619.397.2250ASB Advisor - Ms. Leonhardt

The ASB is responsible for establishing the activity program at our school. These activities are incentives for earning good citizenship and scholarship grades and promoting school involvement. ASB sponsors assemblies, dances, contests, spirit days, and school-wide trips to Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm.

There are a number of clubs and organizations at BVM that you may wish to join. Listen to the daily bulletin for information regarding these exciting opportuni-ties.

Each student should have a current student ID card in his/her possession at all times. This is identification for all activities including purchasing tickets to dances and field trips. It is also needed to check out books and iPads from our library.

DANCES

The ASB sponsors dances during the school year. All dances, with the excep-tion of the Sweetheart Dance, are held after school from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Stu-dents must arrive at dances within 15 minutes after the doors are opened and re-main for the entire dance. Dancing must be appropriate! A student ID card must be presented to purchase a dance ticket. Students attending the dance agree to abide by all school rules and follow the directions of dance chaperones. ONLY BVM students in good standing (not on the non-privileged list) may purchase tick-ets and attend dances. The student ID must be presented at the door to enter the dance. BVM does not have formal dances. Clothing must follow the school’s dress guidelines. Transportation: It is important that students make transportation ar-rangements prior to the dance. Parents are to pick up their children in the front of the school no later than 15 minutes after the dance or they will not be allowed to attend the next dance.

ASSEMBLIES

Our assemblies are educational or promote school spirit. Assemblies are a privi-lege and proper behavior is expected. Students are to proceed to and from assem-blies with their class and in a quiet/orderly manner with the teacher. When a stu-dent or staff member approaches the microphone, students must stop talking and listen. While in an assembly, it is proper to show appreciation by applause. Be re-spectful of others.

Attendance

619.397.2202Attendance Tech - Ms. DeLeon

California State Law requires school attendance for students under age 18. In or-der to receive a sound, well-rounded education, being at school, on time, every day is vital.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE always looks good on a student’s record and can set one student ahead of another when it comes to academic and athletic scholar-ships! Perfect attendance is achieved by coming to school every day with no tardies

and/or by clearing absences by attending Saturday school. In addition, at BVM we recognize and reward students with per-fect attendance every six weeks with ice cream parties, pizza parties, free dances, certificates, etc.

To report student absences, please call the attendance office at 397-2200 on the morning of the absence. If you have not

called the school, a note with par-ent signature must be sent. An automated call from the district will go to the home phone number when one or more periods of absence occur. If the school’s office was called that day, please ignore the district call.

13

Page 15: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

After an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to ask each teacher how to make up the work missed. If the student is absent for three or more days, the counseling office can be called to make arrangements for assignments to be avail-able 24 hours later for pick up in the counseling office.

Students without a note, unverified absences, or unexcused absences will be as-signed Saturday School. Illness, medical appointments, or a death in the immedi-ate family are considered excused absences. Excused absences are not cleared absences; they remain on a student’s record! The only way to completely clear an absence, even if it is excused, is by attending Sat-urday school. Excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused, may result in the student being referred to the School Attendance Review Board (Court). Stu-dents will be placed on an attendance contract for excessive absences, excused or unexcused.

Absences must be excused by a parent within ten days of the ab-sence. Per district policy, after ten days, an absence can only be cleared by attending Saturday school.

Unexcused absences must be cleared by attending Saturday school. A student is assigned one Saturday school for each day of unexcused absence. If a student does not serve the assigned Saturday school without getting prior permission to resched-ule, they will be assigned ARC on Friday as a consequence and must still serve the Saturday school to clear the absence.

If an absence has been excused, it remains on the student record as an absence. For an absence to be cleared for perfect attendance rewards and recognition, it can be done by attending Saturday school. Perfect attendance gives students an edge over others as they look toward academics and athletics in high school, schol-arships, etc.

Short-term Independent Study Contract - IMPORTANT!

When a student is to be absent between 3 - 20 days, the parent should call the attendance office three to four days in advance to have the student placed on a

14

Page 16: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

short-term independent study contract. The student will receive work to complete from teachers during the absence. At the conclusion of the contract when the stu-dent returns to school, the student must turn the work in to the attendance office and the absence will be excused and cleared.

