At Baker, quality is not just a verbalization, but an allinclusive attitude that entails quality people, equipment, technology, and services which result in a qualityproduct. The Quality Assurance Group maintains the supportnecessary to perpetuate the attitude that quality counts. The basis for the success of this quality challenge is theSafety Systems Quality Program. The quality program providesfor the verification of conformanceto the requirements specified inapplicable codes, standards andspecifications such as ASME,ASTM, API, ASNT, ISO, ANSI,NACE, military standards andunique specific customerrequirements. In-house quality control com-mences with the documented train-ing of Baker personnel and thereview and control of the processesfor purchasing manufacturing useitems and raw material. Suppliersare regulated via supplier audit, avendor partnership program, andsupplier trend analysis. These con-trol functions include, receiving in-spection, chemical and mechani-cal property testing, on-line in-pro-cess inspection, hardness and non-destructive testing and evaluation, final mechanical inspection, statis-tical process controls, assemblyinspection, functional testing and final evaluation as theproduct is boxed and prepared for shipment. Complementing these control functions are the Bakeridentification, control and traceability program, and theprogram for control of measuring and testing equipment. The traceability program assures the components arecontrolled so the history of all operations is recordedstarting with the original composition of the raw material,

the manufacturing processes, shipment and final destina-tion. Components may be traced forward from origin todestination or destination back to origin including SafetySystems Service Center activity. To maintain product quality to Baker standards, eachfacility has precise control on all measuring and testingequipment used for manufacturing and product accep-

tance. All measuring and testingequipment is regularly calibratedto standards directly traceable tonational standards. All phases of the quality pro-gram are continuously monitoredby the Quality Assurance Organi-zation, which is responsible forperforming internal audits of eachactivity within the facility. The au-dits are conducted by personneltrained, qualified, and certified toperform audit activities. The successful implementationof the Baker Oil Tools Safety Qual-ity Program is reaffirmed by an-nual on-site evaluation by theAmerican Society of MechanicalEngineers, the American Petro-leum Institute, the InternationalStandards Organization, and in-dependent certifying agencies rep-resenting Bakers customers. Theeffectiveness of the program imple-mentation is attested to by the is-suance of Certificates of Accredi-

tation to use the official monogram (OCS) of the AmericanSociety of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the AmericanPetroleum Institute (APE-6A, API-14A, API-14D) andCertificate of Conformance issued by Det Norske Veritasfor the International Standards Organization (ISO 9001). Service Category Material Description CO2 Range *Standard Service Material for non-corrosive environments or environments containing small 0 - 7 psi(Non-corrosive Sweet Crude or Gas) amounts of H2S within specified limits as defined in the Nace Standard MR-01-75.H2S Service (Often combined with standard service) Materials meet Nace Standard MR-01-75 0 - 7 psi(Hydrogen Sulfide) requirement for metals subjected to hydrogen sulfide environments.H2S and Mild CO2 Service Materials in flowpath have 9% minimum chrome content to minimize weight loss 0 - 30 psi(Hydrogen Sulfide and Trace of Carbon Dioxide due to CO2 attack. Parts not in the flow path may use alloy steels. (Tubing Retrievable)H2S and CO2 Service Materials throughout have 9% minimum chrome content for protection 7+ psi (Wireline)(Hydrogen Sulfide and Carbon Dioxide) against H2S and CO2 attack. 30+ psi (Tubing Retrievable)Special Corrosive Service For environments involving free chlorides, inhibitors, excessive temperatures, etc..., the Marketing Group in(salts, inhibitors, etc.) Broken Arrow should be consulted.

SUBSURFACE SAFETY VALVE MANUFACTURING MATERIALS FOR SERVICE ENVIRONMENTS

    * Selection of service categories depends on the partial pressure of the CO2 (%CO2 times the total well pressure divided by 100). Example: Ensures 3000 psi shut-in pressure and 5% CO2 (MOL.%). The partial CO2 pressure is: 5% x 300 psi = 150 psi. In this instance, the partial CO2 pressure is greater than 30 psi. Therefore an H2S and CO2 service valve would be recommended. 100%

THE BAKER OIL TOOLSULTRA STRONG FLAPPERThe one thing that counts in the opera-tional and safety control of any well is theperformance of the safety valves clo-sure mechanism. For sound reliability,Baker Oil Tools' Safety Systems hasdeveloped the most rugged, depend-able flapper closure mechanisms in theindustry the Dual-Hinge Wedge-Shaped Flapper System.

