As the life of a college student, there have been many encounters with my three favorite items we love to consume: alcohol, fast foods, and the occasional dose of Vitamin C. (In the form of trash can punch, of course.) But do we realize exactly how much of this we consume, and in fact how bad it is for you?

Let me break it down for you. You go out at least once a week, if not, two or three times. You have about fi ve beers when you’re out, among many shots. On your way home, you stop at a typical fast food place with friends and munch out. Have you counted the calories yet? With all of that, you’ve had 550 calories with beer alone, 56 calories each shot of Vodka, and about 600 in that juicy burger on your way home. (Without fries and a soda.) How does that sound?

Th at’s exactly what our hottie on the cover gives up secrets to. Donovan Marshall is proof that healthy is sexy, so get on board! Read on his new way of life and healthy living. He has some great tips!

You Asked... Study Breaks Staff answers your burning questions.

Julie, What are good low-impact workouts that still work?

-Isa D’Aniell

Can low impact workouts help you burn calories and lose weight as well as high impact moves? Absolutely! Despite what some people may say, low-impact  exercises can get your heart rate into your target heart rate zone. You just have to work a little harder. Yoga, pilates, spin-ning, walking and swimming are a few of the popular ones.

Alex, What is the best new diet worth trying?

-Amber Lankford

Honestly, I don’t believe in diets. Th ey are destined for failure. You starve yourself for a week or a month and then end up gaining the weight back. Each result depends on the individual. A “diet” needs to become your lifestyle. In my experience, eating things you like but in smaller portions and working out is the best way to lose the weight you want and keep it off .

Jennifer, Does the Seven Day Bikini Diet from the March issue REALLY work?

-Theresa Clark

Like I said before, I swear by it. I lost 10 pounds before my brother’s wedding by strictly following the diet. However, like any other crash diet, exercise and continuing to eat healthy is required to keep the weight off after you go off the diet.

Abby, What is your worst unhealthy vice?

-Bernadette Creasey

Donuts. Absolutely. I am a sucker for every type and brand - from national Krispy Kreme’s to local sugary confections like Gordough’s -  I’ve had them all. Th e worst part is, I have found absolutely no substitution for their sugary goodness, so I am left with an incurable weakness for glazed donuts hot out of the oven.

When Seattle’s Fleet Foxes played outdoors in the drunken Texas sun at South By Southwest earlier this year, it was impossible not to be stirred by their harmonies, that were so sweet they sounded holy. Hailing from Seattle, The Fleet Foxes hail infl uence from Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and The Beach Boys to produce a harmonious fl uid musical experience. Missing these guys play live would be something of shame consider-ing Austin is one of their favorite venues to play at. Fleet Foxes are sitting on two successful records and multiple singles that coax the listener in an entirely different musical experience.

Bobcat starting pitcher Car-son Smith has been an inte-gral part to the team’s early season success. As of May 1st, Smith sported a 3-1 record with an impressive 42 strike-outs in only 35 innings. On the offensive side of the ball, Tyler Sibley has been crazy good. As of MAY 1st, he was batting a scorching .440 and had 10 steals in 13 attempts. Two other Bobcats each had 10 steals each as of the point, and Casey Kalenkosky was tearing the cover off the ball

with 33 RBI. As of press time, the Bobcats were tied for first place with Stephen F. Aus-tin. The Bobcats opened the Southland conference season 8-1 and played in-state pow-erhouses Texas, Baylor and TCU well. Although they lost all three contests, they were only outscored 12-7 by those big-time programs. The team wraps up its home contests against Nicholls St. on May 13th, 14th and 15th, so make sure to head over to the sta-dium to cheer them on!

SMITH AND SIBLEY – SUPER SOLID!

DOIN’ IT ALL HALLAs of May 1st, softballer Chandler Hall has 14 RBI, is 4-4 on steal attempts and has been a solid hurler. She’d al-ready amassed a crazy 122.1 in-nings pitched with an impres-sive 117 strikeouts and eight of the team’s 15 wins.

I’d say the best part about spouting all the random knowledge you know is best suited for a room of strangers, competing for victory, while also being refi lled on each round for correct answers. Geeks Who Drink is an eight round game of trivia following Happy Hour at The Tap Room. Fill up the drink, bunker down and vie for the drunkest trivia master title.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the bar?I love the variety of music we play in this bar. You never know who is going to walk through the door.  Th ere are people from all walks of life and ages that come to the Triple Crown.

Q: What is the best night to come in and why? Every night is a good night to come out!  We have live music every day and night.  It starts at happy hour, which is at 6 pm  Th e bands work for tips and you can get wells and drafts for $1.50! We also have $2 you call its on Sunday through Tuesdays from 9 until 11.  I like to check our live music calendar daily to see what genre of music we will be having. It’s always a pleasant surprise!