Truancy

Truancy will not be tolerated as it often results in falling behind in class work and poor grades - as well as being illegal. At the teacher’s discretion students may or may not be able to make up class work. A truancy is an unexcused absence from school all day, from one or more classes, or being 15 minutes or more late to a class. Truancy will require parent notification, lowered citizenship grade, atten-dance at Saturday School and/or suspension, and eventual referral to the juvenile court system through the SARB (Student Attendance Review Board) process.

Tardies

All students must be in class by 8:05 a.m. We expect all students to be on time to all classes. A student must be in his/her seat when the bell rings. Each tardy also lowers the student’s citizenship grade. Whenever a student is tardy to school without a note from a doctor, they are assigned detention in the cafeteria during the first ten minutes of lunch. (This allows more than ample time to eat after.) It is the student’s responsibility to show up to the detention on time as explained on the slip they are given when the detention is assigned. Habitually tardy students may receive Saturday School, and possibly ARC placement. We expect all students to start each day by arriving on time.

Promptness Is Your Responsibility.

Excused Tardy: If a student is late to school for any reason, the student must bring a note from the parent or legal guardian, or they may call the attendance of-fice. If a parent excuses a tardy and there is no doctor’s note is provided, the stu-dent is subject to being assigned the 10 minute lunch detention. Heavy traffic is a

15

Page 17: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

daily concern every morning, so please plan for it; it is not an excuse for arriving late.

Unexcused Tardy: If a student is late for school or class for any reason without a note or call from the parent/guardian, it is recorded as an unexcused tardy and the student is assigned a 10 minute lunch detention. Students may clear their tar-dies during after school detention or Saturday school.

Consequences for excessive or unexcused tardies and absences include:

•Teacher discipline

•Parent contact

•Counselor Referral

•AP Referral

•Deduction of Citizenship Grade

•Placement on Non-Privileged List

•Academic Recovery Center

• Saturday School

• Referral to SARB (Juvenile Court)

Leaving Campus

We are a CLOSED CAMPUS. You are not permitted to leave until the end of the school day. This policy includes the lunch period. There is no off-campus lunch.

Students who need to leave campus must provide the office with a note (includ-ing student’s full name and parent signature) by 8:00 a.m. An OFF-CAMPUS PERMIT must be picked up from the attendance office before the student leaves the campus and a parent or other person previously authorized on the emergency information by the parent must come in to the office to sign the child out. This per-

16

Page 18: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

mit is kept until the next day when a student should present it to the teachers of the missed classes.

No student will be issued an off-campus permit without a signed note from the parent/guardian.

No student will be released to leave campus under any circum-stances unless a parent or previously authorized adult, per emer-gency information provided by parent during enrollment, with valid picture identification, comes in to the office to sign out the student.

Leaving Campus Without A Proper Permit Is Considered A Truancy!

17

Crisis and Emergency Situations

The school has a crisis plan that is communicated to students and staff. We will hold drills throughout the year. It is important that students follow the instructions of the staff. During an emergency, phones may not be used by students until in-structed to do so.

If there is a crisis, a letter will be given to students to take home. If the crisis re-quires parents coming to school, phone calls will be made. Please stay calm and fol-low the instructions from the staff. Do not call the school as staff will be assisting outside resources with the emergency. Your cooperation and support is required.

It is important that parents discuss this with their students and develop a com-munication plan and a meeting plan that would work with or without the use of phones.

Notify your counselor or assistant principal immediately when you hear or see that a:

• classmate is in possession of drugs or weapons.

• classmate wants to injure themselves or others.

HAVE THE STRENGTH OF CHARACTER TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND REPORT IT TO A COUNSELOR OR ASSISTANT PRINCI-PAL!

How will you feel when someone gets hurt because you were more concerned about what others might think than doing the right thing??

YOU don’t have to determine whether or not it’s a joke. Allow the adults on campus to work with the professionals to make that determination. Quick interven-tion is important and you may be saving someone from getting hurt.

Grades, Promotion, Academics

GRADING

Both scholarship and citizenship grades are recorded as "A", "B", “C", "D", and "F". An "A" grade represents outstanding achievement, a "C" grade repre-sents average work, a "D" grade represents poor performance, and an “F” means no credit was earned.

Progress Reports/Report Cards

Bonita Vista Middle’s school year is divided into two 18-week semesters. Final semester grades will be issued on Report Cards in December and June. These grades will go on the student's permanent record.

