Ecstatic, the feeling I experienced uponopening an email from a fellow expatri-

ate in Saudi Arabic. She forwarded a letter tome that read: Congratulations on youracceptance to our Master’s program.

When this expatriate came to me foradvice on the Master’s program in her areaof interest over a year ago I was delighted tohelp. She applied to a few universities, andwas devastated when she received the firstrejection letter.

I assured her that rejections don’t meangiving up on your dreams. Receiving thisacceptance letter meant that she had theopportunity to flourish, gain employmentand escape words that haunted and hurt herfeelings over the years.

Those words were: “you are stupid, youare already forty- you are too old to go backto school, and you are fat and ugly no manwill ever want you”. Those were all wordsshe heard from her husband she had beenmarried to for over 20 years. Those wordsalmost mentally destroy her.

I am not a psychologist, but an educatorthat specializes in leadership. As an educatorand a leadership expert, I know that you can-not move forward in any endeavor if you arecrippled by a situation. Specifically in thissituation, it is words.

Using words to hurt your character, andto purposely break you down is called psy-chological abuse. According to the NationalCoalition Against Domestic Violence, psy-chological abuse is the malicious and explic-it nonphysical acts against a child, depend-ent adult, or an intimate partner.

This can include controlling the vic-tim’s freedom, and effectively acting todestabilize or isolate the victim. Variousstudies have demonstrated that psychologi-cal abuse can causes long-term damage to itsvictims’ mental health. To hold power overthe abused, the abuser will resort to a num-ber of tactics designed to hold one emotion-ally captive.

Words have power and if you sit backand feed into them, you will not succeed.Looking on the bright side and making thebest, even of a bad situation, allows you togain strength and with that strength, you canlead.

Parents are considered the leader bytheir children. If a parent tells his/her childthat he/she is worthless, don’t be surprised ifthat child turns out to be worthless.People respond to positive and encourag-ing words. They get more motivated and

perform better. I will stop here with a quote by Diane

Setterfield, the author of The ThirteenthTale: “There is something about words. Inexpert hands, manipulated deftly, they takeyou prisoner”.

“Wind themselves around your limbslike spider silk, and when you are so

enthralled you cannot move, they pierceyour skin, enter your blood, numb yourthoughts. Inside you they work their magic.”I say to you the reader, make words buildyou not destroy you.

On November 6, Americans voted forPresident Barack Obama to a second and

final term in office effective January 20,2013. Obama got 60,460,020 or 50% of thevote, while Romney scored 57,653,987 or48% of the popular vote.

President Obamaa was enthusiasticallysupported by African-Americans, Latinos andAsian-Americans because he championed ahealth care reform that would allow mostAmericans to get medical care and promisesto increase jobs and enhance economicgrowth by investing in refurbishing thenation’s infrastructure.

His opponent Republican Mitt Romneyfailed to put forward polices to impress thevoters especially African-Americans, Latinosand Asian-Americans.

Romney was never seen as the right per-son who would look out for minorities.

While Obama’s performance was notvery impressive, he was seen as the moretrustworthy person.

According to the people Obama is thebest of “two evils.”

With the elections behind us, PresidentObama's must now focus on the issues affect-ing the overall economy and the people.

We need strategies to grow the economy, while managing the fiscal operations. The USreported a trade deficit equivalent to $41.6Billion in September of 2012 and as of theend of October 2012 a total public debt of$16.261 trillion.

The “current account balance” is one keyindicator of how a country is doing economi-cally.

Obama must put in place long term andsustainable policies to address our immi-grants’ challenges.

As of July, Obama deported 1.4 millionillegal immigrants since the beginning of hisadministration—that’s 1.5 times more immi-grants on average than George Bush deportedevery month, according to official numbersfrom the Department of Homeland Security.

The President’s ‘Deferred Action’ foryoung immigrant must be replaced with per-manent policies to take these innocent chil-dren into citizenship.

Overall the people are expecting betterhealth care, security and job creation initia-tives during Obama’s final term in office.

Based on our system of governance,Obama will need the support and cooperationof both Democrats and Republicans in theCongress and Senate.

With the Republicans’ majority in Houseof Representative and the Democrats control-ling the Senator, it will be a challenging peri-od for Obama as the competing politicalforces get to work.