FEATURES/BENEFITS Heavy duty hinge pin and torsion spring Valves open under 100 psi differential

pressure without damage due to le-verage gained by moving the initialcontact point with flow tube away fromthe hinge

Three point contact wedge shape mini-mizes loading on the hinge and hingepin

Strenuous prototype testing with ve-locity gas, slam tests at flow rates aminimum of 10 times those proposedby API

During slam closure, the flow tubehydraulically absorbs the shock, notthe valve seat

Flapper swings completely out of flowpath and the flow tube protects theflapper and the seat, preventing dam-age by wireline tools and producedfluids or contaminates

Every flapper system includes a tor-sion spring which returns the flapperto full closed, sealing position withoutthe assistance of well pressure

THRU-THE-FLAPPERSELF-EQUALIZINGSYSTEM (PATENTED)This system, when activated, allows shut-in pressure from below the safety valveto be vented to the tubing above. Thisdecreases the differential pressureacross the flapper sufficiently to allowthe safety valve to open.

In the oil tools industry, two equaliz-ing systems have predominated, anAround-The-Flapper System and a Thru-The-Flapper System. Extensive researchand development lead to Bakers pat-ented Thru-The-Flapper design. Thesystem consists of an equalizing plunger,an equalizing spring, and an equalizingtype flapper.

    FEATURES/BENEFITS Patented Thru-The-Flapper Self-

Equalizing System keeps productionfluids and solids inside the flow tube

No contaminates introduced to theoperating mechanism as with Around-The-Flapper Systems

Fewer leak paths than Around-The-Flapper Systems

Simple non-operating opening proce-dures pressure to full opening pres-sure for single stage opening

Interchangeability only a change offlapper is required to convert to a self-equalizing valve no additional valvelength is required

100% metal-to-metal seal is not af-fected by unloading under differentialpressure

Operating mechanism not in flow path;therefore, not subject to sticking prob-lems due to sand and debris or erosionduring production

Equalizing feature is through the cen-ter of the valve and does not interferewith valve operations control linepressure staging is not required

Equalizing feature returns to the closedposition when the valve is fully open

The flow tube depresses the plunger to openan equalizing path prior to the valve opening.

When the valve is closed, the equalizingmechanism's port is protected from contaminates.

During slam close, the flow tubehydraulically absorbs the shock not the valve seat.

Almost closed 3 pointshock absorption by

    flow tube.

Flapper swings completely out of flow path, protecting flapper and seat from wireline tooldamage. Equalizing feature returns to closed

position when valve is fully open.

Baker Oil Tools first brought to the oil industry the FV-Series Safety Valvesand continues to offer this line to meet special customer requirements;however, advances in safety valve design has led Baker to offer the newT-Series Safety Valves. This new design brings the next level oftechnological and manufacturing enhancements to the safety valve market.

T-SERIES NON-ELASTOMERIC TUBINGRETRIEVABLE SAFETY VALVESPREMIUM FEATURES IN A STANDARDLINE SAFETY VALVEThe T-Series Tubing Retrievable Safety Valves bring the advantages ofnon-elastomeric sealing technology to standard operating environments. Now, the same field-proven features that ensure high performance andextended life in premium applications are also available for lower-endapplications.

Premium two-step, metal-to-metal housing connections and a thermo-plastic dynamic sealing system eliminate all elastomeric seals and thusgreatly increase the valves service life. In addition to non-elastomerictechnology, the T-Series incorporates a number of other features fromsuccessful high temperature/high pressure safety valves. Among these arethe patented Dual-Hinge Wedge-Shaped Flapper Closure Mechanism, andan optional patented Through-The-Flapper Self-Equalizing System.

These features, combined with a unique control fluid communicationsystem that eliminates the possibility of premature actuation, make the T-Series the most rugged, reliable, and fail-safe surface controlled, subsur-face safety valves available for standard service.

ULTRA-STRONG CLOSURE MECHANISMThe T-Series Safety Valves, like all Baker Oil Tools conventional tubing-and wireline retrievable safety valves, use a flapper closure mechanism thathas proven to be practically indestructible. The heart of this mechanism isthe most rugged flapper on the market. It is thicker than those of comparablevalves and is wedge-shaped rather than flat to minimize loading on the hingeand flapper pin. A unique hinge design virtually eliminates flapper pinbending. Each valve is tested to withstand slam opens against differentialpressure at full rated control chamber pressure with no damage to theflapper, hinge, or flapper pin.

PREVENTS PREMATURE ACTUATION OFCOMMUNICATION SYSTEMPremature actuation of the control fluid communication system is the primarycause of safety valve failures. T-Series valves incorporate a revolutionarycommunication system that eliminates the possibility of accidental actuationwhile running wireline tools through the valve.

