Sustainability News
Our Resource Smart Journey
Our resource of focus this term is Water. Fresh water is a
precious resource. By saving water at school and at home we
can reduce our water bills and improve the health of our rivers and creeks.
Here at SPS we are wising up our water use by enlisting the help of the School
Water Efficiency Program, otherwise known as SWEP. Since
2014, SWEP have been helping to monitor our water usage and
provide us with easy to interpret data. This has encouraged us to
become mindful of our water consumption, identify leaks and call
in the plumber to help when the need arises!
The best ways we can save water at school are by making sure
all taps are turned off and by reporting any dripping taps or
constantly running toilets to the office.
It’s also important to send your child to school with a full drink bottle of water. Not
only does this give our body the fluids it needs to operate, this also reduces the
amount of water we use at school and prevents water wastage when using the
bubble taps.
Here is our current SWEP data...
Stay tuned for more sustainability news!

Friday the 26th of May is…..…
SPS
Water Day
Help us to celebrate water by sending your child to school with a full drink bottle of
water. Students will be participating in a range of activities that will help to re-
mind us to save water.
What could you do at home with your child to teach them about this precious
resource?
As part of Education Week 2017, Strathaird Primary School will be taking part in an
afternoon of activities inspired by this year’s theme: Healthy Mind, Healthy Body on:
Friday 26th May Year levels will take part in a range of games, craft activities and workshops designed to
impart tools and strategies to our students aimed at developing:
Resilience, and Mindfulness,
and managing: Stress and Anxiety .
Activities will differ across year levels and range from: mindful meditation, yoga, making
stress balls and deep breathing tools, as well as look at anger management, coping
strategies, sensory release and developing growth mindset. Students will have the
opportunity to explore the value of giving compliments and expressing gratitude.
We hope the day will provide rewarding, practical and beneficial experiences for all our
students and will work hand-in-hand with our welfare program and our work with
‘The Resilience Project’.
We are delighted to announce our success in applying for a $1,200 grant from
Telstra.
Telstra Kids funds the little things that can make a big difference to kids’ lives,
helping kids to play and learn. Our Telstra Kids grant will be used to purchase a new
class television and mounting set which will replace old equipment in one of our
portable classrooms.
Huge thanks to Kelvin Bennell from Telstra, who is relative of one of our Strathaird
Parent & Friends Committee Members for endorsing our application, which was
kindly prepared for us by Paula Dumesny from Strathaird Parent & Friends.
We are very excited to share in the million dollars the Telstra Foundation provides
each year to help kids across Australia to learn and play.
Great news! Telstra Kids grant
The kids say
Hooray!
The 2017 Attitudes to Schools Survey
We want our student to tell us what they think Our school is conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes
to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and
Training. The survey assists schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and
experience of school.
Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's
schooling experience.
This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school between Monday 5th of
June through to Friday 23rd June. The survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete and
occurs during your child's class time.
Students from Year 4 to 6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete
the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool.
The survey results will be reported back to the school in Term 3. Last year we used the survey
results to plan and implement The Resilience Project, to better support students and our
community.
The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are
known to influence student engagement and performance.
Students privacy is our priority Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an
assigned identifier that may be used by the Department to combine data for research purposes
only. Your child’s privacy and the confidentiality of your child’s survey responses will be
protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file.