While, this will be a test of Obma’s lead-ership and his ability to work with his politi-cal opponents, both parties must demonstratetolerance and compromise as they seek towork for the people.

The possibility that the Republicans(GOP) could lose their power in Albanyreflects the decline of enrolled Republicansin New York and backlash to the sociallyconservative stances of the national party, state GOP officials and strategists said.

“For the Senate Republicans, there’s alot of overhang and a lot of downhill nega-tive residual pain that’s felt from the nation-al party being so out of step with state andnortheastern Republicans,” said DavidCatalfamo, a Republican strategist in Albanyand former communications director forGov. George Pataki.

In 2002, Pataki was the last Republicanto win statewide. Republicans lost seats in

state and federal offices on Election Day. Ifelection results stand, Republicans inJanuary will hold six of the state’s 27 seats inthe U.S. House, down from the eight seatsthey won two years ago.

In the state Senate, Republicans are onthe verge of losing their 33-29 seat majority.Democrats believe they are poised to pick upas many as four seats, but two races are tooclose to call.

Republicans lost at least five seats in thestate Assembly, where Democrats wereexpected to hold a 106-44 seat majority inJanuary.

State GOP chairman Ed Cox pointed tothe challenges the party was up against dur-ing 2012 elections. President Barack Obamareceived 63 percent of the vote in New York, the highest in any large state. The lastRepublican to be elected in New York wasRonald Reagan in 1984.

Democrats Continue to dominatelocal elections results

Congratulations are in order forPresident Barack Obama who was re-

elected for another term. Obama will bethe fourth Democratic president inAmericans history to serve two terms. Yesmy friends, Obama made history twice.

Miniroties and women voter turnout, boost his changes and surprisingly enoughhe also captured white and rural states likeIowa, New Hampshire especiallyPennsylvania and florida, romney was surehe had those states in the bag. This was alandslide win with more than 300 electoralvotes for President Barack Obama.

The President will continue to rain inpower, but he's not out of the woods withthe likes of Donald, Mitt, Paul and some ofthe richest people in the country whooppose his plan to increase tax on the 1%most richest americans.

The Republican party needs to jumpon Obama’s bandwagon to redeem theirparty’s credibility and show the world thatthey're not sore losers, but they are theUnited States of America.

If this country is to move forward asone nation under God there have to be lib-erty and justice for all. During the

campaign Obama endorced same-sex mar-riage,.He is the first president in history toadvocate on marrage equality.

We now have religious leaders whostand by the President on his endorcmentby saying if you are truly a man of Godthey should understand his decision onsame sex-marrige; "FOR GOD SOLOVED THE WORLD..." but I ask them;why did they take out God in the pledge ofallegiance?

Will they cut off their hands to spitetheir face?

The petitioners are former leader ofthe Opposition United Workers Party, RonGreen, and his colleague Maynard Joseph, who were defeated in Dominca's 2009 gen-eral election.

Earlier this year they challenged thenominations of the Prime Minister and hiseducation minister, Petter Saint Jean, tocontest two constituencies, on the basis thatthey held French citizenship.

YOUTH IN FOCUS

ASKDR KAREN GORDON

[email protected]

1-888-255-5064.

Dr. Karen Gordon is a licensed psychologist with 13 years experience, specializing in dis-ruptive behaviors in children and adolescents. If you have a question or concern, please for-ward by emailing her at: [email protected]

Many children are being bombarded bymedia coverage of the extent of sufferingand hardship in Haiti and other part ofthe world.

They have also witnessed frequentrequests by various organizations, schools, and churches, encouraging peo-ple to donate funds and supplies to helpthe Haitian people.

Initially, young children may notmake the association of how giving adollar at school could help save lives ofpeople in Haiti.

You can help develop charitablequalities in your child by first practicingwhat your preach.

Becoming involved in charityefforts is a great way of showing howhelping others is considered responsiblebehavior and actually brings positivefeelings of relief and peace in light ofsuch a tragedy.

Many young children may becomeanxious as a result of, frequently hearingabout or seeing vivid images of suffer-ing; it is always a great idea to limit thisexposure.

However, children can also get asense of empowerment that comes fromfeeling that they made a difference in thelives of those who are less fortunate.Particularly for young children, discussthe differences between Haiti and theUnited States in regard to tangibleresources, such as hospitals and money.

This should deepen your child’sunderstanding of how natural disasters(earthquakes) could further destroy acountry even after the earthquakes haveended.

