IN GENERAL It’s been said that

the person that won’t read has no advantage over the person that can’t read

• During the in-Class Problem Sessions, you will try to solve the assigned problems at the class room under my supervision. You can ask questions and get hints from me. But please do not forget to bring your calculators, pencils and erasers with your notebooks (I don't mean computers). During the in-Class Problem Session Text Book is free.

• I am available after the lecture hours. You can also make an appointment with me over internet via e-mail if you cannot attend office hours.

• After I go over a topic, at the weekend please try to solve some of the problems existing at the end of each chapter from the TEXT BOOK. You will need practise for the exam, otherwise you will be too slow and open to many silly mistakes.

• Please look at the syllabus and read the material given in the text book before class. It will be evident if students have not done the reading, I cannot do the reading for the student.

• Homework assignments are to be submitted in class on the due date before the lecture. No

credit will be given for a late homework.

• Assigned problems are based on the lecture from the previous lectures. During the

preparation of the Home Works, collaboration between the students is strongly advised.

• Success in engineering requires a clear thought process and well-organized problem solving. Your grade will suffer if your assignments are difficult to grade due to sloppiness, scribbles, cross-outs, and an otherwise disorganized and difficult-to-follow solution.

• Please turn off your cell phone(s) while in the class (Must be OFF, not silence or vibrating mode).

• Please give your full attention in class

• Be on time to class. Tardy is strongly discouraged.

• During examinations, you must do your own work. Talking or discussion is not permitted during the examinations, nor compare papers, copy from others, or collaborate in any way. Any collaborative behavior during the examinations will result in failure of the exam, and may lead to failure of the course and University disciplinary action.

OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE • Strength of materials teaches us about the behavior of materials and solid structures under a variety

of load conditions. In this course we will learn and apply the three fundamental keys of mechanics to the study of any solids analysis

EQUILIBRIUM STRESS- STRAIN RESPONSE ANALYSIS OF SIMPLE STRESS RESULTANT CASES DESIGN

• We will examine and describe how materials stretch, bend, twist, shake, buckle.

• We will consider the behavior of different materials (ductile vs. brittle).

• The stress-strain response of different materials will be examined.

• The stress within externally loaded bodies will be determined at a point. We will cover beam theory with applications to beam deflections and design.

• TOPICS: Concept of stress Stress and strain Axial loading Torque Pure shear and pure bending Stresses due to shear and bending Transformation of stress and strain Elastic stability Hooke’s law
