Welcome from the Headteacher, As we reach the end of the school year can I once again thank you for your connued support for the school and your children. I hope this newsleer shows that Morriston is a true comprehensive school, providing opportunies and experiences for all our children. This year our sixth form students achieved outstanding A Level results, whilst over 60% of our Y11 achieved A*-C grades in English Language in January and we look forward to achieving excel- lent results in the summer. We ran trips to USA, Italy and France, put on a fantasc school producon with a cast of over 70 pupils, achieved tremendous sporng achievements, fundraised for local charies and put on a superb sen- ior cizens Christmas party. Special recognion must go to Holly Jones in Y11 who represented Wales at the commonwealth games in Australia, finishing 4th in the vault final. Holly missed out on a Bronze medal by the smallest of margins and is a huge talent for the future. We were delighted that a group of able and talented Y9 pupils took part in the Brilliant Club, working with PhD stu- dents from Swansea University. The results have been outstanding, with pupils producing work of A level and first year degree standard. This demonstrates the talent of Morriston pupils, and reiterates our message that our chil- dren are the equal of any pupil from anywhere in Wales. We have worked hard to improve communicaon with parents and carers, we would strongly encourage you to sign up to Parentmail, follow us on Twier and check our website regularly to keep fully up to date with everything going on in school. I wish you all a happy holiday and I look forward to welcoming our children back on Wednesday September 5th. Regards M. Franklin Summer Newsletter 2018 Football’s coming home to Morriston! School production of Hairspray Plays to rave reviews!

On March 21st. and 22nd. over 70 pupils from year groups 7 to 13 presented ” Hairspray” the musical. ”Hairspray is an incredibly challenging show and our students worked extremely hard over several months to meet the acting, singing and dancing skills required to present such a musical.

RE brings GSUS Live to School In February students visited the GSUS live

trailer in their R.E. lessons. GSUS Live is a mobile

education unit which is a multi-media classroom in a lorry trailer. It tells the story of three teenagers facing real-life issues in their lives, and how they get inspiration from the Bible to deal with their problems. Using touch-screen computers, stu-dents interacted with fictional characters through animations, instant chat, short educational films and music videos. They explored the themes of fear, forgiveness and rejection. We look forward to GSUS live visiting us again in September.

History News 'We were privileged to have been visited by a survivor of the Holocaust in May of this year. Joanna Milan spoke to our sixth form stu-dents and a number of year 8's about her experi-ences in Theresienstadt Concentration Camp. This visit was carried out after two of our sixth form students had visited Auschwitz Death Camp as part of the Holocaust Education Trust programme. The pupils that attended this talk were fascinated and it was a wonderful and moving experience for them.' 'During the Easter holidays the History Department took a group of sixth form and year 11 students to Paris. They visited the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, the Eiffel Tower and enjoyed a trip along the Seine. The pupils were lucky enough to spend a day at Euro-Disney which they thoroughly enjoyed. The pupils behaved impeccably and were a credit to the school.' 'We are finishing this academic year by taking our KS3 students to the London Dungeons and the Natural History Museum.'

Surf School At the end of May with the water temperature rising from a cold winter the Surf School returned to Morriston Comp. 30 pupils with 94% attendance and good behaviour took advantage of good condi-tions down on Llangennith beach. Progress Surf School ran the event and with their expert tuition, excellent progress was made and everybody was standing up by the end of the day. Well done to all students that took part and as the surf school goes from strength to strength at Morriston comp watch this space as we have exciting plans for 2019.

French Thriving in Morriston

It has been another

busy year in the French

department. In September, we celebrated the European Day of Languages, and in October and February we once again took part in the Cardiff University MFL Mentoring programme, in which both year 8 and 9 were involved in, followed by a reward and recognition trip to Swansea Univer-sity. At Easter, our Pupil Language Ambassadors ran a competition to create a French themed Easter egg. Congratulations and thank you to all pupils who got involved!

The annual maths department trip to Techniquest in Cardiff hap-pened last month with 45 year 7 pupils getting the chance to get out of the classroom and have some educational fun. The theme at Techniquest was Mathsmagic and pupils got to investigate tricks of probability, binary code and examine surfaces and connections in toplogy. All pupils had a great day out and were extremely well behaved. Well done Year 7!

Record attendance 93.9%!

At Morriston we believe that excellent attendance is vital for pupils to achieve their full potential both academically and holistically. At Morriston we have worked very hard over recent years to improve attendance and it has improved incrementally each year. You will be familiar with the poster below that shows the number of lessons are lost when children miss school! Throughout the year a variety of incentives and rewards have been offered to the children to emphasise the importance of attending school regularly. These rewards have included Christmas hampers, free chip Friday and prizes offered by various local businesses to name but a few. I am delighted to be able to announce that our attendance figure for this academic year is our highest ever at 93.9% Well done to all our pupils!

Eco News

In March, yr 6 pupils from our local primary schools joined our year 9s for a

Plan-It Eco visit where they listened to Phil and Javier, who spoke about the

damage we are doing to the rain forests and the im-

portance of protecting them for future generations. They

had the opportunity to ask Javier about his own life and

upbringing, and they had some really interesting thought-

provoking questions to ask. Well done !

The end of another busy year for the Sixth Form at Morriston Comprehensive School. As usual the students have done a fantastic job with a number of charity and community events. Year 13 have been involved with raising money for Maggies Cancer Centre. The Sixth Form also organised a Senior Citizens Party for 100 OAP's. This was accompanied by the delivery of 75 food parcels and the delivery of 50 presents to the Childrens' Ward at Morriston Hospital. The students also took 60 Easter eggs to the Children's Ward in April. On the academic side we have made numerous applications to university with students successfully applying for a range of academic courses including Medicine, Pharmacy, Accountancy, Creative Writing, Fashion Merchan-dising to name a few. We also have had a number of our Year 12 students on the Seren course for gifted and talented students. Two of these have gained places on summer schools at Cambridge and Oxford. All of Year 12 were invited to Swansea University for a day in June to visit both the Singleton campus and the Bay campus. As a result of this two students are attending a three day Business course in July. For other students who are leaving for the world of work or to begin apprenticeships we have had a number of speakers in the school from institutions as diverse as the RAF and the DVLA. We are very proud of the achievements of all of our young people and I would personally like to wish them every success and happiness with the future. Mr Evans Director of Sixth form
