Our Vision for Evangelization & Discipleship

As Catholics, Jesus calls us to be disciples and to make disciples. Making disciples is

called evangelization. Evangelization is at the heart of all our ministries at Good Shepherd

because evangelization is at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus Christ.

Moving forward as a parish community, let’s reflect together on the five characteristics of

being a disciple: welcome, encounter, grow, serve, and share. What is the purpose?

We are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a greater urgency in living out

our Catholic calling of evangelization. Learn more: www.gscc.net/disciples

Pastor’s Corner SUNDAY REFLECTION: THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus’ way of service, even if it requires giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

PASTOR’S VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Community of Good Shepherd is intentional about evangelizing and making disciples in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, especially by seeking out the lost in need of reconciliation and conversion of heart to God, the Church, to oneself and others, so that all may experience the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus.

Ministry Spotlights

Donna Deyo, Liturgical Art & Environment Ministry

How does your ministry serve? “Liturgical Art and Environment is a ministry that provides seasonal decor that reflects the Liturgical seasons and celebrations throughout the year. It offers a visual expression of the Word of God, creating a setting rich in symbolism. It also supports a fresh flower donation program that gives our parishioners an opportunity to honor or memorialize the special people and events in their lives. Great care is taken to prepare a beautiful and holy space of noble simplicity and elegance. A beautiful church honors God's Glory as well as the Sacraments offered at every Mass and celebration. The sensory elements provide a setting for the spiritual experience of prayer and adoration, and help us reflect more profoundly on the liturgy, e.g. expectation and preparation during Advent; joy in Christmas; repentance during Lent; new life in Easter.”

How have you grown in Christ through your ministry? “I have grown in my faith in unexpected ways through serving in this ministry. I am more attuned to the Liturgical symbolism, colors, and seasonal passages, but I am also very humbled by the experience of preparing our worship space to reflect God's Word and our Blessed Sacraments. It has become a spiritual journey for me. Before I begin working, I ask God to use my hands, my feet, and my vision for His glory. For me, the work becomes prayer in action. The beautiful is related to the Holy. This is truly a holy experience for me.”

Rob Rudloff, Audio/Visual Ministry

Why did you join this ministry? “I’ve worked or volunteered with churches for over 16 years in serving their AV needs. It’s how I learned almost everything I know about the industry. I can’t imagine a world where I’m not helping a parish with AV. When I moved to Dallas about three years ago, I found a need in our parish’s ministry and immediately stepped in to volunteer. I volunteered for maybe two or three weeks before I was asked to lead this ministry, a role I excitedly accepted. So that’s why I joined. Why I stayed: AV in any parish or venue is an evolving process. If done right, the work never really ends. Just as our parish and the greater Church are constantly on the move, so is AV ministry.”

How have you welcomed others through your ministry? “The question of ‘how have you welcomed others’ is an interesting one for AV. Really everything we do is contributing to a welcoming environment. If sound is working correctly and slides are showing up at the correct moments, then it leaves room for parishioners to focus on the liturgy and all that it entails. If we do our jobs correctly, we should go completely unnoticed. Even with that said, I should also say that I am extremely proud of my team and how they selflessly serve every week. I’m humbled by watching this team work for the benefit of our parishioners and an environment where they should absolutely go unnoticed. It’s clear that the members of this team love Christ, love His Church, and love serving in the unique capacity of AV production.”

Advent Reconciliation Service

The Vigil Project is a community of musical artists that was formed in January 2016. Featuring a collective of seasoned singer/songwriters and worship leaders (Andrea Thomas, John Finch, Shawn Williams, and Greg&Lizzy), TVP exists to invite the Church to a fresh encounter with God and to deep prayer through the experience of beautiful music. In less than two years, they’ve quickly garnered international acclaim through the release of two music video series’ (“Lent and Easter” and “Advent and Christmas”) that have helped set a new standard globally for quality in the Catholic music industry. TVP maintains a seasonal touring schedule between producing new music/film projects and finding creative ways to invite and unite the universal Church in prayer. Good Shepherd Music Ministry will present Bradley Ellingboe’s REQUIEM on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 7pm in the Church. The concert will include 75+ singers, a soloist, and a chamber orchestra.

Ellingboe’s REQUIEM was composed in 2002 and since then has been performed all over the world. This composition is a large choral work that combines the Latin requiem texts with famous English Christian texts such as The Lord’s Prayer, Death Be Not Proud by John Donne (1572-1631), Psalm 22, and an Evensong by George Herbert (1593-1633).

A REQUIEM is a musical composition of the components of the Roman Catholic Mass for the repose of the souls of the dead. A special love offering will be collected during the concert to support future programs presented by Good Shepherd Music Ministry.

On Sunday, October 21 at the 4:00pm Mass, Good Shepherd Catholic Community joyfully welcomed Chris C and Jim E into the Catholic Church.

Following their Baptism, they received the Sacrament of Confirmation followed by their first Holy Communion, thus completing the cycle of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist).

Chris and Jim have journeyed through the RCIA process for many months with prayer, study, and growth. They have come to love the Church, the Bride of Christ, and have entrusted their salvation into the gentle and loving guidance of the Catholic Church. This is a profound act of faith. We express our heartiest welcome to Chris and Jim.

The RCIA folks who have walked with Chris and Jim have been privileged to share their journey into the Church and for this, we are grateful. To Christ be the glory now and forever.

CATHOLIC INQUIRY Monday Evenings | 7:00pm | Rooms 2 & 3 RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the process whereby those who are not Catholic can explore the teachings of the Catholic faith. Natural Family Planning

Want to postpone pregnancy? Having difficulty conceiving? Trying to stay in line with Catholic teaching? Natural Family Planning (or NFP) is a natural and effective form of family planning. Through use of the Billings Ovulation Method, couples are able to track the woman’s natural and unique signs of fertility and infertility each day in order to postpone or to help achieve pregnancy. It should not be confused with the “rhythm method” as it can be used by women in all stages of life and is scientifically proven to be 99.5% effective when properly used. It is 100% natural and in line with Church teaching.

Prison Ministry Pen Pals Needed

If you’re looking for an impactful way to answer God’s call to live the Gospel, then please consider becoming a Pen Pal to a prison inmate through Good Shepherd’s Prison Ministry. A group of GSCC parishioners (and prayer warriors) have been writing to inmates, and it has been an outstanding way for them to serve and lift up prison inmates.

Parishioners use aliases and Good Shepherd’s mailing address to maintain anonymity. They also prepare correspondence at times and places when it is most convenient for them.

“Simply writing a note or sending a card or a scripture verse once a month, or even writing a brief reflection to recent homily you enjoyed, makes such a positive difference in the life of an inmate,”

Here’s what a few inmates have told us about our Pen Pal Program:

“Thank you for your letters. They are light in darkness. I share them with others and I just want you to know they are so welcome and I thank you so much for writing me. May God bless you all, you are such a giant in my mind to have so much with family and still have time to write us.”

“I can't explain in words how much your encouragement has helped me.”

“How nice it is to hear your name called during the mail call time, and how much it means to me.”
