The Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation provides approximately 100,000 meals per month to about 4,000 children.It also purchases cleaning material and toiletries for these charities as part of its sustainable living projects, and treatschildren to various outings, including trips to Sun City and the Johannesburg Zoo, numerous clothing shoppingexcursions to Jet Stores as well as meal treats at Nandos. The Foundation also focuses heavily on educationopportunities through the provision of school uniforms, stationery, and educational equipment. Even though education isa key priority area, the Foundation also believes in improving the basic living conditions of their supported charities,which includes renovations, additions and alterations to the homes that the Foundation cares for. The Foundation isEmpowerdex rated at 95 percent.

Maureen Muka’s goal is to assist her communityand learners at the Bambi Care Crèche by givingthem not just three nutritious meals daily but a goodeducation as well. Bambi Care Crèche caters tochildren between the ages of six months and nineyears and since 2006, has been providing food toorphaned children on weekends. The school workswith children and ensures that they are school readywhen moving on to grade 1. Maureen Mabuka, thefounder of the crèche, has a morning job whichenables her to pay the two qualified teachers,cleaner and cook who work at the crèche. Maureenhas many goals for Bambi Care including owning thecurrent property she is renting which will give herthe opportunity to be more hands on with the schooland children. The crèche is open from 05h00 to19h00 daily.

Baby Moses was founded in 2003 to provide a place of safety for the many abused,orphaned, poverty stricken, raped and HIV affected children. With 75 children in theircare, the sanctuary strives to provide them with a loving, caring support base wheretheir medical nutritional and educational needs are taken care off. The NCCF will notonly be assisting them with regular grocery and toiletry supplies, but will also help toequip their therapy centre with educational toys, purchase much needed bunk bedsand mattresses and have our builder visit their property to quote on the completion oftheir therapy centre and children’s animal/petting farm.

The Banakekeleni Orphanage was established in 2003 andaccommodates 15 children from the Alexandra community betweenthe ages 3 to 15. The children are provided with school uniforms,three meals a day as well as lunch boxes. All children attend localschools. The orphanage provides both a safe haven as well asnurturing care for children who would otherwise find themselveshomeless and uneducated. This centre does not receive any form offinancial support from the government and relies only on supportfrom businesses and the local community.

Caritas Home has a total of 24 resident children with special needs who receive specialised attention from a play therapist, aphysiotherapist and a paediatrician. This home strives to give these children the best education possible but faces the chal-lenge of transporting the older children to seven different schools.

Caroline’s, established on 2001, operates a safe house, pre-school and day care centrewith up to 15 resident children and a total of 98 children in their care. Disabled,orphaned, foster and street children aged 3 months to 13 years are given daily nutrition,life orientation skills, school readiness programmes and a loving, safe environment inwhich to grow. Their playground is a delight and their classroom is colourful and inviting,but in need of more educational equipment, little mattresses and blankets which theNCCF will provide. There is also a desperate need for tracksuits, vests, socks andsneakers for ages 3 – 14 years which again will be purchased by The Foundation. Wehave assured Caroline on-going support, especially with her grocery needs as she has somany mouths to feed.

Coach is an integration of St Nicholas and St Joseph’s Homes which were both established in 1915 and provide a residentialand family environment for children aged 0 – 18 years, as well as food, education, clothing and necessities. Children areplaced in these 2 homes by the courts once their abuse and neglect has been identified. Currently 30 children areaccommodated in the 2 homes where qualified staff provide 24 hour care, monitor school progress and ensure that they willbe healed and stabilized by giving them a sense of belonging. The NCCF provided not only groceries and toiletries, but also anumber of essential appliances required by Coach for the homes. They are assured of our ongoing support.