Q: If someone were to talk dirty to you in a foreign language from across the bar, you’d want it to be…Russian.  I don’t know why, but it’s very sexy!

Q: If a customer was being rude and obnoxious, you would probably: Forget the booze altogether and kill ‘em with kind-ness as always.  If all else fails, hose ‘em down.  I have been known to do that from time to time.

Q: If you became a famous rapper, your name would be? Th at’s funny because my band’s name is Debatron. It’s a nickname I got from a patron years ago.  I always thought it could be a rapper name.  My alternate would be Debalicious.  Th at’s another nickname I got working here.

Q: Favorite Drink? Lemon Drops- yummy! I love them and everyone likes to order them from me.  Bloody Mary as well, they are my personal favorites.

It’d be hard to pin one single genre on John Laws when he picks up an instrument, or in-struments for that matter. Th e John Laws Band is a solo project featuring John Laws from Th e Woodlands, Texas. Spending most of his time perfecting his craft, John has traveled across Texas playing his music includ-ing local venues like Wake the Dead Coff ee House and Tantra Coff ee House. Claiming to fi nd inspiration from almost every possible genre out there, John Laws takes a unique blend of ex-perimental folk, with a splash of acoustic alternative to mesmer-ize viewers as he expresses his life’s passion through a mighty musical medium.

How long have you been playing music? Music has been involved in my life since I was a young boy. I always wanted to play electric guitar. I was in multiple choirs during middle school, and I also

played trombone in the school’s wind ensemble. Around high school, I started getting into writing my own music while utilizing my electric guitar. My family has always supported my passion for music, and I’m very thankful for that.

Where do you fi nd inspi-ration for writing music? Writing music is just like fall-ing in love. Love falls into your lap when you least expect it. I’ve found myself in countless situ-ations where something has in-spired me, but I’ve had no way to act upon the idea. Something about me that not many people know is that I’m mostly inspired when taking a shower. Many of the songs I’ve written have start-ed in the bathroom.

Which bands did you listen to growing up?Growing up, I mostly listened to a variety of original scores and soundtracks to movies and video

games. I’ve always had a spe-cial place in my heart for the nostalgia that  playing video games  and watching movies can bring.

How did you get into the music scene? I love the energy that fi lls me when sharing stories and melodies with others. Th ere’s nothing like playing and cap-tivating a group of complete strangers with something you’ve created out of silence.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened at a show?Once, I had a sound engineer critique my singing style. At that point in my writing, I tended to sang quietly with a very “airy” voice. Th e engineer kept saying, “Sing louder! Sing louder!” It was very discouraging, but I let it slide. Th at was a pretty weird show.

Creating a relationship with your hairdresser can be a diffi cult task. How

trustworthy are they? Can I make sure they aren’t going to leave me walking away in tears? At Salon Mink, they create a style best fi t for your personality and style on top of building a relationship with you. Salon Mink places their clients fi rst, leaving you feeling and looking fabulous. “We are honored with the trust you place in our staff and adore your loyalty,” says Lauren Guerra, Director of Marketing. She gives us the insight on how the spunky and sassy salon staff can mark their territory and passion on your hair.

If someone wants to try something bold, what would you suggest?I would say, “Congratulations, you came to the right spot, now, SIT DOWN.”

Describe your staff:Every person on our staff is diverse and unique in their own way, but the common denominator is talent and a passion for beauty. We cover all the bases with our personalities, which range

from traditional style to punk rock, sassy Tennessee twang, the sorority girl, life-size Barbie, hippy chic and everywhere in between. Our staff is just as diverse as our clientele. We have extreme talent and we are all blessed that we have the lowest turnover rate in salon history.

What services do you provide for your customers? We are a full-service salon and we off er any hair service from haircuts to extensions; makeup applications and airbrush makeup; full body waxing (not just for the ladies, but gentlemen, too), facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, as well as, chair and full body massages.

A student is stressed for fi nals: what is the perfect massage to get?Any massage is the perfect answer to stress, but I would go for a one-hour full body massage with focus on the head, neck and shoulders! Of course we off er shorter massages, but let’s be honest, those are just a tease.

Always on the go, Donovan Marshall fi ts in a workout everyday. As soon as he

rolls out of bed to the minute before falling asleep, he spends spare time at the gym. Th is routine wasn’t always scheduled though. Growing up, Donovan was on the heavier side. His way of life needed to change, and fast, because college was just around the corner.

