Dear Kennedy Families, We are just about at the halfway point and teachers and students con-tinue to be in the learning mode. The STAR reading and math assess-ments are about finished and will provide a snapshot of the progress students have been making in reading and math. The data from the as-sessments are used to provide teachers with information on students’ strengths and areas of growth. The information is utilized to plan and guide instruction in the classroom. You will receive the STAR report for your child at your child’s conference. We are looking forward to meeting with our Kennedy families again in February for Parent/ Teacher Conferences. Parents will be receiving a note with your conference time with your child’s teacher. Conferences will be held on Wednesday, February 21st and Thursday, February 22nd. We always strive to meet with a 100% of our families. We ap-preciate the efforts you make to attend these conferences and partner with our school to support your child’s learning. Thank you to the families that were able to attend our Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade Literacy Night. If you were unable to make it or would like more information about reading strategies, the Family Resource Center, or social emotional skills, please stop in the office and we would be happy to provide you with information. Our next event sponsored by the PTO is Family Fitness Night on Wednesday, February 28th. As always, feel free to contact me with any ideas, questions, compli-ments, or concerns you may have regarding Kennedy School. You can reach me at [email protected] or 743-7505.

WINTER WEATHER REMINDERS

As the weather continues to change and the cold weather approaches we have a few

reminders for student safety at Kennedy:

All students go outside twice each day for recess and lunch recess. Winter

clothing is necessary every day. This should include a warm winter coat, hat, and

gloves or mittens. Younger students (K-2) must have snow pants and boots on in

order to go into the snow. Older students (3-5) should have boots or they will need

to stay on the blacktop. If their clothing gets wet they will not be allowed to call

home.

We use a temperature and wind chill factor of 0 degrees or below to determine

if students stay indoors . If it is before school, these same temperatures determine

whether or not students can come into the building at 8:05 a.m.

If it is raining or snowing in the morning when students come to school, they

are to go to their playground doors to line up - not the front doors. There are staff

members on the playgrounds for supervision at 8:05 a.m. and will let student in

and direct them where they should go until the bell rings.

Winter can present challenges for driving. Please remember to pull over to the

stop-drop-go curb to pick up and drop off your child. Please do not park your car

in this area or near any of the cones. We want to continue to keep students safe in

the ice and snow. We will continue to work with the Janesville Police Department

to monitor the traffic in the front and back stop-drop-go areas.

A reminder to our families about weather related closing and delays notifica-

tion. The Campus Messenger system will serve as our primary means of notification.

We urge you to make sure the school has your current contact information. On

days when there are possible school cancellations due to weather please listen to

WCLO (AM 1230) or other local radio and TV stations for school closings and de-

lays. Closing and delays will be posted no later than 6:00 a.m. If schools have a

one hour delay, we will have adult supervision at 9:05 a.m. If there is a two hour

delay, we will have adult supervision at 10:05 a.m. Elementary breakfast clubs will

not serve meals when school has been delayed.

Schools do not close early to avoid incoming snow or ice storms. This policy is

to protect children who may get home before their parents and have no access to

supervision at home. There will be no athletic contests and practices on days school

is called off for weather reasons. They gyms will be closed.

Parents always have the option of keeping your child home due to inclement

weather. You must call school to report your decision to keep your child home.

Thank you for helping us continue to keep students safe during the winter months!

Hello from the Band Room! With Mini Pep Band over with, band students are returning to learning songs in their

book. We have many new concepts coming up in the next few weeks, including new time signatures, ties, slurs,

new notes, and a new key signature. Looking towards the future, we will have a couple more performances com-

ing up in April and May. As always, please keep reminding and encouraging your child to practice at home. Con-

sistent practicing is essential to success on an instrument. Please let me know if you have any questions or con-

cerns about how your student is doing in band.

MUSIC NEWS BY MR. RILEY, MUSIC TEACHER

Greeting from Mr. Riley!

Students have been hard at work at learning about in-struments and their families! Kindergarten learned the Story of Peter and the Wolf - a Musical Fairytale where each character is represented by a different instrument in the orchestra. 1st and 2nd graders learned about the science of sound and why each instrument can fit into a specific family. They even got to make two instruments of their own!! 3rd, 4th and 5th graders reviewed the instrument families and using an APP called GarageBand to compose their own music using instru-ments of their choice! Very Exciting Stuff!

In February and March students will take this a step further as we get ready to learn and play instru-ments in the classroom. 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders in music class will be learning basic songs on a Ukelele (NEW THIS YEAR!!), while students in grades K, 1, and 2 will be exploring our piano key-boards! Please make sure to ask your child what they are learning in music class!

Kennedy Art News By: Ms. Karen Smerlinski, Art Teacher

Students are sharing their fine work in art exhibits in our halls, in the wider Janesville community, and at Artsonia.com!

