October 2013 Knowledge is the guiding light for the future. www.unicent.in www.unicent.in It is very exciting for me to share my views and thoughts with my young friends, teachers and parents. Life is busy but never too busy to update myself about the happenings of the school. As we grow, life teaches us many lessons. One lesson that I have learnt is that competition is becoming tough nowadays. So we have to be strong not only academically but also on the personality traits. We need to realize our full potential and aim for higher standards. We need to work harder and stretch ourselves for better achievements and greater satisfaction. When we see ourselves to be the best among the equals, the taste of success is exciting. Only when we reach that kind of a success, we will understand that we should always make the best use of the opportunities that we get. We should not spend energy on trivial things, and instead work consistently for our personal and professional goals with a certain amount of discipline. Adhere to the rules that you would want others to follow too. Be true to yourself. Believing in the philosophy of the institution and being part of the culture is what makes a society progressive and a nation advanced. All the best. It is a great opportunity for the school to bring out its first newsletter. It is in the spirit of education that we are all bound together for a common cause. The common cause is to ensure that our children are groomed to be independent, strong and free-willed adults with a sense of responsibility to themselves and towards the society. School is the microcosm of the society and also the seat of education. School prepares us for life and to be contributing members of the society. Education is not just about getting degrees. Therefore, understanding the meaning of education is critical. The dictionary definition of the word is of little practical value-the actual meaning we assign to a word is a belief and may not be an absolute fact. Ayn Rand says “The only purpose of education is to teach a student how to live his life-by developing his mind and equipping him to deal with reality”. What is learnt in school stays with us for a life time and so it is imperative that the school experiences should become the most cherished memories of children and that is what Unicent strives for. We also invite literary contributions from our parents which will enrich the learning experiences of our students. Looking forward to yet another partnership. Parents were encouraged to ask a lot of questions on how to handle the tantrums of children, nurture their children better and the partnership between home and school. The 2 forthcoming events for 2nd Term are a workshop on Art and Craft and a Musical Evening. Parents are invited for both with their friends and families. The Preschool Experience : Realizing the crucial importance of early childhood years as a period of rapid physical and mental growth, Unicent school has placed emphasis on its preschool programme, in which the school includes components of health, nutrition, preschool education and early stimulation. Fredrich Frobel, the originator of ‘kindergarten’ said that the preschool stage is an essential step in the whole ladder of educational experience. Maria Montessori advocated that the development of the young child is essentially a process of unfolding the child’s inherent potentialities to learn and acquire knowledge. Self activities by the children leads to a better and more permanent learning. Unicent’s curriculum and ‘activities for extended hours’ is based on the philosophy of ‘fun with learning’ and has shown good results. The feedback of the performance and progress in the learning efforts is given both to the student and the parent, because parents are important partners for the school in the journey of the children’s learning. The broad objectives of Unicent preschool programme are: To develop in children a good physique, adequate co ordination and basic motor skills -both fine and gross, through structured games, outdoor activities and sports. To develop in the children healthy habits and to build up skills necessary for personal adjustment such as dressing, eating, cleaning and so on. Eating etiquette and personal cleanliness are taught through rhymes, songs and practice in class. n THE CAKE OF LOVE: Today is my friend Pony’s birthday and I am making a cake for him. I need flour, butter, sugar, eggs and milk. We add sugar, milk and butter, eggs and mix well. We must weigh the flour and mix it with the previous paste. Mix all of them properly and pour it in a bowl. After applying ghee to it place it in an oven and leave it for sometime Now remove it from oven and see how a love cake has become ready for my friend Pony.

n MY LITTLE ‘BUBO’: The name of my pet dog is ‘Bubo’. I play with my dog after coming from school. I take my dog for a walk in the evening. It is white in colour. It is very little and so cute. I feed my dog with milk. I love my dog very much.

n MY FAVOURITE TEACHER: My favourite teacher is my class teacher. She teaches us both English and Science. She not only teaches us but also plays with us. She makes us feel happy and homely in the school. She explains every concept very well. She loves us very much.

n TRUE LOVE: Once upon a time , there lived three sisters named Shina, Tina, Meena. When they were 5 years old, their mother expired. After 25 years , one day their father wanted to know how much his daughters loved him. So, he asked Shina , ‘ How much do you like me’? She said ‘As much as the sky, father’. The father felt very happy and he asked the same question to Tina. She said, ‘As much as the land on earth father’. He felt very proud of Tina. When he asked the same question to Meena, she replied, ‘As the taste of salt’. The father was not happy with the answer and sent her out of the house. Soon, one day a king saw meena and married her and took her away to his kingdom. As the years passed by, Meena felt like meeting her family members. The king and Meena invited her family members for dinner. Meena’s father was still angry with her and did not talk to her. At the dinner table, Meena served dal to her father. When he tasted it he said, ‘What kind of a preparation is this? There is no salt in it’. Meena politely said, ‘Father! I wanted to tell you that my life without you is just like the dal without salt in it.’ The father realized his mistake and felt proud of his daughter.

n MEMORIES TO CHERISH….. It was year 2010, when I was in class II. I was very sad to leave my old school and join in a new school as I left my old friends back. My class teacher had been Ms. Parimala who made me feel very comfortable from the day when I joined the school. My memorable moment was on the first day of my new school. Seeing me sad and crying all the other students started teasing me but, my teacher called me and asked me the reason for being sad. I told the reason to her, then she asked me to consider her to be my friend and share my thoughts with her and she also warned the other children for teasing me. This made me to love the teacher and also the school and my classmates.

n THE TIMELY ACT: One night I was preparing for English exam. It was late, eleven o’ clock at night when I finished reading, I saw something strange. It was a burglar! I was so shocked. He was entering our neighbor’s house, as they were out of station. I quickly called the police and explained the same. The police van came silently without making sound and caught hold of the burglar who was about to burgle the neighbor’s house. My parents felt very happy, and then I went to sleep. When my neighbors knew about it they came to me and appreciated me for the timely act.

n WHAT EXPERIENCES TEACH US: I was in a shop looking for a gift for my mother; the vase which I was holding slipped from my hand and fell down. I felt very nervous and sad. Then I went to the owner of the shop and told him about the incident, he scolded me and asked me to pay a fine. I called up my mother, she was disturbed to hear that. She was very angry with me. The owner told not to enter the shop once again. After going home my mother and father scolded me a lot. Then I realized my mistake and asked for apology. They told me this should not be repeated again. I learnt to handle things carefully now. My parents are happy about it and presented a beautiful gift to me on my birthday.

n THE RIVER - AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY: I am a river. My name is Tista. People call me Tista river. I was born from a huge mountain called Kanchenjunga. I flow from Kanchenjunga and entire Sikkim. Tista is a village in the Sikkim state. I flow from Kalimpong, Trung Ki and the entire West Bengal border and flow from deep valleys of mountains and hills. In these places people use me for many purposes like drinking, cooking and for washing clothes as well as giving water to the fields. I love being amongst all the people. Then I enter Assam where I mix with the huge and mighty river Brahmaputra. Then I go to Bangladesh where they use me and even pollute me. I then gush past from Bangladesh and mix up with the mighty sea called the Bay Of Bengal. I am made salty and am lost in the sea.