The Build UpComing from a single-parent household, Donovan’s mother prepared home cooked meals that were loaded with grease. “She just worked so much that she made the quick and greasy foods for me,” says Donovan. Having this unhealthy diet led him to be the chubby kid in class around the 5th grade. His weight escalated from there. His habits became increasingly worse as he got older. Whether it be pizza, hamburgers, red meat, and sodas especially, he ate it all. Fast foods consumed his life.

High SchoolWhen he reached 270 poundsjunior year of high school, Donovan knew that he should start to lose weight if he planned on participating in extra curricular activities. “I didn’t want to be the fat kid on the sidelines.” So Donovan decided to try out for the cheer squad at his high school. After making it on the team, he began to build close relationships with the ladies in high school, but none were ever classifi ed as, “Th e One.” Th e ladies viewed

him as someone to protect them, rather than being their high school sweetheart. “Weight didn’t seem to be the problem, because I have a loveable personality,” says Donovan. He was really excited to participate in his high school’s cheer squad, where he not only developed the majority of friendships with his teammates, but also was forced to shape up.

Breaking PointBeing a family oriented person, Donovan holds his family and those close to him dear to his heart. “I realized that I needed to lose weight when I saw some of my family member’s health deteriorate. I chose to make better food selections, cut down carbs, eat more green vegetables, and exercised daily—always following with a gallon of water.” Hard work and determination was a huge factor in leading Donovan down the right path

to lose weight. ChangesCollege is another chapter in life where you can create a new image for yourself. You have the opportunity to change for the better and become someone diff erent than who you were in high school. You make new friends, you make your own schedule, and most of all, you make your own food choices. College had a huge infl uence on Donovan’s decision to become fi t and healthy. He stayed away from his mother’s home cooked meals, and changed his eating habits all together. His new diet consisted of smaller portions, no eating out at fast food chains, no drinking sodas, and strictly eating dinner before 8pm.

InspirationDonovan used self-motivation

to change his heavy habits. He surrounded himself with others who wanted to change as well, and join the road to become healthy. “I hired a personal trainer for three months in order to assist me with obtaining my goal. He gave me valuable insight on how the mind and body can work hand in hand to achieve your goal.” Th at goal was defi nitely reached. Donovan lost about 95 pounds.

ReactionsReturning home after his fi rst year of college was a huge shock to Donovan’s family. Th ey were all very excited to see the pounds that he once had, gone. He’d get reactions such as, “Donovan, are you eating?” and “Why are you working out so much?” Th e best conclusion, “I just wanted to live a healthier life. I’ve committed to be fi t.”

Growing up, Christopher Fuller was ridiculed for his weight and was often called “Chubs.” In uenced by his family’s

eating habits of frequently dining out, Christopher didn’t develop a healthy diet and had a vice for fast food and energy drinks. He was a self-described “carbo-holic”. Eventually Christopher hit his all time high of 208 pounds at 5’11. Tired by the stress of dealing with his weight, Christopher broke down, calling himself fat and out of shape. at is when he knew it was time for a change. Now at 6’1 and 185 pounds with less than 10 percent body fat, Christopher has taken his life into an entire new direction. He dumped the fast food and high sugar drinks and got himself a personal trainer. He also trained himself to eat 4-6 smaller portion controlled meals throughout the day and even helped his family members to get in shape as well. Now Christopher works at Nutrishop mo-tivating others to also create a healthier lifestyle for themselves and has a carefully planned workout schedule. How do you like living on your own? I love living on my own, the freedom to do whatever, whenever has got to be the best.

What is one item in your room that best describes you? My coexist fl ag, it pretty much sums up my views on life.

What do you like best about living away from your parents? Th e best part about not living with my parents is knowing that my apartment is my domain, I get to make the rules.

What is one thing you wouldn’t live without in your apartment? My tea pot. I love tea, and I make it all the time, because I don’t really like coff ee.

What was your inspiration for decorating your room? I don’t know if you could say there was a single source of

inspiration, it’s more just a collection of things I’ve found that I like to keep around.

What advice would you give to someone shopping for apartments for the fi rst time?Th e best advice is to look early and fi nd a place that’s near everything.

How do you like living with roommates? I don’t mind living with roommates, as long as everyone takes care of themselves. It usually works out fi ne.

When setting boundaries, what were some you discussed with your roommates? Well I’m a smoker, so we set boundaries about where smoking was allowed. Other than that we pretty much take it case by case.

How close are you to campus? It takes about fi ve minutes to get to campus from my place, if traffi c isn’t crazy. I like being close to campus, it’s nice when you don’t have to wait long to get off a bus that’s bursting from the seams with people.

What would you change differently next year when decorating your room? I would try to see if I could paint the walls. Th ere’s something really boring about white walls.
