Principal’s Corner

It is hard to believe that we only have a few more weeks of school until the children will be

leaving us for the summer. We still have plenty of learning planned for them and lots of

opportunities for family involvement as well. One very exciting development is the addition of a

Gaga Ball Pit to our playground. Thanks to a generous donation from NIPSCO and great

participation during our school fundraiser this year, we were able to make this purchase and add

another option for the children during recess. Thank you for your support!

We began ILEARN testing on April 23 and appreciate the children in grades 3, 4, and 5 coming

well-rested and ready to show what they know on the assessment. The bulk of testing will

conclude on May 15. This year’s statewide assessment is both computer adaptive and untimed

and the children are working very hard and seemed more relaxed as they work through the prob-

lems. Results are expected late this summer as the scores for passing need to be determined.

May brings with it several family events. The PTA Carnival will be held Friday, May 10 from 5:00

PM to 7:00 PM. There will be Bounce Houses, a Dunk Tank, games, food, prizes and much more.

Please contact us if you would like to volunteer to help out with the carnival. On May 9, the stu-

dents in Grades K and 1 will be presenting their music program at 1:30 and on May 21 at 7:05 PM

is the Tin Caps Game that is the culmination of our spring reading program. On Thursday, May 30

at 1:00 we will celebrate the successes of our Fifth Graders, and on Friday, May 31, we will have

our Pre-K celebration at 1:00. We hope to see you at one or more of these events.

We have four more weeks of school and we appreciate your partnership. Please continue to

encourage your child to read nightly, to practice math skills regularly, and to be respectful at all

times. We have so many exciting experiences planned for the remainder of the year and we

hope everyone will be able to enjoy them. Unfortunately, poor behavior can sometimes elimi-

nate a child from being able to participate in things like Field Day, assemblies, field trips, etc. We

thank you for expecting the best from your children and for supporting our mission!

Notes from the Nurse

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month! Mental health affects all of us each day. Here is an activity you can try at the dinner

table, in the car, waiting in line at the grocery, or anywhere else you have a few minutes with your child.

Ask your child: What was your favorite part of you day? Why? What was your least favorite part of the day? Why? Did anything made you feel scared or sad today? Is there anything else you want to talk to me about? Keeping an open line of communication is important to start at a young age with your child. Having them talk about their feelings,

whether it is good or bad, is important to keep them “mentally healthy”.

Classroom News

Kindergarten: As the end of the school year approaches, Kindergarten will be learning about and researching an animal of their choice. We are also going to be learning about measuring time and using graphs to sort data in math.

Grade 1: First Grade is preparing for the end of year testing! They are excited to show you what they've been working on! Make sure to ask them about what they've read to you each night.

Grade 2: During this last month of school our second graders are trying to get ready for 3rd grade by practicing our reading fluency. We are studying different careers right now in reading, so we can start thinking about what we want to do when we grow up. We are also excited because in science our caterpillars have turned into a chrysalis and we are anxiously awaiting for our butterflies to come out.

Grade 3: Third graders will work with partners to create a digital presentation about jobs that help others in the community. Students will also write a persuasive essay explaining why they would or wouldn’t like to have a particular career as an adult with at least three reasons to support their opinion. We will be revisiting critical math skills from this year, as well as previewing skills students will need for fourth grade.

Grade 4: As we enter the last month of the year, fourth grade will focus on ILEARN testing, DIBELS assessments, and the Indianapolis 500.

Grade 5: The fifth grade team is working on multiplying and dividing decimals. We are also focusing on multimedia presentations in English/Language Arts. Our final field trip of the year will be May 23, 2019, when we travel to Fishers, Indiana to tour Conner Prairie. We are thankful to the PTA for helping us fund this trip for our students.

Mrs. Arkkelin: We have enjoyed having a guest teacher in our room, Miss Savage. She has been very helpful and we will miss her when she leaves. We are also currently keeping a very close watch on our Caterpillars as they turn into Butterflies. We were able to watch a caterpillar turn into a Chrysalis yesterday.

Mrs. Shelby: Our class is working on ILEARN assessments, DIBELS practice, and our Science unit is Electricity. Our students continue to work on listening and following directions.

Did you know? Good attendance means being in

school 95% of the time… Or having no more than 8 days off! More time in school

means more time to learn, develop,

and grow!

Counseling Connection

Nowadays, there are so many negative messages our children hear—advertisements telling them they are not

beautiful enough or tough enough. There is pressure to grow up and be mature, but also be a kid. The messages

our world sends can be very confusing. Thus, it is our job to teach our children how to feel good about themselves

despite media and societal expectations. One way to do this is to teach about Positive Self-Talk, which is a tool for

increasing self-confidence. A great book for children is “Stand Tall” by Molly Lou Melon.

Other things you can do at home:

Ask your child about the

positive things they did

throughout the day .

Have your child write

positive statements on the

bathroom mirror (dry erase

markers work great).

Talk positively about

yourself. Modeling this

behavior is the best way

to teach children.