The Daycare Preschool Group was established in August 2010, operating as amother body for 16 centres in Ivory Park and Tembisa. The children attending thevarious daycare centres are aged 3 months to 6 years and are all fromdisadvantaged communities. The centres operate from 06h00 to 17h00, Mondays toFridays. 1,456 children attend the 16 daycare pre-schools and receive breakfast,lunch and an afternoon snack. The schools teach literacy, numeracy and basic lifeskills. They are building a generation of hope with the aim of having these childrenenter primary school as creative and confident youngsters.

This day care centre is situated in the Motsoaledi informal settlement in a shack area andis itself a cluster of shacks where 35 children receive daily pre-school education. The threeteachers endeavor to develop the children holistically and provide them a safe andwelcoming environment on a daily basis. The NCCF has repaired the leaking structureswith a new roof on one of the shacks, has provided mattresses, groceries and educationalequipment and will continue with ongoing support.

This daycare centre is located in Alexandra. It cares for 39 children aged 2 – 6 years from Mondays to Fridays. EmuseniWenkosi provides meals and early learning programs to the children. They accept any child brought to them by parents whoare in need of their services, but mainly concentrate on those with previously disadvantaged backgrounds and orphans. Thecentre was established in 1998.

Epworth Children’s Village is a residential care centre for children between the ages of3 and 18 years. These children are placed at the centre by the children’s court as theyare deemed to be at risk as a result of abuse, neglect, abandonment, orphan hood orspecial needs. These special needs include behavioural challenges, medical needs anddevelopmental delays. This children’s village provides psychotherapy, play therapy,occupational therapy assessment, education and career assessments. These servicesare not only provided to these children but to the rest of the disadvantaged people inthe community who would not be able to afford such professional services otherwise.

Established in 2004 in Katlehong, the home has been fully renovated by Nashua Limitedwith assistance from Nedbank, Simba and Webber Wentzel and now accommodates 45abandoned, abused and orphaned children some of whom are HIV positive. The home alsoruns a daycare centre in the local church hall. The 46 children who attend are of indigentparents and are thus unable to pay school fees. Nevertheless, they receive schooling andmeals from Monday to Friday. A soup kitchen is also available from the home and feeds130 children every Wednesday and Saturday.

Hugh’s Haven is a day care centre for children hailing from financial and socially disadvantaged families. There are more than100 pre-school children, 18 aftercare children and six staff members who all receive breakfast and a cooked lunch every day.Operating from a rented house in Yeoville, these children take part in an art programme and participate in an annual concertand year end party.

This crèche, established in 2006 accommodates 70 children aged 1 – 6 years.The centre works closely with the department of social development to empowertheir local community on issues pertaining to child care as their area is rife withwomen and child abuse, unemployment and many other social ills. Joy at Workstrives to provide a healthy and safe environment for all the children in theircare, teach them life skills, singing and dancing, boost their self- esteem andprepare them for entry into primary school. Most of all they provide them withlove and respect. The NCCF has already donated mattresses, groceries,toiletries and educational equipment to the crèche and will continue theirsupport of this facility.

Established in January 2008 for children aged 3 months to 6 years, with the current number in their daily care being 84. Thecentre aims to develop early childhood learning, identify vulnerable and disadvantaged children and in so doing, give them asense of belonging in the community. It provides a healthy and safe environment for the children in their care. The NCCF hasjust completed renovations to the large school classroom (a converted garage) and also provided groceries and educationalequipment to the facility.

Children who have been abandoned, orphaned or living with HIV/AIDS are housed atthe Lambano Sanctuary and given anti-retroviral treatment. Furthermore, thesechildren are given meals and support as well as most of them are in good health dueto good nutrition, medical care and a loving environment. After three years of planningand fundraising, the sanctuary has managed to open a 12 bed hospice for thesechildren. Established in 2001, the home houses 30 children.

Established in May 2008 in Protea Glen, Soweto, the centre currently has atotal of 130 children aged 1 – 6 years, who are cared for from Monday toFriday. The aim of the centre is to develop the children socially, emotionally,physically and intellectually in preparation for primary schooling. The childrenreceive breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack.

