PurposeThese texts have been developed to help centres gather evidence which they might use as a basis for estimating how candidates might perform in the external course assessment of Reading and Translation. The evidence generated may also be retained as evidence in the case of an appeal being submitted for candidates.

Centres may wish to use these texts to round off the work on a particular theme or as part of a Prelim exam. These texts approximate in terms of length and difficulty to what might be expected in the end of course assessment and would normally be administered to candidates who have already achieved the unit award for Reading as a result of a successful performance in reading a text chosen from the National Assessment Bank.

Marking instructionsThe marking scheme for each text has been developed in line with the guidance given to setters of the end of course assessment. The comprehension of the text is assessed by questions in English which total 20 points and translation is assessed by the selection of five sense units which are worth in total 10 points.

Reading comprehensionEach marking scheme contains the points of detail which candidates may be likely to elicit from the texts in response to questions set.

As these are tests of comprehension it is important to read a candidate’s entire answer to any question in order to determine whether or not comprehension has been demonstrated.

The marking scheme indicates the details required from a candidate but does not specify any particular form of words that the candidate must use. The use of brackets indicates information which is desirable but not essential for the point to be awarded. The use of an oblique sign (/) indicates an alternative way of achieving the point. Centres should annotate the marking scheme with other correct wordings of answers they are willing to accept.


Credit should not be given if a candidate has elicited some information which may be factually correct but which is used inappropriately or presented in such a confusing manner as to leave the reader in doubt as to whether comprehension has been demonstrated.

A candidate should not be penalised for wrong information given. However if the wrong information contradicts correct information which the candidate has given, then the candidate should lose the marks awarded for the correct information.

This might be demonstrated in the marking by a tick with a cross through it.

TranslationEach sense unit is to be awarded a mark from the range 0 / 1 / 2 in accordance with the following categories:

Good 2 Essential informaiton and relevant details are understood and conveyed clearly and accurately, with appropriate use of English.

Satisfactory 1 Essential information is understood and conveyed clearly and comprehensibly, although some of the details may be translated in an imprecise or inaccurate manner. The key message is conveyed in spite of inaccuracies and weaknesses in the use of English.

Unsatisfactory 0 The candidate fails to demonstrate sufficient understanding of the essential information and relevant details. Errors may include mistranslation and/or the failure to translate relevant details.

Centres should annotate their marking scheme with versions which they are willing / unwilling to accept.

La première fois que j’ai vu Claudine, j’ai pensé qu’elle était laide. Et bête. Comment pouvais-je savoir qu’elle était simplement perdue?

Et pourtant, j'aurais dû le savoir. Le parloir de la paroisse était rempli d’enfants perdus; une bonne soixantaine. Petits paquets de malheur dont 1’étiquette marron, nouée autour du cou, indiquait le nom et 1’adresse. Emballés dans leurs plus beaux manteaux, bien trop chaud pour le soleil de mai, ils transportaient tout ce qu’ils possédaient dans de petites valises, de grands sacs ou des cartons. II y en avait peu qui pleuraient car il faut de 1’énergie pour pleurer. Ils ne faisaient pas de bruit. Ils étaient simplement assis là, côte à côte, sur toutes les tables, tous les rebords de fenêtre, comme des petits colis attendant d’être ramassés.

Nous essayions d'être gentils, de parler doucement, de sourire à chacun. Mais nous aussi, nous avions chaud et nous étions fatigués. C’était le troisième arrivage de la joumée. Ce matin-1à, j’étais très en retard pour aller à 1'école, et j’avais grand-peur d’être grondé, d’autant que M. Hamel nous avait dit qu’il nous interrogerait sur les participes, et je n’en savais pas le premier mot. Un moment 1’idée me vint de manquer la classe et de prendre ma course à travers champs.

Le temps était si chaud, si clair!

On entendait les merles siffler à la lisière du bois, et dans le pré Rippert, derrière la scierie, les Prussiens qui faisaient 1’exercice. Tout cela me tentait bien plus que la règle des participes; mais j’eus la force de résister, et je courus bien vite vers 1’école.

En passant devant la mairie, je vis qu’il y avait du monde arrêté près du petit grillage aux affiches. Depuis deux ans, c’est de là que nous sont venues toutes les mauvaises nouvelles, les batailles perdues, les réquisitions, les ordres de la commandature; et je pensai sans m’arrêter;

“Qu’est-ce qu'il y a encore? “

Alors, comme je traversais la place en courant, le forgeron Wachter, qui était là avec son apprenti en train de lire 1’affiche, me cria:

Ne te dépêche pas tant, petit; tu y arriveras toujours assez tôt à ton école!

Je crus qu’il se moquait de moi, et j’entrai tout essoufflé dans la petite cour de M. Hainel.

D’ordinaire, au commencement de la classe, il se faisait un grand tapage qu’on entendait jusque dans la rue, les pupitres ouverts, fermés, les leçons qu’on répétait très haut tous ensemble en se bouchant les oreilles pour mieux apprendre, et la grosse règle du maître qui tapait sur les tables:

Un peu de silence! ,Je comptais sur tout ce train pour gagner mon banc sans être vu; mais, justement, ce jour-là, tout était tranquille, comme un matin de dimanche. Alors seulement, un peu remis de ma frayeur, je remarquai que notre maître avait sa belle redingote verte, son jabot plissé fin et la calotte de soie noire brodée qu’il ne mettait que les jours d’inspection ou de distribution de prix. Du reste, toute la classe avait quelque chose


d’extraordinaire et de solennel. Mais ce qui me surprit le plus, ce fut de voir au fond de la salle, sur les bancs qui restaient vides d’habitude, des gens du village assis et silencieux comme nous, le vieux Hauser avec son tricorne, 1’ancien maire, 1’ancien facteur, et puis d’autres personnes encore.Tout ce monde-là paraissait triste; et Hauser avait apporté un vieil abécédaire mangé aux bords qu’il tenait grand ouvert sur ses genoux, avec ses grosses lunettes posées en travers des pages.Pendant que je m’étonnais de tout cela, M. Hamel était monté dans sa chaire, et de la même voix douce et grave dont il m’avait reçu, il nous dit:Mes enfants, c’est la demière fois que je vous fais la classe.
