemic of intimate partner violence. SafeHaven is always looking for small groups, such as GSCC ministries and SCCs, to assist SH with its mission.
Feb. 4 - 9, 2019 | Adult Mission | El Paso-Mexico Border WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR A FEW MORE MISSIONERS TO JOIN OUR TEAM! Good Shepherd’s Mission Ministries invites you to a Border Awareness Experience. We will hear of the efforts of our local Catholic diocese, of legal aid agencies, human rights groups, federal judges, and the U.S. Border Patrol to treat the immigrants among us humanely, with the dignity they inherently deserve as human beings, created in the likeness of God. To learn about the trip logistics, including who can go, where we will stay, and cost, contact Mission Coordinator Tere Martin at [email protected].

Feed Our Friars
In addition to the cold weather outside, many people experience winters in their personal lives. A recent loss through death, divorce, or relocation may leave them feeling lonely. A hospitalization, a
cancer diagnosis, or ongoing medical problems may leave them feeling isolated. The loss of a job, the fear of layoffs, or a financial setback can devastate one’s self-esteem. Family and personal struggles may leave them with nowhere to turn for support. If you are going through a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can bring God’s warm love back into your life. They provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will meet with you privately on a weekly basis to listen, to support and encourage you, to pray with and for you, and to walk with you for the duration of your crisis. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS, Sean G
Tell me about your ministry and what your ministry does. “The Knights of Columbus is a world-wide Catholic fraternal order which provides volunteer services within the local community. This takes various forms such as food-drives, blood-drives, and coat-drives. The Knights also provide handyman services, traffic-direction at Masses, and the staffing of events such as ‘Trick or Treat,’ Easter-egg hunts, and the serving of breakfasts after Mass. It is therefore a very active organization within our church and parish.”
Why did you join this ministry? “I joined the Knights, shortly after moving to Colleyville, to become an active part of this Catholic community. It has been a great experience for me as I have met so many members of the parish, and I have been able to serve their needs.”
How have you grown in Christ through your ministry? “I have grown through the strong friendships that I have built within this group, and with fellow parishioners whom I may not have met otherwise. Such comradery encouraged me into other church ministries such as my becoming a Tribunal Advocate to the Fort Worth Diocese for this parish.”
How have you served others through your ministry? “We are continuously serving our community through the volunteer works that I have mentioned above. However, the benefits of our friendship, the satisfaction of helping people and, of course, an extra doughnut or two on the weekend make it all very worthwhile!”
We are seeking men who are interested in serving their parish and community. Monthly Business Mtgs: 1st Mon. | 7:15pm | Upper Rm

Prayer Shawl Ministry
If you like to knit or crochet and are looking for a way to answer God’s call to serve, then please consider becoming a member of Good Shepherd’s Prayer Shawl Ministry. This ministry is a wonderful way to demonstrate God’s
love, comfort, and mercy to people experiencing difficult times. Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry typically meet the 1
st Wednesday of each month at 9:30am in
Room 5 to knit and/or crochet as a group and pray over the shawls and lap blankets. If you prefer to knit or crochet prayer shawls and lap blankets on your own and then give them to our Prayer Shawl Ministry to pray over, simply bring your creations to the Parish Office, where you can complete a donation card. Donations of regular worsted yarn are always appreciated! For more information and to donate yarn, please contact Ann, Lead Minister for the GSCC Prayer Shawl Ministry, at [email protected].

Upcoming CRHP Retreats for Men & Women
What is it like to attend a CRHP retreat? Testimonies from the Men’s Retreat:
“The CRHP weekend was exactly what I needed to help me get back on my faith path. It was a chance to renew my connection with Christ.” - Kyle K “I attended the CRHP retreat to increase my faith. I ended up finding 30 new friends all struggling to do the same.” - Don W “During the CRHP retreat, I found out that I was not alone facing the challenges that I thought were uniquely mine.” - Victor D “God answered my prayer. When I teetered on going to CRHP or not, He put His favorite advocate in my path one morning. I am so glad I listened and obeyed! The experience confirmed my desire to be the spiritual leader He wants me to be at home, at work, and in the community. Deep down I was ready, and He knew it!” - Bob P
Christ Renews His Parish is a spiritual renewal weekend designed to help individuals grow in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and with others in their faith community. It is an excellent opportunity for Catholics to renew their understanding of the basic beliefs and traditions of their faith. It is a time to relax, pray, think about our priorities, and refresh ourselves spiritually. More importantly, it allows you the opportunity to examine, rediscover, and intensify your personal relationship with Christ.
This is a two-day retreat unlike any you have previously attended. Parishioners share with one another the ways they have found meaning, hope, peace, and love in their lives. They even share laughs along the way. The experience is personal, inspirational, and fulfilling. Many participants feel that the weekend experience has been among the most powerful and positive of their lives. The atmosphere is casual and you will begin friendships that will last a lifetime. Many of your fellow parishioners, who have previously attended, will be happy to share their experience.

Opening the Word: Baptism of the Lord
6 minute video reflection On this first Sunday of Ordinary Time, we recall the Baptism of the Lord. But, in addition to remembering this historical event, we also are asked to call to mind our own baptism. Why? Because our baptism isn’t just an event from the past, but a present reality that impacts every aspect of our lives.

On Saturday, Dec. 22, at the 5:00pm Mass, Good Shepherd Catholic Community joyfully welcomed RCIA Candidates, Christopher “Todd” and Erica into the Catholic Church. Their son, Nathan, (front) was baptized at this same Mass.
Todd and Erica had already received the Sacrament of Baptism in another faith tradition, so they received the Sacrament of Confirmation followed by their first Holy Communion, thus completing the cycle of the Sacraments of Initiation (that is Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist).
They both have journeyed through the RCIA process for many months with prayer, study, and growth. They have come to love the Church, the Bride of Christ, and have entrusted their salvation into the gentle and loving guidance of the Catholic Church. This is a profound act of faith. We express our heartiest welcome to Todd and Erica as well as to their son, Nathan.
The RCIA folks who have walked with Todd and Erica have been privileged to share their journey into the Church and, for this, we are grateful. To Christ be the glory now and forever.

Jesus taught, “The Kingdom of God is at hand!” (mentioned over 120 times in the Gospel) He focused on the vulnerable and outcasts, with whom He walked, talked, taught, comforted, healed, and fed – with compassion and mercy.
