Jessica Winsheimer, a Jefferson County Parks and Recreation aide supervisor, said camps are available for preschool-age students, and ele- mentary and middle school students; in addition, there are some adult activities. Located at the corner of Lawrence and Tyler streets in Uptown, the county-owned Port Townsend Community Center is home to senior citizen programs (upstairs) and youth programs (downstairs, in the rec cen- ter). Due to budget choices, Jefferson County closed the rec center in January 2010. However, thanks to student and community activism, the center was able to reopen in July 2011. Chris Adkins, now 15, said he started a petition to bring back the rec center. “I didn’t have anywhere to go,” he said. Adkins added he had made the center a part of his daily life. In school, he went from classroom to classroom collecting signatures, and ended up with about 600. Adkins spoke before the Port Townsend City Council and explained the center’s importance. “I talked about how I really need- ed the rec center and how the com- munity needs it,” he said. “You feel safe here, it’s a really comfortable environment for kids of every age. You’re never bored here.” Winsheimer said Adkins’ actions provide a positive example of youth activism and gave a great illustration of why the center matters. “You do have a voice,” she said of the center’s younger customers. “I think it’s kind of unique to our town,” she said. “People take owner- ship of what they want and they need.” The center’s summer hours begin on June 18: Monday-Thursday, 1:30-8:30 p.m.; Friday, 1:30-9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and closed Sunday. It boasts pool and foosball tables in the common area, and Winsheimer said kids can use an Xbox 360 gam- ing console with a Kinect motion sensor to play active sports games. She added that board games, such as chess, are also available. “It just doesn’t need to be move- ment of the body; it can be movement of the mind as well,” she said. The center has a full gym with a stage and small-scale rock-climbing wall for younger customers. Winsheimer said the center’s games room, gym or multipurpose room can be rented for private events. She said it costs $12 per two hours, and the center asks for 10 percent of the revenue from ticketed events. For parents and kids wanting to check out the center before the sum- mer camps start, Winsheimer said, there’s a free ping pong tournament and root-beer-float party on Saturday, June 2 at 5 p.m. Weeklong day camps start on June 18. The day camps are for ages 6-10 and cover a variety of subjects and activities. The Outdoor Adventure Camp is June 18-22 at the H.J. Carroll Park in Chimacum. Campers spend the week hiking, biking and playing vari- ous sports. The Food and Fun Camp runs June 25-29. Campers cook fresh food, bake treats and create food art, as well as explore centers such as the parks and the library. The Art and Aquatics Camp takes place July 9-13. It involves pool time as well as opportunities to work with clay, painting materials, fiber arts and sculpture. The Kid Fit Camp, scheduled for July 23-27, combines athletic activi- ties with cooking and gardening, as well as trips to the pool, Fort Worden and Chetzemoka Park. Art and Aquatics Camp is offered for a second session, July 30-Aug. 3, and Outdoor Adventure returns Aug. 6-10. The camps’ activities are differ- ent the second time around, but each camp’s focus remains the same. The day camps cost $150 for the whole week or $42 per day. There’s a $5 discount for each sibling enrolled in the same camp. Scholarships for camps are available; applications can be picked up at the rec center. Snacks and art materials are provided, but campers need to bring their own lunches. For younger children, the Kinder Camp provides activities and enter- tainment. The two-day camp is for ages 4-5 and costs $58. The Kinder Camp has sessions on July 2-3 and July 5-6 at the rec cen- ter, and on Aug. 13-14 and Aug. 16-17 at H.J Carroll Park. Camp activi- ties include sports fundamentals, preschool fitness, art activities and outdoor play. Also available is a basketball camp for ages 6-13. Running July 16-19 and hosted at the Mountain View Commons gym, the camp teaches fun- damental skills such as dribbling, shooting and passing. Cost is $69. For slightly older children, there is the opportunity to become counselor interns. The Junior Counselors in Training (CIT) program is for 11- to 14-year-olds who want to assist with running the summer camps and make the transition from camper to counselor. “They’re that in-between glue that brings the camp together,” Winsheimer said. Applications for the CIT positions were due on May 11, but according to Winsheimer, interested teens may still apply. The fee is $150 for a full- day training session plus two weeks of camp. Registration forms and applica- tions can be picked up at the rec center at 620 Tyler St., Port Townsend, or downloaded online at countyrec.com. “You feel safe here; it’s a really comfortable environment for kids of every age. You’re never bored here.” Chris Adkins, 15 The rec center is a popular after-school Port Townsend hangout for boys and girls of various ages. This summer, in addi-tion to award-winning farm camps, Sunfield Farm in Port Hadlock offers week-long camps in traditional and primitive skills, and practical arts taught by guest artists and adventur-ers.

Sunfield has an 82-acre campus dedicated as “Land for Learning,” locat-ed between State Route 19 (Rhody Drive) and Tamanowas Rock/Anderson Lake State Park in Port Hadlock.

Sunfield farm camps offer children (ages 4-19) a chance to be in nature, and to learn one of life’s most empowering skills: growing food. Campers tend Sunfield’s animals – Nubian goats, Cotswold sheep, free-ranging chick-ens, and rabbits – as well as organic fruits and vege-tables. Camps are enlivened by singing, games and craft activities.

New camps offer primi-tive and traditional explorer and wilderness survival

skills.For most camp sessions,

parents may choose morn-ing, afternoon or full-day options, from one week to six weeks long. Sunfield Shepherds 4-H and Students of the Land teen farm apprenticeships are multi-week commitments.

To register for Sunfield Summer Camps, call 385-3658 or visit sunfieldfarm.org.

Sunfield recognizes that every child is different. Some children connect with nature by tending animals, others by harvesting plants and making herbal potions. Others love to make art-work, or they pretend to live in a different time or culture that demands acute atten-tion to nature for survival. In every case, a child’s inter-est can create the opportu-nity to connect deeply with the natural world.

Proceeds from Sunfield Summer Camps go to a com-munity education program, through which Sunfield offers public workshops and

serves developmentally dis-abled teens/young adults, at-risk youths, and visiting elementary school children.

Sunfield offers farm tours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during July and the first week of August. Outings are great for grand-parents and grandchildren, for groups of adult friends, or a morning activity for out-of-town guests. Please call 385-3658 at least 24 hours in advance.
