Zillertal Alps Nature Park Dear Nature Park Enthusiast,

Our Nature Park is a high alpine conservation area in the truest sense of the words. It extends from the traditional mountaineering village of Ginzling to the Hochfeiler Peak at 3,509 m. Five different sub-valleys, narrow gorges, glaciated summits, innate and cultivated landscapes as well as an extraordinary biodiversity are the defining characteristics of the „Nature Park of the Year 2015“.

We invite you to discover the Nature Park together with our guides and find out more about the region. There is something to suit everyone – with hikes to the Berlin Hut, herbal walks and an ascent to Mount Ahorn’s peak with Peter Habeler.

We highly recommend a visit to the Nature Park House, as well as staying with one of our partner companies who work in close collaboration with the Nature Park. Guests of our part-ner companies can participate in all our Nature Park hikes and visit the exhibition at the Nature Park House for free.

The Nature Park is waiting to be discovered by you!

The Nature Park Team, Manager Willi Seifert, Katharina Weiskopf, Karin Bauer

Events 2015 Lecture: „The zillertal alps - lighting moods“ - Friday 30 July Horst Ender regularly visits the mountains of Zillertal with his camera – sometimes the Tux Alps, others the Kitzbühel Alps on the opposite side, or the Alpine Main Ridge in the Zillertal Alps Nature Park. It is the precious light of day he is looking for, which alters perceptibly in changing weather and that he captures with ease on camera. Gudrun Steger traces the history of the people who have found light in these harsh, lonely and beautiful mountains over thousands of years.Lecture by Horst Ender & Gudrun Steger: Friday 10. July 2015, 20.00 hrs at the Mehrzweckgebäude in Ginzling, free admission.

Ice Myth Multi Vision Show - Thursday 30 July Photographer Bernhard Berger presents striking images from the glacier region, with unique shots from the interior of these ice giants. Enthralling images, accompanied by inspiring music and an account of how these pictures came to be – you will see glaciers from a very different perspective after this presentation.Multi Vision show by Bernhard Berger: Thursday 30. July, 20.30 hrs in the Tux-Center in Lanersbach, free admission.

Nature Park Festival & Nature Park Hike in Ginzling - Saturday 22 August Nature Park Festival for visitors of all ages in Ginzling, accompanied by a communal hike from the Nature Park House into Floitengrund, with info stations on natural history and food stalls. Along the walk there are stations manned by our Nature Park guides, as well as a Nature park crafts in Ginzling at the Na-ture Park Festival. We are going to build a giant wild bee hotel together. Visitors can also look forward to a climbing tower and the „Saubär“ bear.

Nature Park Rangers: The nature pros are out and about for you! Discover the special characteristics of the region with the Rangers

What do Rangers actually do?The Rangers are out and about in the Nature Park twice a week in summer. Whilst underway, they inform visitors about the nature reserve and its special features: geology, glaciers, animals, plants, alpine farm life and lots more. The Rangers, however, have even more to offer. Nature Park visitors can observe and experience nature right up close at their various stations. Using binoculars and a telescope, the Rangers will help you identify otherwise invisible details both near and far: The World of Ice Giants, wild animals that live in high alpine landscapes, as well as the beauty of the alpine flora. They are, of course, more than happy to share their extensive knowledge and give advice on walks and excursions, how to behave correctly in the wild and support volunteering projects.

Page 21: Summer Programme 2015 EN

When and where are the Rangers underway?

Andrea

MariaHerbert

Hermann

Our Ranger TeamThe Nature Park has four Rangers - Andrea, Maria, Herbert and Hermann. They are specially trained and advocates of high quality and competent visitor information.

Clean MountainsThe Rangers pay great attention to keeping the trails clean and tidy and remove any debris they may find. However, this shouldn’t be happening in the first place - remember: waste has a long life, so take your rubbish home with you!

The Rangers are out and about along the Nature Park hiking trails twice weekly from 16th June to 05th September. If you know where they are working you are bound to meet up with them. You can find out where they are on the event overview from page 9, along with lots more infor-mation from the Online Ranger Diary under: blog.naturpark-zillertal.atThrilling encounters, animated conversations and great experiences are guaranteed!