Kennedy Elementary students recently participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Banner Project. Fifth Grade students created concepts which were shared with Grade 3 illustra-tion teams

A special thank you to Jasmine Braker, Landon Klemencic and Presley Morgan for their great ideas, which inspired the Third Grade art classes!

The resulting cooperative mural projects represented Kennedy School at the recent Martin Lu-ther King celebration at Blackhawk Technical College. Now that these murals are returned to Kennedy, they are on display along the yellow brick road until the end of February. Please take a look at the wonderful student work when you are in the building!

Five Kennedy students produced artwork selected for this special exhibit. Kennedy artists in-clude Caleigh Huse, Maizie Poulsen, Abi Anderson, Kamryn Anderson, and Madeline Gomez.

Grade 4 Cartoon Club is wrapping up soon! The week of January 29th is the last independent cartooning project for the club. More information will be announced soon about a Cartoon Club Celebration Meeting, which will be pushed back into February due to busy schedules and many

STEM/STEAM club events.

Grade 4 STEAM Club is in full swing and is meeting Wednesdays after school. Participating stu-dents explore Math concepts through Physical Education, Music, Technology and Art. Final projects will be shared soon in this Kennedy Newsletter!

When the Arts are Integrated

with other subjects,

students explore… and soar!

PHY ED NEWS BY MRS. CAMPBELL, PE INSTRUCTOR

We started the New Year off with a Yoga unit in PE. We used the website

Cosmickids.com . The students did yoga moves as a story was being told,

some of the stories were Frozen, Star Wars and Moana. Our PE classes did a

Tumbling unit next, where the students worked on their flexibility, balance

skills, and rolls on the mats. In the end of January was the “Gymnastics” ob-

stacle course that was set-up for them to work on; balance, upper arm

strength, plus body control. Everyone worked on the balance beam, parallel

bars, vault, and climbing ropes and cargo net.

The second trimester grades will reflect your child’s: Class rules/expectations,

P.E. Vocabulary, Sportsmanship, and Skills in the following units-Tennis/

Paddles,Bowling, Games, Dance, Tumbling, Gymnastics, Skating (1st-5th), and

the Heart Aventure Course. The 4th and 5th graders will also have the chance to

snow shoe during P.E. class, depending on the weather. Your child’s grade may

go up or down depending on their ability in the units. We try to incorporate a

wide variety of units so that all students are successful. Our progress reports

are on a scale of 1-4. Please remember that a 1 = Minimal, 2 = Basic, 3* =

Proficient (*expected level), 4 = Advanced.

Keep active to stay healthy! - Mrs. Campbell

Please help and

work with your

child to learn to tie

their shoes. Tying

in a double knot

would be espe-

cially helpful.

We welcome parents, grandparents and community members to volunteer at Ken-

nedy. If you would like to volunteer in a classroom, in our lunch room, help with spe-

cial programs or chaperone field trips this year, please stop in the office and pick up a

School District of Janesville Volunteer Application. All volunteers must be approved at

the District level. If you have any questions about the volunteer process, please con-

tact the office at 743-7506.

A Message from the Academic Learning Coach Spring Testing Information

In March and April, 3rd - 5th grade students will be taking the Forward WI exam. Each grade level will be assigned specific

testing times, so please be looking for a letter from your child’s teacher soon with the dates that your child will be testing. All

3rd - 5th grade students will be testing in the areas of English language arts and mathematics. In addition, the 4th grade stu-

dents will have a social studies and science portion of the test.

All K-5 students will be taking the STAR assessment in April and May. This will be the third (and final) STAR test for this

school year. This assessment will provide teachers with excellent information about your child’s growth, as well as how we

will meet their needs for the next school year.

A few things that you can do at home to help your child do their best during these assessments are:

1. Please make sure they are here at school. Attendance before, during, and after testing is extremely crucial

to the students’ academic success.

2, Try to schedule any appointments outside of your child’s test times. When your child is then taken out of the class to

perform the make-up test, they are losing learning time in the classroom.

3. Make sure your child comes to school well rested and has had a good breakfast. Don’t forget we have breakfast club

here at Kennedy everyday starting at 7:45 and the best part is it’s free!

TAG News For students in grades 3-5, the Delta Kappa Gamma writing contest entries should be

turned in by February 16th, 2018. The Spring Noetic Math contest will take place on Thurs-

day, April 5th, 2018. Please be on the lookout for more information. Results from the

competitions will be announced as soon as possible.

MOVING?

If you will be moving from your current home address, please contact the

Kennedy school office at 743-7506 as soon as possible to determine

what paperwork you will need to fill out for your child to continue attend-

ing his/her current school. Please note: if you are moving to an address

outside the School District of Janesville in most cases your child is eligi-

ble to continue attending the School District of Janesville as long as you

complete the appropriate paperwork within the required timeline.

If you have any questions about school placement for a particular ad-

dress, please contact Administrative Services Secretary, Tami Carlson, at

743-5006. The Administrative Services Office is open year round.