Progress Reports are issued to students every six weeks. They provide an assess-ment of the student's current progress as they work toward final semester grades that are given on Report Cards that are mailed home.

Scholarship Grades: Teachers establish their own standards for grades, based on district guidelines, in their classes. They explain their system at the start of each semester and at back-to-school night.

19

Page 21: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

Citizenship Grades: Good citizenship is more than just good behavior. A stu-dent's citizenship grade also includes:

Class participation

Turning in assignments complete

Meeting all deadlines

Bringing necessary materials to class

Being on time to class

Making proper use of class time

General class behavior: being respectful and responsible

20

Page 22: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS

Students must satisfactorily complete 21 out of 24 credits in required courses (12 classes in grade 7 and 12 classes in grade 8) with a grade of “D” or better. Spe-cifically all Math and English/Language Arts courses in both grades 7 and 8 must be passed to be eligible to participate in the eighth grade promotion ceremony.

Students who fall behind in credits may have the opportunity to earn promo-tion by successfully completing credit recovery classes. When available, these classes consist of sixty hours of study and are scheduled on a limited basis after school and on Saturdays. Please see your counselor to check on the availability of credit recovery classes.

Grade 8 students who are prepared to enter high school, have met the aca-demic requirements, have cleared outstanding fines or payments and are in good standing may participate in promotional events.

For questions regarding general promotion requirements, your progress, etc., p l e a s e s e e y o u c o u n s e l o r. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY

Doing one’s own work is essential to the academic and personal integrity of each student. To falsely take credit for work that belongs to another student or source is not acceptable behavior.

Plagiarism is the copying of another student’s work and/or the copying of ma-terial from another source (i.e., Internet or published) and taking personal credit for it.

Cheating is taking an examination/quiz in a dishonest way (i.e.: having im-proper access to answers).

21

Page 23: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

Participating in an act of cheating and/or plagiarism is unacceptable and causes a student’s credibility to be in question. Consequences for cheating and/or plagiarism are as follows:

On the first offense all of the following will occur:

1. A grade of “0” on the assignment or on the test with no make-up oppor tunity

2. Parent notification by the teacher

3. Possible failing grade in citizenship

4. Referral to counselor for intervention

On subsequent offenses all of the following will occur:

1. A grade of “0” on the assignment or on the test with no make-up oppor tunity

2. Referral to the assistant principal with disciplinary consequences that may include suspension.

3. Parent, student, teacher and assistant principal conference

4. Failing grade in citizenship

Both the student providing the material/test answers and the student receiving the information are equally guilty and subject to equal consequences.

HOMEWORK

Homework is an integral part of the school program. It is designed to supple-ment class instruction and give students the opportunity to practice the skills learned. Homework is usually assigned Monday through Friday. The teacher's class procedures will define their policy. Students not completing homework are subject to being assigned to AEC.

Each class provides homework assignments. To achieve success, BVM students should spend a minimum of 30 minutes per academic subject each night on home-work and review. Recreational reading is also an important part of a student's homework program.

If the student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to check with each teacher to find out the work that has been missed. Call a “study buddy” or check Jupiter Grades.

Students are expected to make up all missing assignments.

Advisory is a 30-minute period that all students have in their daily schedule. Advisory is a very important program that provides valuable time to students to raise their academic achievement. You will receive a citizenship grade for this class and will need to conduct yourself according to school and classroom rules.

Advisory is for:

•Completing daily assignments

•Participating in recreational reading

•Receiving tutoring

•Participatiing in club or school activity

•Conducting library research

•Conducting writing lab activities

•Make up tests/activities

23

Page 25: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

All students must have a signed pass from one of their teachers, and sign out with Advisory teacher before leaving Advisory. All passes are checked the follow-ing day.

Students are expected to make good use of their time in Advisory.

Tutoring: Every Monday through Thursday after school we offer a Home-work Center where students can do research, work in small groups, or be tutored by a teacher. The Homework Center is open from 3:10 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no late bus available at this time, so students will need to provide their own trans-portation.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT INTERVENTIONS

Bonita Vista Middle School strives to provide every opportunity to ensure each child is ready to earn a high school diploma and leaves school prepared for success in college or a career pathway. This preparation begins now at the middle school level. Every student—regardless of personal or academic circumstances—wants to succeed. Every student can and will succeed in school -- given rigorous class-room instruction and extra academic support that is timely, targeted and directive. If your child is completing all homework and demonstrating proficiency in all aca-demic assessments, then the student is well on track to reaching the immediate goal of a high school diploma.

