MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN OF THE LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

The World Hydrogen Energy Conference – WHEC – is a mature event that may effectively contribute to unveil ongoing research work and to stimulate the production of hydrogen and its use as an energy vector in a broad region. That is why the opportunity of holding the 22nd WHEC in Brazil will emphasize the clean hydrogen energy approach in the whole Latin America subcontinent, from Mexico to Argentina. Several factors will positively contribute to this approach such as the rich technical and scientific information that will be gathered under the influence of the overwhelming progress already made in this area by several countries from the northern hemisphere in the last decades. Also, the awesome contribution given by Latin America on the use of renewable energy lately will play an important role. The important share of the clean production of electric energy using hydraulic power plants in several of our countries, the potential it presents for lower cost hydrogen production and the intensive utilization of bio-ethanol in Brazil are complementary examples.

The financial investment on research and innovation in Brazil has progressively increased in magnitude in the last decade and it gives clear demonstration that it will present a significant growth rate on the years to come. In addition to that, most of the innovation projects are co-financed by a governmental agency and private/public companies. This will facilitate to enroll companies in the WHEC 2018 effort.

Considering the very positive world influence of the International Association of Hydrogen Energy, the additional efforts made in this area by the International Energy Agency and by the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, the strong reputation of the WHECs, the growing public interest on environment friendly energy activities and the special attraction the Marvelous City of Rio de Janeiro exerts, there are very good prospects for an important professional and public participation at the 22nd WHEC.

The document that follows contains the overall plans conceived and the management structure for the 22nd WHEC organization, with emphasis on the forecasted budget, funding sources and the action plan from now up to 2018.

The 22nd WHEC is still several years distant from now and new professional interests might appear in the course of these years. However, it is already possible to list today´s themes that will probably keep local interest in 2018, among others, such as:

The use of water electrolysis as an important means of hydrogen production;

Production of hydrogen by the gasification or biodigestion of biomasses;

Distributed generation of electricity with fuel cells;

Hydrogen fueled power trains in large vehicles, such as buses, trucks, boats, ships and trains;

The complementary use of hydrogen energy and renewable energies.

The most significant part of the 22nd WHEC income will be obtained through the registration revenues, so a heavy promotion will be made via partnerships with associations, contacts with companies and governments of countries in the region.

The income from exhibition and sponsorship will also represent a significant share of the overall congress revenues. That is why building strong relationships with sponsors and exhibitors will be essential. The local organizing committee will seek to attract sponsors, analyze their needs and create tailored and value-driven sponsorship packages. Managing and nurturing these relationships will help the 22nd WHEC organizing committee to build strong, mutually beneficial, long term partnerships.

Exhibition and sponsorship at the congresses will also be a powerful form of marketing, providing significant opportunities to drive sales. Establishment of correct partnerships will help heighten visibility, create positive publicity and help the 22nd WHEC to differentiate from the competition. It will broaden competitive advantage, bring credibility and allow direct targeting of our message towards the specific audience that interests us.

Other forms of funding will come from Brazilian Governmental Agencies and Banks, such as CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Level Personnel), Finep (Funding Authority for Studies and Projects), BNDES (Brazilian Development Bank) and the state financed foundations that support research, development and innovation. These agencies and banks traditionally support international conferences and scientific projects in Brazil.