On the other hand, adolescents maybe more directived and want to assist, butmay not know where or how to begin.

Parents mistakenly assume theyhave little influence on their teenagers, but this just applies to their choice inpeers and music.

In other areas, such as religion andpolitical beliefs, parents have consider-able influence on teens’ values andbeliefs.

Thus, get involved and encourageyour teenager’s desire to find an organi-zation that interests him/her.

For example, your teen might preferto donate to a more “hip” foundationthat’s featured on a music channel or thatis organized by a famous musician orrapper.

In addition, they may want to donatethrough text or their school rather thanan organization you are involved with.

Remember, the important thing isthat they are interested in affecting theirworld in a positive way.

You can always influence their criti-cal thinking skills by helping them findout information on the charity such as,the percent of proceeds that go to Haiti orwhat the organization buys with themonetary donations.

Just days after a 15-year-old high schoolfreshman in Staten Island leaped to herdeath in front of a train after being repeat-edly harassed by classmates, the FlatbushSeventh-Day Adventist Church's FlatbushStars Pathfinder Club held an Anti-Bullying Parade and Fair.

Parade participants also handed out ananti-bullying resource guide listing onlineand local resources that offer information, lessons and presentations on bullying andbullying related topics.

For some of the young marchers, theissue of bullying was very immediate.Ashley Alexander, for instance, a sixthgrader at I.S. 239, said that a friend and shewere going up the stairs when two seventhgrade girls pushed them down the stairs,

grabbed their stuff and threw it on the floor.Phylicia Samuels, a fifth grader at

Fahari Academy Charter School, told of afrightening bullying incident her first dayat school. "This girl was being meanbecause she was jealous of me because Idid all my work and everything," Phyliciasaid. "She started calling me bad words andstarted pushing me. Then she took my bagand threw it down the stairs into thegarbage."

It was hearing about incidents like thisthat inspired Delroy Cooper, Dir. of thechurch's Pathfinder Club, and AuthrineGordon to organize this anti-bullyingparade and fair. "Our mission is to unite ourcommunity and have a positive impact onour youth while we prayerfully hope tostop the violence in our schools and neigh-borhood," Cooper stated.

Following the parade, the FlatbushSeventh-Day Adventist Church's pastor,Richard Cahhoun, made everyone feel wel-come in the church's large meeting roomwhere parents and children were able topick up safety information provided by theNew York City Fire Dept, listen to severalspeakers, and enjoy a nice lunch.

BEAUTY CARE

Bronx master barbers (l-r) Robert, Brent and Andrew of Domer Groomersat a recent event in New York City.

How to PreventRazor BurnOuch. We've all had to suffer with razor

burn at one time or another. Razorburn is a fairly common skin condition thatoccurs after shaving when the skinbecomes inflamed, red, and irritated.

It can be painful, unsightly, and espe-cially bothersome forthose with sensitiveskin. With the rightprecautions, howev-er, it can be avoided. Here's how to preventrazor burn.

First, it is important to use the propershaving technique. For additional protec-tion, follow my five tips for preventingrazor burn.

Exfoliate. Before shaving (after ashower, of course), scrub your face with afacial scrub or loofa to remove dead skinand bring out ingrown hairs.

Lubricate. Use a good shaving creaminstead of a soap or foam. Look for a creamrich in glycerin and coconut oil and free ofalcohol. Avoid products with menthol, which can numb the skin and make it hardto determine if you're experiencing razordrag. For those with especially sensitiveskin, a pre-shave oil can work to furtherreduce razor drag.

Stay Sharp. Always use sharp blades.A dull blade is one of the leading causes ofrazor burn. To make sure you've always gotthe sharpest blades possible, replace thecartridge every five to seven days. To pre-serve the blade, dip your razor in alcoholafter the final rinse. Rinse your blade oftenusing cool water to remove shaving cream, oils, and whiskers.

Go Lightly. Shave with the grain todecrease the odds of irritation and inflamedskin. When shaving, avoid pressing downtoo hard on the blade and shave using shortstrokes. Avoid passing the blade over thesame area more than once as each passshaves off a small layer of skin.

HAIR CARE TIPFind a shampoo that lathers less. Sudsy doesn’tnecessarily mean clean—sometimes, it meansthe opposite. Shampoos that lather too much areoften overloaded with moisturizing products, which can leave build-up in your hair, making itlook and feel dirtier quicker. So opt for a sulfate-free formula.