Lorentzville was established in 2004 and currently accommodates more than 70 children in their day care and pre-schoolfacility. The centre offers a nutritional feeding scheme, recognized training and skills development and school readinesstraining for grade R children. The centre operates weekdays from 06h30 until 17h30 and provides the children with playfacilities, story- telling, writing skills, drawing and arts. The NCCF has provided them with groceries, toiletries, face cloths andtowels as well as educational equipment. The centre will also soon have an enclosed patio area and new washing linescourtesy of The Foundation.

This day care and pre-school was established in 2002 in Soweto. The admission isfor children aged 3 months to 6 years and currently 42 children are being cared for.The pre-school children learn numeracy, literacy and life skills through the mediumsof painting, cutting, pasting, drawing and dough playing as well as through educationaltoys, books and home play roles. The children arrive at 06h00 and are collected at19h00. They receive 3 meals a day as well as a snack. The centre is regularlyassessed by social workers, nurses and inspectors. Mama’s Day Care were thrilledwhen the NCCF completed renovations to their centre with a new roof, ceiling boards,and painting. They reported that they have no need to place buckets all over thehome to catch the water pouring in.

The Matjele Community Project, established in 2008, is an organisation that looks after 235 children; among them areorphans, vulnerable children and child headed households. Operating from Monday to Friday between 08h00 and 16h30,children receive lunch as well as food parcels for child headed households. In addition, counselling is also provided, as well asassistance with application of birth certificates, identity documents, disability and child support grants. The organisation alsoeducates the local community about the dangers of contracting HIV/AIDS and TB, and creates awareness about children’srights. Very needy children in the area receive clothing and school uniforms.

Nkosinathi opened in 2005 to provide an effective childcare service for disadvantagedchildren aged 6 months to 6 years . The facility provides a nutritional feeding scheme forthe children during the day, life orientation skills for those aged 4 – 6 years and a schoolreadiness programs for grade R candidates. More than 50 children are cared for from06h00 to 17h00 Mondays to Fridays.

The Nomonde Children’s Home was founded by Nomonde Duda, a retired professionalnurse who has since retirement, been moved by orphaned children while working as acaregiver. The home houses orphaned and abandoned children whose families areaffected by HIV/AIDS. These children are under the age of 10 and about 88% of themare HIV positive. All 45 children are given care and support, and toddlers have a crèchebased at the home. The primary school children all attend local schools.

Orlando Children’s Home was established in 1940 and is managed by members of the community. The home is registered toaccommodate 60 children who are abandoned, orphaned, abused, and neglected and many infected by HIV/AIDS. This homeaccommodates children as young as three months old. Some of the programmes offered by this home include running a SkillsDevelopment Centre and an outreach programme aimed at teaching children how to protect themselves from abuse. Theorganisation also runs a crèche for 80 local children aged 2½ to 6 years old.

This crèche accommodates 105 children aged 1 – 7 years - some orphaned, others living with HIV/AIDS, learners withdisabilities and a few with special educational needs. They are nurtured in a warm and caring environment where theireducational, nutritional and social needs are met. Play therapy, reading, homework supervision for school going children andlife skills are just some of the programmers on offer at Pelonomi. The NCCF will assist with grocery/toiletry supplies and willalso purchase educational equipment for the crèche which is assured of our on-going support.

Open daily from Monday to Friday, this organisation cares for and feeds childrenwith cerebral palsy in Soweto. Some of these children have poor vision, learningand hearing disabilities. Ratanang’s objectives include the running of a day carecentre for children with multiple disabilities, providing frequent and continuousstimulation, offering moral, spiritual and psychological support, encouragingmothers to speak freely about their children’s disabilities and educating themabout cerebral palsy and HIV/AIDS.

