The works of Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) are fascinating, unique, and at the same time they challenge the conventional definitions of abstract art and its origins. Hilma af Klint strived to give expression to insights and experiences that were manifested in her inner world using an innovative universe of symbols and colours, unlike anything known at the beginning of the 20th century. For most visitors this Swedish artist will be a totally new and surprising acquaintance, among other reasons because she stated in her will that the ground-breaking paintings were to remain concealed from the public for at least twenty years after her death. Through this touring exhibition, organized by Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Hilma af Klint has finally aroused great international attention due to the occult, abstract visual universe and beauty of the works. Shown here are 250 paintings and works on paper, including early landscape studies, automatic drawings and her great central suite The Paintings for the Temple.

PHILIP GUSTON

EAST WING 4 JUNE – 7 SEPTEMBER

Philip Guston (1913-1980) is one of the most important American painters from the second half of the 20th century. From the end of the 1940s he was a highly respected member of the circle of Abstract Expressionist painters in New York, but around 1968 he changed course dramatically, abandoning abstraction for a strikingly figurative, almost comic-strip-like mode of expression. Guston thus became a standard-bearer for the revival of the figurative tradition in American art in the 1970s and 1980s. This exhibition, organized in collaboration with Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, marks the centenary of Guston’s birth with a concentrated selection of these late works – a milestone in American painting. The exhibition title Painting Smoking Eating implies that during the last ten years of his life Guston only drew and painted himself and his immediate surroundings. Combining misery, sensitivity and humour, this relationship with reality is transformed into a pictorial world of great human strength.

This summer’s major exhibition is a comprehensive presentation of one of the leading modernist artists. Emil Nolde (1867-1956) is a classic painter, a powerful colourist and one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism. His close ties with Denmark – both biographical and geographical – also give him a natural position in Danish art history, which makes it even more surprising to realise that the last comprehensive retrospective of his works in Denmark dates back many years. In the meantime, we can now draw on a wealth of recent research findings, some of which open up new fascinating perspectives on the artist and his work. This exhibition, organized in collaboration with Städel Museum, Frankfurt, presents an overview of Nolde’s entire career, presented in thematic chapters such as Origins, Seascapes, View of an Exotic World and Magus from the North. Included are works, which since Nolde’s death have only been shown – if at all – in his own house in Seebüll in Schleswig-Holstein.

The exhibition will clearly show how Emil Nolde experimented with different approaches to painting until he found his own characteristic style. Here you will find on show not only Nolde’s impressive landscapes and paintings of flowers, but also Berlin nightlife scenes as well as paintings from his voyage to the South Seas and images with religious content. One of the objectives of this retrospective has also been to locate the artist in his contemporary context. Therefor a major theme in itself is Nolde’s long life of nearly 90 years, his work as an artist, and his presence as a figure in Germany from the late 19th century to the post-war years. With generous loans from the Nolde Foundation Seebüll and several important loans from museums and private collectors, we have brought together more than 140 works, including 90 paintings. Offering a rare and exciting chance to learn more about the many varied facets of Emil Nolde’s life and work.
