Fighting for orangutansKid conservationist Jack Dalton is the latest local celebrity to share reading suggestions with you on our website. One of his picks is a book he wrote himself: Kawan the Orangutan: Lost in the Rainforest.
Last year, Time for Kids and Nickelodeon recognized Jack’s work to preserve the orangutan by naming him a top 20 finalist for Kid of the Year.

Free tickets to Bedrock Gardens
Now you can use your library card to borrow a pass for free admission to Bedrock Gardens. This 37-acre public garden integrates unusual botanical specimens and unique sculpture into an inspiring landscape journey. Once a historic farm and private garden, the property is now a public oasis of art and horticulture.

Free lunches for kids Kids ages 18 and under can get a free bag lunch at the library during summer vacation. Lunches are available Monday–Friday (except July 5), 11 am–2 pm.
Kids can ask any staff member for a lunch, or use curbside pickup. No ID or registration is required. The program
is sponsored by the USDA Summer Food Service Program and Southern NH Services. The library is an equal opportunity provider.

Win prizes in summer reading challenge
June 9–August 14No matter how old you are, you can join a Nashua Public Library summer reading pro-gram. Four programs are available: Birth– Preschool, Kids (Kindergarten–Grade 5), Teens (Grades 6–12), and Adults (Ages 18+).
The theme of this year’s programs is “Tails and Tales.” Challenge yourself to earn raffle tickets and prizes as you read. The more time you spend reading, the more chances you have to win prizes!
“Children who don’t read during summer vacation fall behind when school starts in the fall,” said Assistant Library Director Jenn Hosk-ing. “This decline in their reading abilities increases as they get older. The library wants to help parents maintain their children’s skills by motivating kids to read every day.” Summer reading programs do just that. And because they’re available for all ages, they make reading a family affair.
Summer reading eventsFor the youngest readers, we will continue to hold Virtual Storytimes and Babies and Books Zooms. Elementary-age kids can take a virtu-al trip to the Houston Zoo, try animal-theme yoga, and meet Jack Dalton, Nashua’s own kid conservationist. They can also pick up Take-n-Make crafts to do at home.
Teens can also grab Take-n-Make craft kits, or do them outside on the Library Plaza with other teens.
Adults can get in on the animal theme too, at a presentation about bizarre birds, a trivia night, craft classes, and more. And all ages will enjoy an in-person, outdoor, exotic ani-mal visit from Wildlife Encounters.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi is the selection for the 2021 Nashua Reads: One City, One Book program. The goal of the One City, One Book program is to get as many Nashuans as possible to
read the same book and talk about it with friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors.
About the book & authorBorn in Ghana in the 1700s, Effia and Esi are half-sisters. Effia marries an English colonial and lives a life of luxury in his Ghanaian castle. Esi, captured in a tribal war, is shipped to America and sold into slavery. Homegoing follows the lives of these two women and their descendants, illuminating the injustices of racism and slavery over the past 300 years.
Yaa Gyasi was born in Ghana and raised in Alabama. She earned a B.A. in English from Stanford and an M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Yaa’s many honors include the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize and the PEN/Hemingway Award for Best First Novel.
This year kids can participate in Nashua Reads too! Two books, Clayton Byrd Goes Underground and One Crazy Summer, both by Rita Williams-Garcia, have been selected as the 2021 youth titles. An author visit and other related events will take place in the fall.

Nashua Reads eventsThe library will host author Yaa Gyasi in October. Also planned are talks by the authors of The Cooking Gene: Tracing My African American Story Through Food, of Sunflower Sisters, and of Driving While Black; a reenactment of the story of George Washington’s runaway slave; and a talk on archaeological findings about the lives of Black and Indigenous people in colonial New Hampshire.
