message from the mayor

Here in Montréal, we aredoing everything we can to makesure that families enjoy a pleasant andpositive living environment.With thisgoal in mind, we have taken importantsteps on issues such as housing, publictransit, recreation, green spaces andthe library network.

In addition to these initiatives,the quality of life is growing forMontrealers thanks to the city’s richprofusion of cultural activities.Thissummer, no fewer than 350 events –most of them free, and most of themsuitable for all – will enliven the manyparks around town. La RoulotteTravelling Theatre is back again thisyear to present another classic seriesof open-air shows, with a stageersion of The Wizard of Oz. For aneclectic program of great events indance, music and cinema, you needonly find your way to the heart ofParc La Fontaine, where the Théâtrede Verdure is heating up for anotherseason.A sure highlight of this programwill be Haïti en folie, a celebrationof the Haitian community’s50th anniversary in Montreal.

The calendar is brimming withchoices – Montrealers will have all theactivities on offer in the Quartier desspectacles, at Parc Jean-Drapeau, inthe Old Port, and at nature museumslike the Biodôme. Every corner of thecity will come alive this summer, givingresidents a special chance to see thelatest work of some great creativetalents.

I would therefore invite you tobrowse through the new summerissue of Accès culture, and discoverall the marvellous events happening inthe different boroughs of the city. Besure to keep a copy on hand, so youcan get the most from the summerarts calendar – it makes Montréal agreat place to live!

Dorothy is a young orphan. One day, she and her dog Toto arecarried away by a tornado to the strange land of Oz, a place full ofbizarre animals, wicked witches and good fairies. Desperate to findher way home to her parents, Dorothy follows a yellow brick roadin search of the great magician who rules the country– the Wizardof Oz. Keeping her company are the Scarecrow, who is hoping tofind a brain; the Tin Man, who only needs a heart; and the CowardlyLion, who just wants a little bit of courage.The Wizard tells herthat to find her parents, she will have to defeat the Wicked Witchof the West! This production combines wild puppetry and excitingmusic to offer a show that is sure to delight people of all ages.