Llama trek and Tux Mill A tour for walkers of all ages Claudia & Josef Kröll

Together with our four legged friends, Cusco, Nero, Bernardo and Moritz we walk leisurely along the banks of the Tux Stream from La-nersbach to Madseit. As we walk, we have plenty of time to savour the beautiful landscape with all our senses as we adopt the leisurely pace of the llamas. You will learn how to lead the llamas and get to know them a little better. On our way, we can take a step back in time at Tuxer Mühle (Tux Mill). This water-powered mill dates back to 1839 and is still in use today during the summer months. Suitable for children from the age of 6.

Alpine Pastures Experience Zillergrund Take your time and savour with all your senses Antonia Muigg

What animals can be found roaming on mountain pastures? Why must the pastures be cleared of stones? What do alpine roses and wild thyme smell like? How does “Melchermuas” taste – a typical Tyrolean alpine snack? We walk together from Gasthof In der Au to the Sulzbodenalm alpine farm, where the farmers will welcome us and tell us fascinating stories about alpine life. We are also allowed to take a peek inside their alpine dwelling. We can discover the world of alpine animals in an entertaining way today, smell the alpine roses, gentian and co., and lend a hand on the alpine farm.

Volunteering for Nature: Mountain farming daily life Bio-diverse mountain meadows in GinzlingHerbert Grasl

The Zillertal Alps Nature Park is committed to protecting the habitat of nu-merous animal and plant species. With this in mind, we are looking for vo-lunteers who are willing to serve to protect nature in an honorary capacity. our mission is to en-courage people to volunteer for this good cause and spend one day of their holiday trying to help mountain farmers in their day-to-day lives. Support them together with the Nature Park Rangers in caring for their species-rich, rough pasturelands. These are an important food source for dairy farming and the basis for high quality dairy products! The grazing areas are located at 1,000 metres above sea level in Ginzling and it is imperative they are preserved for future generations.

In the footsteps of hunters and gatherers Exciting journey into the history of the Pfitscher Joch Hermann MuiggWe will walk in the area around the Pfitscher Joch, a striking alpine crossing from South Tyrol to the Zillertal Valley and the site of some recent sensati-onal Stone Age finds! During our journey back in time we will walk along the same paths used by Stone Age hunters. Back then, where you found animals, you could find people. They followed the animals, thereby ensuring heir own survival. Elevated look-out points, a Stone Age camp and former “workshops” can often be seen right next to the trail – we gain an intense insight into the lives of the mountain folk. The exciting „Boundless Pfitscher Joch “exhibition at the Lavitzalm -which we will visit - is dedicated to this theme. We can also learn interesting facts on the “eternal ice” and how glaciers have shaped the landscape.

We start the „Neumarkter Circuit” at the Schlegeis Reservoir and hike up from the Zamsgatterl to the Unterschrammachkar, always in the shadow of the mighty Schrammacher and Tux Main Ridge. From there we continue along a relatively new trail (built in 2006), to the Olpererhütte, which was also recently renovated in 2008. During an extended break, we can enjoy stunning views of the highest peaks and glaciers of the Zillertal Alps. Well refreshed, we then make our descent through forests of dwarf and Swiss-stone pine, down to the Schlegeis Reservoir, the starting point of this round tour.

Nature Photography Out and about with your camera and a natural wildlife photographer Hermann Muigg

Weather, light and atmosphere – it is the weather and the associated play of light which often seduces us into the world of photography. But land-scape photography is more than that! It is an artistic skill, and intensive study of the habitat and acquiring an eye for unspectacular “everyday nature“. The key to success is hard work and commitment whilst searching for the right light. The natural wildlife photographer Hermann Muigg gives you helpful tips on how to improve your results.

