PARKS, RECREATION & CULTURECommunity EventsThe City of Chilliwack maintains a community events page on its website at www.chilliwack.com. If you are interested in attending local community events, check it out. If you are a local not-for-profit organization and you wish to promote your event, there is a simple, self-help form to “add” your event to the list.

Rotary Vedder River TrailThe popular Rotary Vedder River trail runs for 15.5km along the north dyke of the Vedder River, and with a surface that is suitable for walking, running, cycling or horseback riding, it has become a popular venue for outdoor leisure and recreation activities. Parking areas are located at Vedder, Peach, Lickman and Sumas Prairie Roads. Picnic tables and benches are situated along the trail. The Parks, Recreation & Culture Department is committed to the ongoing development of new trails to enhance the existing 34 kilometers of trails throughout Chilliwack.

Great Blue Heron Nature ReserveThe Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a 130-hectare site managed by the City of Chilliwack and the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society. Located on the south end of Sumas Prairie Road, between the dyke and the Vedder River, this area was formerly known as the Wet Bridge Training Area for the Department of Defence. This unique undyked floodplain habitat is home to over 90 Great Blue Heron nests and a wide variety of rare wildlife and vegetation. The impressive Rotary Interpretive Centre, built by Rotary Club of Chilliwack and generously donated to the City of Chilliwack serves as an educational centre for park visitors. The Great Blue Heron site is open to the public 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m. to dusk. For further information on pro-grams or volunteer opportunities, please call 604-823-6603.

Portable Display ScreenWhat is 10 feet high, 17 feet long and contains over 245,000 LED light? The City of Chilliwack’s new portable display screen! The display screen is permanently mounted on a 30 foot trailer and the viewing screen can be elevated an additional 5 feet for better site lines. In addition, the screen is capable of displaying DVD/video presentations, cable TV, or a live camera feed. The screen is available to rent for community events. For information on availability and rental rates contract the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department at 604-793-2904.

The Chilliwack Cultural Centre project is nearing completion. It will be operational late summer and it is scheduled to open its doors officially in early fall 2010. This project brings together strong partnerships with the Chilliwack Arts Council, Chilliwack Academy of Music, and the City, benefitting both the capital

program and the operating/programming aspects of the facility. The Cultural Centre is a purpose-built facility designed to support a range of cultural activities with a focus on the visual and per-forming arts. There is more information on this exciting project on pages 24-25 of this issue of the Leisure Guide.

PARKS, RECREATION & CULTURE

Community Sport Profile - Cheam Leisure CentreThe City of Chilliwack’s newest community recreation centre is now open. The Cheam Leisure Centre became operational in April of this year and celebrated its Grand Opening on May 15.

“The new Cheam Leisure Centre has only been open for a short while and it’s already become an important community asset,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “We’re thrilled so many residents are using the facility and encourage those who haven’t been in yet to come down and see what they’re missing.”

The Cheam Leisure Centre project in Garrison Crossing included construction of a new 6-lane, 25 metre pool with change rooms, a gradual-entry family leisure pool with play features and lazy river. This complements the previously existing, double-sized gymnasium, weight, fitness and program areas and two squash courts.

A fitness facility upgrade is planned as a second phase, proposed

for some time in the future as funding allows.

A park is also being developed on the property adjacent to the Cheam Leisure Centre and another small park area across the street. It is anticipated that a free outdoor water spray area within this park, will be completed and open by late summer 2010. All of these new community amenities are located at the corner of Garrison Boulevard and the new Market Way. They are all just minutes from residents in Sardis, Vedder Crossing and Promontory and within walking or biking distance to many residents in the area.

General schedules, program and facility information can be found starting on page 26 of this issue.