However, we recognize that all students do not learn at the same pace. Some need extra support. Below is a list of the successful interventions your son/daughter may be required to attend this school year to address the need to demon-strate proficiency in their core classes (English, Math, Science, Social Science). The benefit to your student is tremendous!

Whenever a student does not complete a homework assignment, a teacher can assign the student to attend AEC. The student is required to attend AEC to com-plete the missing homework assignment on the same day for morning classes, on the following day for afternoon classes. Phone calls go out daily to parents the same day to the home phone number on file to inform them when AEC is as-signed. Should you wish for us to use another phone number to contact you, please call the front office at 619-397-2200. While the Academic Support Office makes reasonable effort to contact parents, it is the responsibility of the student to inform parents when they are assigned AEC.

Students with transportation issues may attend AEC the next day as long as a parent notifies the Academic Support Office office.

We believe by providing timely, targeted and directive academic support your student will understand the expectations needed to be ready for success at the high school level. Please help us by making sure you child attends school every day and, if assigned, by making sure they attend the academic support opportunities listed above.

iPad Usage Policies

The iPad, an educational tool, is the property of the Sweetwater Union High School District. It may be confiscated and inspected at any time. The student should have NO expectation of privacy of any materials found on an iPad.

Sweetwater Union High School District iPads are provided as an educational tool for school work. While iPads may be used for personal purposes, it is first and foremost for use with school-related activities and assignments. Students are en-couraged to think of the school-issued iPad like they would any other school owned instructional device or material and take care accordingly.

Sweetwater Union High School District encourages students to take their iPad home daily for class work and to recharge the battery. All iPad rules and regu-lations apply at all times, both during the school day and at home.

Students must bring a fully charged iPad to school every day. Failure to bring an iPad or any other class material(s) does not release the student from their re-sponsibility for class work. If a student repeatedly fails to bring materials to class, including an iPad, the student will be subject to classroom/school consequences.

Sweetwater Union High School District makes no guarantee, written or im-plied, that materials on the iPad, including student work, will be safe from deletion or corruption, accidental or otherwise. Recording must be used appropriately in an educational manner. Sweet-water Union High School District reserves all rights concerning any recording and/or publishing of any student or staff member’s work or image. Students must obtain school permission to publish a photograph or video of any school related activity.

Counseling Services

619.397.2220Counselors:

Ms. Andrade Mr. Armas Ms. Sigarroa-Sanchez Mr. Taeatafa

All students and parents are encouraged to get to know their counselors. Our counselors welcome the opportunity to meet with students and parents, and are available for appointments during the school day. As a parent, it is recommended you meet with your student’s counselor at least once a year.

The main focus of our counseling program is to help students be successful in school. Counselors assist in plan-ning your academic program (classes and credits). Your coun-selor monitors your academic pro-gress toward meeting the require-ments of middle school. Your coun-selor can support you with per-sonal, social, and academic con-cerns as they relate to a successful middle school experience.

If a student has a problem, a question, or just needs to talk, he/she may request to see a counselor by filling out a Counselor Appointment Re-quest form. These can be picked up in the office or from a teacher. Students can stop by before and after school, or during lunch and nutrition break. Remember: If you have a question or problem, your counselor is here to help!

Anti-Bullying Policies

BULLYING IS REAL! BULLYING IS WRONG!

You might think bullying happens only to little kids. The truth is that being a bully or being bullied has no age limit.

Bullying is mean, cruel, and disrespectful. It’s NO WAY to treat anyone.

Being a bully or being bullied are not “just natural parts of growing up.” Put-ting others down or hurting them, or not feeling safe because of what someone is doing to you, is not healthy.

WHY  DO  PEOPLE  BULLY?