Nature Park Mountain Refuge Huts Discover the landscapes that shaped alpine history Hans Knauer

„In defiance of the storm, refuge for the wanderer“ – this maxim is carved in stone on the gable of the imposing Berliner Hut. Approximately one hund-red to one hundred and fifty years ago, the German and Austrian Alpine Associations gradually built shelters in inhospitable alpine locations, in predominantly breathta-kingly beautiful spots that are well worth making the effort to visit. Our Nature Park guides will explain how nature changes at increasing altitude levels, right up to the borders with rock and ice, where its inhabitants benefit from the situation or where nature knows its limits.

We set off in Lanersbach from the Tux-Center, a forest road leads us to our first goal, the Höllensteinhütte (1710 m). From there we are on the traces of the Swiss pine, that has given its name to this tour. We con-tinue our walk towards the Grieralm (1787 m) with its lovely little lake, the „Griererlacke“. From there beautiful views of the Tux Alps and the valley can be enjoyed. The walk continues at a relatively constantly level through alpine pastures to the Tulferalm (1700 m). A pleasant trail leads from there back down to the valley. In Madseit we will visit the Mehlerhaus with the Exhibition „Hidden Treasures“ (see p. 56).

Berliner Hut: Geology & Glaciers The „ Berliner Hütte“ glacier trail in the Zemmgrund Maria Fankhauser

The Berliner Hut is a popular base for mountain and glacier researchers. Em-bedded in a magnificent alpine scenery, the Berliner Hut is a symbol for the history of alpinism in the Zillertal valley. The deterioration of alpine glaciers is a visible indication of climate change. We will hike along the themed trail between Hornkees and Waxeggkees whilst finding out interesting facts on geology, for-mation of the Alps and its’ glaciers.

With Peter Habeler, who has already climbed five eight-thousand-metre peaks, you have the chance to do that. The peak of his career was the firstever ascent of Mt. Everest without additional oxygen together with Reinhold Messner in 1978. On this hike you can conquer your inner demons and climb your own “Everest”! „Steinbock.Worlds“ - Zillergrund Ibex.Worlds in Zillergrund. The alpine ibex is an animal that has a deeply rooted tradition at the Zillertal Alps Nature Park and, until recently, a very

chequered history. Up until the beginning of the 17th cen-tury there was a population of several hundred animals, which was eradicated in a few years. Despite attempts to reintroduce ibex to the Zillertal Valley, only imited success has been enjoyed. A small population currently lives wild in the depths of the valleys, although seldom seen by visi-tors to the Nature Park. You can find out interesting infor-mation on the ibex at the Steinbock.Welten in Zillergrund, as well as enjoy the opportunity to see a few live examples up close. Open daily in summer. Free admission!

„Glacier.Worlds“ - Nature Park House Ginzling This is no exhibition in the normal sense of the word: No glass showcases, no boring information boards, but rather interactive, multimedia stations with a hands-on approach: see, touch and

comprehend. The public Alpine Library is also located in the house. A small selection of books and maps as well as Nature Park gifts with our „Zillertaler Gletscherfloh“ logo is available for sale at the Nature Park Shop. ... Open daily in summer from 8.30 - 12.00 & 13.00 - 17.00 hours!

Exhibition „Hidden Treasures“ at the Mehlerhaus / Tux-Madseit A new exhibition opened its doors in 2014 at the listed Mehlerhaus in Tux. It is dedicated to the tre-asures found inside mountains

and caves: the geology, the crystals and exciting cave finds will be on display and a thousand year old piece of wood tells the history of its discovery... July - Sep-tember: Monday & Friday open from 13.00-18.00 hrs, free admission!

Cultur.Landscape.Worlds Mitterstall / Brandberg Cultural.Landscape.Worlds - one of the mountain farming cultural monu-ments in the Nature Park Region is

the Mitterstall (Mitter Barn). After renovation work was completed on this listed building in 2010, Mitter-stall forms the centre piece of a Nature Park exhibition called, „Brandberg – our cultural landscape through the ages“. The exhibition is spread over three rooms and tells of the harsh conditions alpine farmers had to endure, with details on the characteristic landscapes of pastures, mountain meadows and includes personal stories about the local people. Open daily in summer. Free admission!
