Chairman Highlight:Donna and Jared Murayama

Donna and Jared Murayama’s “aloha” to the Trojan Family began in 2004 when their oldest daughter Jaimie was accepted to the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Even though Jaimie and her younger sister Cara have long since graduated from USC, you’ll still see Donna and Jared at countless USC events, with Jared brandishing the Trojan Spirit in his Hawaiian shirt—or with “USC” shaved at the back of his head for the most formal of events. The couple, who met in the dorms at the University of Hawaii, have taken the Trojan “ohana” as their own.

Donna and Jared were both raised to value education, so it’s no surprise that after supporting their children’s elementary, middle and high schools, they quickly connected with the USC Associates program.

The Murayamas were ecstatic when Jaimie was accepted to USC, and they began giving through the Associates soon after she began her undergraduate studies. Jaimie received both her bachelor’s (2008) and master’s (2009) in electrical engineering from USC Viterbi. Cara followed her older sister to USC and earned a bachelor’s in public policy, management and planning (2011) and a double master’s in gerontology and health administration (2013). Jaimie and Cara share their parents’ passion for philanthropy and recently became Junior-level members of the Associates.

Donna and Jared joined the Associates at the Dean’s level in 2006. Through their engagement with and generous support of various schools and programs, they continued to

upgrade their membership level and became Chairman Associates in 2011; five years later, in 2016, they became members of the Widney Society. As Chairman members, they have enjoyed meeting and befriending many amazing Trojans outside of their current circle of friends.

The Murayama family is motivated to support academics with the hope that the students who directly benefit from scholarships will one day give back as well. In addition to the Associates, Donna and Jared also stay involved with campus life through the Trojan Athletic Fund, Swim with Mike and Viterbi Innovation Partners.

Jared owns Ohanahou, a specialized software company that services the intelligence community. He also owns

commercial real estate on Kauai, as well as several businesses there, including the Konohiki Seafoods fish market (which ironically sells more chicken than fish!), a construction company and a ranch raising grass-fed Black Angus. Jaimie and Cara live in Hermosa Beach and San Jose, respectively, and enjoy meeting up with their parents at Associates picnics during home football games.

Provost Highlight: Larry and Susan Bettino

Tell us a bit about your family.Susan and I have three children—Matthew (20) at Dartmouth, Mia (18) at USC and Daniel (17), who just received his acceptance to the USC Marshall School of Business for fall 2018! We raised them in the snowy country of Bronxville, New York, just north of New York City.

Susan was a bank trader for Citigroup until she decided to stay home to raise the kids, and I’ve been in venture capital in technology for over 30 years. The kids attended the local public school in Bronxville, consuming a steady diet of sports (baseball, basketball, lacrosse, field hockey and golf) and social and community activities. We have been lucky and blessed.

When did you begin giving to the university? When Mia accepted admission to USC, I was introduced to the Associates program by a wonderful parent of a two-child USC family, USC Associates Provost-level member Michael Schloss, who encouraged me to look into the program. I did so immediately, hoping for many excuses to come visit Mia.

What inspired you and your family to give? As a family, we have always stressed how lucky we are to live in a time and place that has provided our family with opportunities and comforts that many do not have. We try to pay back our good fortune through acts of service and giving to deserving institutions that make a difference in people’s lives. USC, with its commitment to providing opportunities to students with ability and passion, regardless of their means, is definitely one such institution.

What impact did you want to make when you made your gift? Our gifts are not likely to move the needle in the way much larger and generous donations do, but we think giving at any level is important to show commitment and belief in the goals of a program—voting with your feet (and checkbook)!

Why do you give through the USC Associates? The genius of the Associates program is its flexibility to tailor giving in ways that specifically target the passions of our USC student, as well as areas of interest for Susan and me. Mia was accepted into USC Annenberg, and we naturally wanted to support the School for Communication

and Journalism and the great leadership Dean Willow Bay is providing. But the Associates leadership also directed us to an Annenberg program called Media, Economics & Entrepreneurship, an experiential program for students to get hands-on experience at large and small media companies at the forefront of innovation and industry disruption. As a venture capitalist and entrepreneur, I found that program extremely appealing. The Associates also introduced us to the outstanding work and curricula at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and the USC Marshall School of Business; we decided to support both of these highly regarded institutions as well. It was fun trying to match our interests and passions with our giving, and USC provides that opportunity.

What have you most enjoyed about your USC Associates experience and membership? The Associates program has exceeded any expectations I had before we joined. The engagement and communication with members far surpasses any other similar affinity group I’ve ever seen. There is a constant stream of USC events, both in L.A. and in our home area, that build camaraderie and community among all the families. It is truly a fun and entertaining group. The huge surprise has been the staff of the Associates program. I never would have imagined how much attention and care they have given to making our experience at USC meaningful and memorable. The Associates have made me feel almost like an alumnus.

Favorite USC memory? Dropping off Mia at her dorm room at New North, which was sad but also incredibly exciting. She has had no doubts about her decision to join the Trojan Family, and neither have we.

Q&A with USC Associates Student Scholar:Ben Hiller

The USC Associates awards more than $1 million in scholarships to more than 50 undergraduate students each year, thanks to your annual membership gifts. We are proud to support the most-deserving students, based on their merits, and continue to be amazed by their journeys to graduation.

USC Associates Trustee Scholarship-recipient Ben Hiller is a Class of 2018 graduate who experienced many new things over the last four years at USC. We asked Ben to share them with us.

Hi, Ben! Where are you from? I’m from Clemmons, North Carolina, which is just outside of Winston-Salem, not too far from Charlotte.

Do you come from a big family?Yes, I’m the youngest of four, with two brothers and a sister. I also have five nieces now.

Has anyone else in your family attended USC?Yes, my older brother attended USC and majored in narrative studies.

What sold you on USC? I love the area. I got to visit my older brother on campus when I was in high school…and it probably helped that I visited him in the winter, when it was 20 degrees in North Carolina!

What is your major?Linguistics. One of my favorite parts about attending USC is that I was able to switch majors while I figured out my interests. I studied mechanical engineering, computer science (games), print journalism and philosophy before I locked in linguistics.

Do you have a minor?Russian. I took German in high school and wanted to learn another language that was not so difficult that it would take years before I could speak it fluently. I chose Russian after I took a Russian history GE.

Any favorite classes?I really enjoyed my Culture and Values Thematic Option course, along with its attached writing course.

Professor Edwin McCann is so knowledgeable about history, philosophy and culture—especially cinema— and his approachable teaching style tied together seemingly esoteric material with modern content in a relevant way. Likewise, Professor Trisha Tucker taught writing in a very rare way that has influenced not just my writing, but my entire worldview.

What have you been involved with outside of the classroom?I was in the Archery Club for my first few years and had a lot of fun with that. During the 2016 primaries, I participated in voter-registration canvassing. I also started a Young Democratic Socialists of America chapter at USC, and am currently working with Students for Justice in Palestine.