Regular school attendance is so very important. It is only through regular atten-

dance that students are able to take full advantage of their learning opportuni-

ties. The responsibility for elementary school attendance rests upon the student

and the parent/guardian.

Under state law a parent/guardian may only excuse their child’s absence from

school for 10 days during a school year. This includes absences related to ex-

cuses for part of a school day. Absences related to student medical needs, fu-

neral, or an out of school suspension are not counted against the par-

ent/guardian excused absences. However, please schedule routine appoint-

ments outside the school day as much as possible.

Please make sure your child is here on time every day ready to learn. Establish-

ing a consistent morning routine which includes getting to school on time when

your child is young will help him/her for an entire school career and beyond.

Please remember

to call the school

attendance line at

743-7565 by 8:15

a.m. if your child

will not be attend-

ing school due to

an illness or

planned absence.

AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS

(AED’S)

Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been purchased by the School

District of Janesville and have been installed in all Janesville Schools. We

hope the need to use this device never takes place; however, it is reassuring

to know that in the event of a medical emergency the AED is available. The

AED at Kennedy Elementary School is located in the gym hallway.

FRONT/BACK CIRCLE DRIVES

Please note that school and a Janesville Police Department Community Service Officer will be

monitoring the front and back parking lots. The purpose of this is to ensure the safety of our stu-

dents during the morning drop off and afternoon pick up of students.

Please follow the stop-drop-go rules. Do NOT leave your vehicle. If you need to leave your vehicle

you must park in a stall in either the front or back parking lots or on the street. The Janesville

Police Department Community Service Officer will be issuing tickets to all drivers who park in the

circle drives or who leave their vehicles.

Thank you for your help in ensuring the safety of all Kennedy students.

PARKING

Please be sure to park your vehicle in a stall in the parking lot or park on the street if you

plan to leave the vehicle at the start or end of the day.

Do NOT park in the driveway. The Stop-Drop-Go signs state that vehicles should not be left

unattended.

Thank you!

Child Find Notice

“The school district must locate, identify and evaluate all resident children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending

private schools, regardless of the severity of their disabilities.” The school district has a special education program to locate and screen all

children with suspected disabilities who are residents of the district and who have not graduated from high school. Upon request the school

district will screen any resident child who has not graduated high school to determine whether a special education referral is appropriate. A

request may be made by contacting Kimberli Peerenboom, Director of Pupil Services for the School District of Janesville at 743-5061, or by

writing her at 527 S. Franklin St., Janesville WI 53548.

Annually the district conducts developmental screening of preschool children. Each child’s motor, communication and social skills are ob-

served at various play areas. Each child is weighed and measured, and the child’s hearing and vision is checked. The information is used to

provide the parent with a profile of their child’s current development and to provide suggestions for follow up activities. Parents learn about

community services available to them and speak with representatives of agencies serving families. The information from screening is also

used to determine whether a child should be evaluated for a suspected disability. When school staff reasonably believe a child is a child

with a disability, they refer the child for evaluation by a school district Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Developmental screen-

ing will be a part of the kindergarten screening this Spring. Watch for dates at your local school.

A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for

services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to report the child to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the

child, the person making the referral must inform the child’s parents that the referral will be made. The referral must be in writing and in-

clude the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. Others who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disabil-

ity may also refer the child to the school district in which the child resides. A referral of a child residing in the School District of Janesville

may be sent to Kimberli Peerenboom at the school district address above.”

distrito escolar.

Public School Open Enrollment Timelines

The State of Wisconsin has announced the application period for open enrollment (also known as

public school choice) begins in February for the following school year. Open Enrollment laws per-

mit children to attend a public school in a school district other than the one in which they live.

The open enrollment application period for the 2018-2019 school year is from February 5, 2018 –

April 30, 2018. Parents are encouraged to apply on-line at https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment.

Although on-line application is recommended, paper applications may be obtained from the De-

partment of Public Instruction or any school district after January 15, 2018 and must be delivered

(hand-delivery is recommended) to the nonresident school district during the application period.

Paper applications to attend Janesville must be submitted to the Administrative Services Depart-

ment no later than 4:00 p.m. on April 30th (a postmark does not constitute timely submission).

Applications turned in prior to February 5th will be returned as not valid and must be resubmitted

after February 5th but before April 30th.

Enrollment in a requested school or program is subject to space and other limitations and is not

guaranteed. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent.

Under School District of Janesville board policy, students who attended the district under open en-

rollment the previous year are not required to reapply for the following school year.

An application is required for each sibling in the family. For example, if a family has one child in

elementary school that has been approved for open enrollment and a new student entering kin-

dergarten next year, the student entering kindergarten must apply for open enrollment in order to

attend the School District of Janesville.

Parents will be informed in June whether their open enrollment applications have been approved

or denied. The student’s school or program placement will be provided in June.

If you have questions, please contact the Administrative Services Office at 743-5006.

https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment.