LIFE STYLE

Dear Divine Diva:

Before we went on vaca-tion, we trusted our 15-

year-old neighbor "Mia" tofeed our cat, take in themail and water the plants.

While we were away, she invited some of herfriends and their friends toour home. Some of themshe knew by their nick-names and only for a shorttime.

When Mia's parentslearned about the party, they forbade her to go. However, she failed tomention she had left ourdoor unlocked for strangersto enter. It was obviouswhen we returned that peo-

ple had been there becausethings were out of placeand garbage was leftbehind.

We're missing about$100 worth of beer andliquor, $50 in change and$150 in old coins. Miaclaims she doesn't knowwho was there, and herfriends aren't being honest.

I'd like to get the policeinvolved. Mia, her parentsand my husband think I'm"unfair" for wanting toinvolve the police. I believea crime has been committedand don't understand whyI'm being treated like thebad guy when I'm the vic-tim. The police have told

me Mia would not get intotrouble as long as she coop-erates. Am I overreacting?

- CK, Mount Vernon

Dear CK: I don't think so. The partyanimals who invaded yourhome are guilty of trespass-ing and theft. You should becompensated for anythingthat was taken and thoseresponsible held account-able. Now that the "kids"have seen where everythingof value in your house islocated, you could be fur-ther victimized. You did theright thing in informing thepolice.

Relationship is one of the most importantkey areas in our life. Almost everything

we do involves a relationship – in our familylife, in business dealings, at work, in thesocial circle, with friends and so forth.

It is very essential for us to find out whoall the important people in our life are andhow to have harmonious relationships withthem.

So often we try our level best to control, manage and change others; however, theresults are negative by far. People normallydon’t change unless they want to and arecommitted towards the change. Really speak-ing, you just cannot change anyone exceptyourself.

When you change yourself, the worldaround you also changes automatically and atleast 70 % of your problems, in terms of rela-tionships, get resolved.

Criticism: Whenever we criticize some-one, we stop our ability to take a clear look atthe situation. Criticizing is very harmful, because whenever we call someone arrogantor useless for example, we start seeing thatperson as arrogant or useless.

Our mind, unconsciously or subcon-sciously, keeps on picking up and finding outthose negative traits in that person. Thus, webecome unable to deal with that person as aunique individual.

Blaming: Blaming is also very harmful. When we blame someone else for the prob-lems in our life, we become a passive victimof circumstances and it becomes very diffi-

cult for us to change our situation. Manyrelationships are ruined by people who blametheir partners when things go wrong. Theytake little responsibility for their problems. When something goes wrong at home or atwork, they try to find someone to blame. They rarely admit their own problems, faultsor mistakes.

Acceptance: We must stop trying tochange others, as there is enough scope forchange in us. No one is perfect; hence, thereis a lot of room for improvement in us. Acceptpeople as they are and not as you wish theywere.

Don’t expect them to behave the wayyou want. As a matter of fact, the best thing isnot to expect anything from anybody. I knowI am asking too much, but that is one of theways to happiness. Be a little detached, if notcompletely.

Thanksgiving Food Guide

There is an abundance of deliciousfoods available during the holidays. However, this does not mean you

should eat every option available to you. Portion size and good selection is key.

Eat the lean parts of whatever meat youchoose for Thanksgiving.

Choose foods cooked with less fat andsugar, and foods with several vegetablesand fruits. Taking small portions of thefoods you eat will reduce your chances ofover eating.

DO NOT EAT MORE to be polite toyour guest! You do not have to show yourappreciation to your guest by taking bigportions of their food preparations. If youare offered more, decline politely andexplain you want to eat in moderation tomaintain a healthy weight.

Choose fruits if available at desertsand if you must have a pie TAKE ASMALL PORTION OF PIE. Indeed, youdo not want to gain excess weight to theextent that once the spring and summerseason comes you are in dire need of los-ing weight.

REMEMBER, making smart choicesduring the holiday festivities will helpkeep unwanted weight off and allow youto maintain a healthy body weight.

Maintaining a healthy weight and anoverall healthy lifestyle will reduce yourchances of getting chronic diseases such asobesity, type II diabetes, and heart disease.