The radial communication systems design removes the mechanism fromthe valve and puts it in the wireline tool. The T-Series valve has a smoothID, free of sleeves or other devices which move linearly and can hang upwireline tools. Communication is achieved by radial motion of a one-trip, jar-down, wireline tool. No linear motion means no chance of inadvertentactivation by other tools.

BAKER PROTOTYPE TESTING:THE MOST STRENUOUS ANDCOMPREHENSIVE IN THEINDUSTRYBaker safety valves face their toughest testbefore they ever reach the field. That isbecause Baker Oil Tools performs the moststrenuous, comprehensive prototype safetyvalve testing in the industry. We subjectclosure mechanisms to high-velocity gas slamtests at flow rates up to ten times thoserequired by API, to prove they will withstandeven the most severe flow conditions. Addi-tional tests include slam open, endurancetesting simulating over 140 years of service, high temperature tests, and sand slurry flowtests. Only after demonstrating its rugged-ness and durability in this test program wasthe T-5 approved for field use. Bakersrigorous testing program helps assure opera-tors that their safety valves will perform asintended.

CONTROL PRESSURE PENETRATORCOMMUNICATION TOOLProduct No. 822-81The Control Pressure Penetrator Communication Tool is de-signed to establish control line communication to the tubingthrough the ID of a tubing retrievable safety valve or landing nipple.Communication is achieved by radial motion of this one-trip, jar-down, wireline tool which punctures a hole in the communicationarea of the tubing retrievable equipment. By removing thecommunication mechanism (typically linear motion sleeves) fromthe tubing retrievable equipment, this unique system eliminatesthe possibilty of accidental actuation while running wireline tools.

FLAPPER LOCK-OPEN TOOLProduct No. 822-80The Flapper Lock-Open Tool is designed to deposit an expandingsleeve into the flapper section of the valve to permanently retainit in the open position. The tool is run on wireline and locked inplace in the nipple adapter of the valve. Withdrawal of the wirelinerunning tool actuates the Flapper Lock-Open Tool. The tool isdesigned such that the expanding sleeve cannot be released intothe flapper section if the flow tube is in the open position.

MODEL K SEPARATION SLEEVEProduct No. 820-04The Model K Separation Sleeve is a wireline retrievable tool usedto blank-off the hydraulic chamber in a locked open tubing retriev-able safety valve to prevent contamination of the control mediumwith well fluids. The separation sleeve is recommended when atubing retrievable valve is permanently locked-open and produc-tion is scheduled to continue without an operable safety valve. Aseparation sleeve is also recommended when pulling the stringwith a locked open safety valve.

When a lock is assembled to the separation sleeve, the modeldesignation is expanded to include the lock model and the firstletter of the safety valve model designation. Example: A modelTAFK Separation Sleeve is a Model K Separation Sleeveassembled to an AF Lock to be landed in a T-Series SafetyValve.

T-SERIES BACKUP VALVE SYSTEMWIRELINE RETRIEVABLEINSERT SAFETY VALVESProduct Nos. 820-40, 822-40 (V),820-91, 822-91 (VD)The V-Series Wireline Retrievable Insert Safety Valves, at-tached to safety valve locks, are designed to be run and set in apermanently locked open T-Series Tubing Safety Valve. Theinsert valve straddles the tubing retrievable valve from top tobottom and uses the same control line that previously operated thetubing retrievable safety valve.

For T-Series Safety Valves located in the tubing at less than1000 ft deep, the Model V should be the backup valve. For T-Series Safety Valves set deeper than 1000 ft, the Model VDshould be the backup valve.

Both models are available with Bakers patented Thru-The-Flapper Self-Equalizing System.

Both models are also adaptable to competitor locks. Fordetailed information on Models V and VD Wireline RetrievableSafety Valves, please refer to that section of this catalog (pages 18and 19).

When V or VD Insert Safety Valves are assembled to asafety valve lock, the model designation is expanded to include thelock model and the first letter of the tubing retrievable safety valvemodel designation. Example: A Model TAFVE Insert SafetyValve is a Model VE Insert Safety Valve assembled to a ModelAF Lock to be landed in a permanently locked open T-SeriesTubing Retrievable Safety Valve.

Model X Prongs are used to hold the wireline insert safetyvalve in the open position during run-in. The X Prong is attachedto the running shank or probe and extended to the flapper of theinsert valve. When ordering, specify the lock model designation toensure compatibility.