St Mary’s, established in 1902, houses 52 children who have been abused, neglected or orphaned, with some being affectedor infected by the HIV/AIDS virus. The home provides a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for the children in theircare. They ensure that all educational, nutritional, developmental and social skills are afforded to the children. Because most ofthe children are placed in the home through the Children’s Court, their staff interact very closely with the Department of SocialDevelopment. The NCCF has purchased groceries and toiletries for the children and will continue their support of St Mary’sChildren’s Home.

This Salvation Army assisted project was established in 1921 and today houses 47 girls aged 3– 18 years. The girls are all committed to the care of the home by the Children’s Court becauseof abuse, neglect, poverty or abandonment. It is at Strathyre that they are cared for in a secureand loving home environment, attend local schools and receive academic and life skills supportfrom the staff. The NCCF has provided the home with groceries, toiletries, cutlery and crockeryand will continue to assist them.

Established in 2007 to offer help and hope regardless of race and religion to charitable organisations. The Cradle of Hope, atthe House of Restoration, in West Krugersdorp accommodates 19 vulnerable and abused mothers with their children, as wellas young teenage girls. The mothers are helped to get back on their feet so that after a few months they are in a position tomove out of the home and return to society to look after themselves and their children. Kagiso is a severely impoverishedcrèche that houses 200 children daily and are assisted by The Cradle of Hope with food, clothing and other basic needs. Thiscentre’s outreach programme currently assists 476 children by providing them with a daily meal.

ThandananiPhuthanang Safe Home and Soup KitchenNPO number: 055-043Location: VosloorusContact number : 011 906 3386/073 927 0809

Phuthanang Safe Home and Soup Kitchen is a non-profit organisation situated in Vosloorus. It assists 50 orphans andvulnerable children many of whom are affected and/or infected with HIV/AIDS. The children receive a morning and afternoonmeal from Mondays to Fridays. Phuthanang also provides a soup kitchen at clinics providing breakfast and lunch to TB andHIV/AIDS patients who would otherwise take their medication on an empty stomach. The NCCF is going to provide additionalkitchen appliances to this safe home as their current situation does not allow them to prepare all the meals required. TheFoundation is also going to do roof and electrical repairs to their kitchen.

Thuthuzela, established in 2005, is an orphanage situated in Marlboro in anoffice building. It cares for children who are abandoned, neglected, abused andHIV infected. The home also runs a daycare centre for 45 children, aged 6months to 6 years from financially disadvantaged families. These children receivebreakfast, lunch and snacks and a basic foundation in education. The orphanageaccommodates 16 children, aged 5 – 11 years who attend local schools and areclothed and cared for in a loving environment.

This organisation was established in 2003 and is based in Ivory Park. It cares for 346 orphans and vulnerable children aged 2– 18 years. These children do not pay for their care and so Thuthukani depends on business for its support. Besides daycare,it offers aftercare for school going children which includes a meal, assistance with school homework, and activities such as art,sport, drama and dance. Many of these children are cared for by their siblings in child headed households.

This is a residential home that was established in 1997 in Diepsloot. The home houses 29children aged 1 – 18 years. There are also 15 babies and toddlers who use the daycarefacilities of Deflire and receive meals as well as some stimulation. Most of the children fallinto the category of abused, HIV infected and affected, neglected and abandoned. On adaily basis, the children are provided with breakfast and dinner, they are assisted withschool homework and are mentored.

This centre has made great strides since its opening on 4th January 2011 with the current admission being 77 children aged3 months to 6 years. This pre-school has 3 classes and is based in a township area surrounded by primary schools wheremost of those pupils live in nearby squatter camps. Recognizing the plight of these children, Tholulwazi in addition to runningtheir re-school, also runs a breakfast and soup kitchen to help these learners from Waterwax and Tsutsumani. The centrereceived mattresses for the children as well as groceries and educational equipment, with ongoing support assured.