The time has come when landlords andprospective tenants in New York City

be fully aware of the mode of operation ofunethical real estate agents and the observ-able increase in the number of individualsacting in the capacity as licensed agents.

Many realtors are now united in theirefforts to abolish fraud and restore profes-sionalism to, and respect for the real estatebusiness.

Landlords and prospective tenantsneed to understand the current corrupttrends. They must constantly reject theadvances of unscrupulous and unlicensedagents, this will purge the community ofcorruption and protect unsuspecting land-lords and tenants against fraud and decep-tion.

How do these unlicensed and unethicalagents proceed in victimizing landlords andprospective tenants?

The deceptive agents solicit listingsand often rent apartments without providingproof of their affiliation with a licensed realestate brokerage entity. Landlords andprospective tenants must, at all times, demand a copy of the license of the broker-age firm, a business card with the name, address, and telephone number of the bro-kerage firm.

And most importantly, the agent mustshow a NYS real estate picture identifica-tion. Do not do business with agents whocannot produce a NYS real estate pictureidentification, do not provide them withapartment listings and do not rent apart-ments from them. A fraudulent realestate agent and unlicensed agents will notproduce any of the above documents. It isimperative that as landlords or prospectivetenants that you see and confirm the validi-ty of those documents before listing yourapartment or home with an individualclaiming to be a licensed real estate agent.

Landlords and prospective tenants, beaware!, unlicensed and unethical real estateagents will find excuses for not having acopy of the brokerage firm license, and theywill not be a willing to produce a NYS realestate picture identification.

In order to be victorious against thearmy of unlicensed agents and corrupt

agents, prospective tenants must remembernot to pay a fee to real estate agents whocannot produce proof that he/she is alicensed real estate broker. The fee for serv-ices rendered must be paid to a licensedbroker, not to a licensed agent.

In contrast, professional real estateagents will readily produce proof of theiraffiliation. They will be quick to show theirNYS real estate picture identification, andoften, they will extend an invitation to theircustomers and clients to visit the brokeragefirm principal of branch office. The fraudu-lent agents will do business in their car oron the street.

Lets unite in the struggle against fraudand deception in the real estate business. Itstime that we protect the publicagainst the ravages of so many unethicaland unlicensed real estate agents.

-Realtors in the public interest.

Now that the United States 2012Presidential elections are over the

campaign for the most intense election tobe conducted on planet earth continues.“Who will you cast your vote for?

The Candidates: The Lord JesusChrist who is holy, just, true, righteous, full of love, mercy and compassionaccording to the Bible and Satan that liar, destroyer and killer, called the “devil”according to scripture.

The Issues: You are a sinner- “For all have sinned, andcome short of the glory of God” (Rom.3:23). A holy God cannot allow you intoheaven until your sins are confessed andremoved.

Also, you have a never-dying soulwhich is going to be either eternally savedin heaven or eternally lost in hell (Math.25:46).

You see, if you accept Him today, youwill be saved (John 3:16-17) but if youreject Him it mean that you choose to go tohell and GOD has no choice but to sendyou there. “How shall we escape, if weneglect so great salvation” (Hebrews 2:3)

The Promises: 1) Cleansing –“The blood of Jesus Christcleansed us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). 2) Eternal Life – “The Gift of God is eter-nal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” 3) Peace – “Therefore being justified byfaith, we have peace with God.” (Romans5:1) 4) Freedom – “Christ Jesus hath made mefree from the law of sin and death.”(Rom.8:2)

5) Power– “God the Holy Spirit lives in allbelievers to help, guide, and empowerthem (Ephes. 1:13) and an Inheritance thatfadeth not away, reserved in heaven foryou” (1 Peter 1:4)

The Decision: You know the issues. You know

what’s been promised. Now you musteither cast your vote for JESUS by repent-ing of your sins and placing your trust inHim or cast your vote for Satan and don’tbe deceived into thinking that there is athird choice.

There is no other way. Jesus said, “Iam the Way, the Truth and the Life: noman cometh unto the Father, but by Me.

Reader, face this vital matter rightnow, look up the scriptures and weigh thefacts carefully and soberly before you castyour vote. I urged you to vote for JESUSthe “Giver of Life Party Candidate” and tochase Satan away from your polling sta-tion.

Finally, your heart is your polling sta-tion and your vote will be counted andpublished on judgment Day. Vote nowbecause after death is your judgment.