Model G Separa-tion Sleeves are recommended whenrunning the production string to isolatetubing pressure from the control line. This allows pressurization of the controlline indepenent of the tubing pressure.

The G Separation Sleeves may alsobe used when flowing the well or pullingthe production string without an oper-able safety valve in the safety valvenipple or in a situation where it is desir-able to prevent contamination of the con-trol medium with tubing fluids.

When a G Separation Sleeve isassembled to a lock, the model designa-tion is expanded to include the lock modeland the safety valve nipple into which itis run.

MODEL J-3 AND J-4 WIRELINE RETRIEVABLE INJECTION VALVESProduct No. 808-40 and 808-89The Model J-3 and J-4 Injection Valves are normally closed valves that are designed to automati-cally shut-in the tubing in the event injection is stopped or flow reverses. Injection pressure opens thevalve by creating a pressure drop across the orifice that allows the spring guide to push past the flapperto the open position. When injection ceases, the spring guide allows the flapper to close. The J-3 andJ-4 Injection Valve Sub Assemblies are compatible with any of Bakers wireline locks.

MODEL A-3 AND A-4 WIRELINE RETRIEVABLEVELOCITY SAFETY VALVESProduct No. 808-44 and 808-47The Models A-3 and A-4 Safety Valves are normally open-type valves that are closed by well flowin excess of the valves preset closure flow rate. If loss of normal well control occurs at the surface, anyincrease in flow velocity causes the valve to close, thus shutting in the well downhole. The valve willre-open once pressures across the closed pressure are equalized. The A-3 and A-4 have anequalizing sub-assembly which permits self-equalizing prior to retrieving the valve, and are compatiblewith any of Bakers wireline locks.

Adjustment of the valve closure mechanism is accomplished by changing the orifice size andinternal spring rate. This requires specific well information and is accomplished through the use ofBakers computer program designed for this purpose. Please consult your Baker representative forexact information required.

ANNULUS CONTROL SAFETY VALVESAnnulus Control Safety Valves are control line actuated valves which attach directly to the top of the Twin-Seal Submersible Pump Packer, Product No. 785-40. Both valves are used to control the flow of annulus gasacross the Twin-Seal packer. Applications include venting for submersible pump completions or injecting forgas injection completions. Loss of control line pressure results in closure of both valve models, thus they arefail-safe closed. Both valves will withstand 5000 psi burst.

MODEL VR VENT SAFETY VALVEProduct No. 820-90The Model VR Vent Safety Valve is a normally closed valve which is opened by the application of controlline pressure (1500 psi plus shut-in pressure) and has a rated working pressure of 2500 psi. Control chambertest pressure is 10,000 psi. Fail-safe setting depth is 1300 ft with hydraulic fluid in the control line.

An optional feature of the VR is activation of a recirculation port in the twin-seal packer. Upon loss ofcontrol line pressure this feature allows pumped fluid to be recirculated from tubing to annulus below thepacker.

Application of pressure to the annulus above the Twin-Seal Packer will open the VR valve. If necessary, this feature can be used to kill the well.

MODEL AGV (ANNULUS GAS VENT) VALVEProduct No. 995-03The Model AGV (Annulus Gas Vent) Valve is a normally closed valve which is opened by the applicationof control line pressure (1500 psi plus shut-in pressure) and has a rated working pressure of 2500 psi. Controlchamber test pressure is 10,000 psi. Fail-safe setting depth is 1600 ft with hydraulic fluid in the control line.

The AGV differs from the VR in that the AGV major OD is smaller than the VR for limited driftapplications.

Model AVLDM Annular Safety ValveProduct No. 734-94

MODEL AVLDM ANNULAR SAFETY VALVEProduct No. 734-94The Model AVLDM is a tubing retrievable, surface controlled, subsurface annularsafety valve. The surface control is via a small diameter control line connecting thesafety valve to the emergency shut-down system. Since the valve is of the normallyclosed type, the valve automatically returns to the closed (fail-safe) position, thusshutting in the annulus.

The Model AVLDM Annular Safety Valve, when used in conjunction with theModel FLX Pack-Off Tubing Hanger, provides a secondary barrier to annular flowand a means to control the flow of fluids from the lower annulus to the upper annulusor dedicated injection line. Primary applications include gas lift installations and wellswhere pressurization of the upper casing annulus as a result of a downhole leak is notpermissible.

FEATURES/BENEFITS Field proven metal-to-metal seal tech-

nology Large annular flow area minimizes

pressure drop to enhance gas lift op-erations

High tensile rating does not compro-mise tubing rating

Simple operating procedures ID compatible with tubing, allowing no