The Last Hope Organisation

Thembelenkosini is a non-governmental organisation based in Senoane, Soweto that provides food, after-school tutoring, artsand crafts and a safe space for 105 children throughout their community. The children are identified by local schools andreferred to the centre where they are provided with the opportunity to learn, grow and play. The children receive a healthy latelunch daily. The centre boasts a renovated library where the children can read and study in a safe, learner-friendlyenvironment. The centre, which opened its doors in February 2009, is a registered SARS PBO concern.

Thusanang has eight active programmes focused on the care of orphaned and vulnerablechildren, skills development, poverty alleviation, support groups, education and awarenessaround HIV/AIDS, home based care, entertainment and social work services. Over 476orphaned and other vulnerable children receive cooked meals daily and are assisted withtheir school work. The organisation is registered with the Department of SocialDevelopment to ensure effective service delivery and the establishment of acomprehensive HIV/AIDS programme.

The founding of Tintswalo in 1999 came about through the desperate need for education and daycare in the local community.This centre which is situated in Lombardy Glen cares for 22 children, from birth to 5 years, however, a waiting list for 2012for 65 new entrants is posing a challenge to this small facility. The centre concentrates on early childhood development andthen rudimentary education from 2 years. 14 children are also assisted with after-school feeding as well as help with home-work. The daycare children receive meals and are stimulated with educational toys and equipment. Additions and alterations,particularly to unsafe electrical connections, the extension of the garage with its conversion into a warm and inviting playroomwith cupboards and proper lighting, the addition of a covered patio, a new roof as well as two toilets will be done by the NCCF.

Badanisile is a non-governmental organisation located in Minanawe, Daveyton. Ithouses 45 orphans, abused and abandoned children. The children are providedwith food, shelter and a safe place to live. The property in which the children arehoused is in a bad state of repair, but being a disused municipal building, the NCCFis battling to gain ownership of it for Badanisile in order to carry out renovations.The orphanage opened in March 2010. The NCCF is going to better equip theBadanisile kitchen by purchasing a number of appliances.

Simamisa Orphan’s Care was established in 2005 as a cluster of galvanized steel huts to house orphaned, abused andabandoned children. Today they have a brand new home which unfortunately, while being beautifully tiled, spacious and brightlypainted, is an empty shell. The NCCF will have its builder fit a kitchen, cupboards in the bedrooms, and The NCCF will providebunk beds and mattresses for the 15 children currently residing in the home. The Foundation will further provide additionalkitchen appliances, crockery and cutlery, not only for the little residents, but for the 35 children attending the daily pre-school.Simamisa will then be able to ensure that they can provide food, shelter and a safe home for the 55 children in their care.

Villa of Hope Children’s Home houses 56 children who have been either been orphaned or require alternative care due toabuse, neglect, abandonment. The home also houses children that are affected or infected by HIV and AIDS or other illcircumstances live. The vision of this organisation is to reduce child abuse and neglect within their surrounding communities bypromoting family values. Children are aged between 1 and 16 years old.

This preschool was established in 1997 and offers an integrated Montessori inspirededucational programme. The school has 3 classes providing for 80 children aged 3 –6 years. Zakheni believes in the development of life skills and the general building ofpositive self-image in these mostly disadvantaged children. They place great emphasison mathematics and science and assist their pupils in becoming responsible,independent learners by the time they enter primary school. The centre also has agroup of women who are baking and selling cakes. The NCCF recently donatedmattresses for all the children as well as groceries and education equipment.

Ubuhle Bezwe is an organisation that looks after children living with HIV/AIDS, youngstersliving on the streets and orphaned children with ages ranging from birth to 18 years. Thecentre not only provides food, clothes, education and counselling but also housing for just over45 children. After seeing children suffer in and around her community Barbara (the home’sadministrator) took it upon herself to make a difference. She aims to provide basic life skills,develop confidence, and boost self-esteem. This home was renovated in a joint initiative by theNCCF and Sasfin with the addition of a boys and girls dormitory, an ablution block and newkitchen.