•They  want  to  hurt  others

•They  like  to  make  fun  of  people  who  are  different

•They  like  to  feel  powerful

• They’re  trying  to  move  attention  away  from  themselves

• They  think  it’s  funny  and  no  big  deal

BULLYING  CAN  INCLUDE:

•Hurtful  words

•Cruel  jokes  or  tricks

•Verbal  threats,  mean  looks  or  rude  gestures

•Pushing,  hitting,  and  pinching

•Making  people  do  things  they  don’t  want  to  do

•Picking  on  or  ganging  up  on  someone

•Ignoring  or  leaving  people  out

•Writing  nasty  notes

•Starting  rumors

47

Page 49: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

You must report bullying!! If you’re not sure it’s bullying—report it! You are mandated to report any type of bullying. You’re a victim if someone bullies you. You need to get help by reporting it to your teacher, assistant principal or other staff member.

You’re a bystander if you see someone being bullied. You need to help the vic-tim get help by reporting it. You need to show others that bullying is unaccept-able.

You’re a bully if you make fun of, put down, or deliberately hurt someone. Ask someone you trust to help. It takes courage to stop being a bully!!

Bullying will not be tolerated at BVM!

WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT BULLYING & PEER ABUSE

As a Teen…

•Know your school rules. Know your rights and responsibilities about bully-ing, harassment, and hazing.

•Show others that you think bullying is NOT OK.

•Get help if you are bullied or see someone being bullied.

As a Parent. . .

•Notice and talk about changes in your teen’s behavior

•Notice when your teen’s actions or words seem disrespectful of others

•Know the rules at your teen’s school about bullying, harassment, and hazing

As a Family. . .

•Stop bullying acts in your family

•Notice put-down humor in TV shows or music

48

Page 50: Student and Parent Handbook - Bonita Vista Middle Schoolbvm.sweetwaterschools.org/files/2014/07/BVM-iHandbook...bvm.sweetwaterschools.org "Sweetwater Union High School District programs

PEER ABUSE / BULLYING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Students and parents will be accountable for this behavior. Possible conse-quences include ARC, Saturday School, suspension, expulsion, and arrest.

CYBERBULLYING is also bullying and consequences will be issued!

Using any social media (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Kik, Snapchat, etc.) to har-ass, intimidate, demean, threaten, etc. is cyberbullying.

Parents are strongly advised to closely monitor all activity on all of their child’s electronic devices. If not possible or practical, the stu-dent should not be permitted to have a social media account.

REPORT BULLYING TO YOUR TEACHER, COUNSELOR, ASSISTANT PRIN-CIPAL, AND/OR ANY STAFF MEMBER IMMEDIATELY!

Health Services 619.397.2206

Nurse: Ms. Leonard

It is extremely important that the emergency information on file, including con-tact information and health issues, is updated frequently. Parents will be notified of accident situations and are responsible for transporting students except in cases of extreme emergency. A local emergency number must be included in case a par-ent cannot be reached. All grade 7 and 8 students must have up to date polio, teta-nus, Hepatitis B shots, a second MMR shot and a Varicella (chickenpox) shot or documentation of chickenpox disease.

Students who wish to see the nurse must have a pass from the teacher. The health office is for students who are ill or have been injured. Please do not send ill students to school. Students are not to use their cell phones to call par-ents to be picked up from school prior to checking in with the nurse, they must see the nurse first to be screened.

A student infected with any contagious disease may not attend school. If the student has a communicable disease (such as measles, mumps, or pink eye) the par-ent must contact the nurse to determine when the student may return.

Students may not be in possession of any medications, including over-the-counter medications. Under California law, when prescribed medication (includ-ing asthma inhalers) must be given during school hours, proper forms are to be completed by parents and the doctor. Only U.S. prescriptions by U.S. doctors may

BVM Cafeteria: 619.397.2227

Meals served at Bonita Vista Middle are professionally planned to meet the spe-cial nutritional needs of a middle school student. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this balanced and healthful option designed to optimize your stu-dent’s performance at school, rather than some of the less healthy options avail-able from off campus.

Breakfast: Served from 7:00 am to 7:55 am.

Nutrition Break: This is a ten-minute break which allows students and teachers a chance to relax and have a snack. This break is a privilege and can be revoked at any time due to poor behavior or failure to keep the eating areas clean. Students are to deposit trash in the trash cans rather than leaving it or throwing it on tables or on the ground.

Lunch: All students must be in the designated lunch areas. Students may bring their own lunches or food may be purchased at the Cafeteria or ASB. Stu-
