Dear FAO members,

I am very grateful for the FAO to which I have been a member for the last 26 years. And I am especially thankful for our annual meetings that not only provide the clinical pearls and business tips needed for healthy practice prosperity, but also the encouraging conversations and sensible wisdom that help to guide our path forward.

Please plan on attending the FAO meeting March 2-4 at the Tampa Renaissance International Hotel. Dr John Beattie has put together an excellent program which will include speakers, Dr. Lysle Johnston, Dr. Jay Bowman and Dr. Jeff Behan.

This year we are lucky to have the SAO annual meeting at the Tampa Marriott Waterside, October 5-7th. This will be the perfect opportunity to attend this most informative meeting with family and staff right here in Florida. Registration is easy, visit http://www.saortho.org/current-meeting and register online. I’ve looked over the list of speakers and I predict encouragement and enlightenment for both Doctor and Staff.

Now for some of my own words of encouragement, I can remember when I moved to Fort Myers in the summer of 1991, fresh out of residency and excited to finally start seeing patients as an associate. I focused my energy as a doctor treating patients and meeting dentists in the area to establish a referral base and make new friends.

It wasn’t until a few years later, when I owned the practice, that l learned what it meant to also be a business owner. I began to worry more about things like number of new patients, new starts, etc. and I listened more when colleagues would complain and forecast the demise of the orthodontic profession. I would hear things like “pediatric dentists are being taught to treat orthodontic patients” or “dentists are putting braces on patients in the mall”. But guess what? Our practices still grew!  Then came PPOs, capitation plans and MSOs.   Many of us were told that we needed to join or we would be “left out in the cold” but most of us didn’t join and guess what? Our practices still grew! Then came Invisalign and yes, many other dentists started doing orthodontics. But many of us started treating more and more adult patients because of Invisalign, and once again, our practices still grew!  It really wasn’t until the big recession that many of us saw our practices fall back. Now in 2017, we have new and perhaps more ominous challenges to our profession. I’m talking about six month smiles, Tele Dentistry and Smile Direct Club. We also have some Board of Dentistry issues involving what tasks can be delegated to our staff. The current laws do not consider many of the new technologies like scanned images or the ability to Skype.

As president of the FAO, I want you all to know that the FAO Officers are working on your behalf to meet and overcome these challenges so that not only are patients better protected and served, but we will be able to look back and once again say “but our practices still grew”!

Please read my recent letter to the Board of Dentistry on page 2.

Warmest regards,

John Richards, DDS, MS

• A Letter from Your FAO President

• AAOPACThe AAO Political Action Committee (AAOPAC) was established in 1994 under federal law to solicit funds from members of the AAO and make contributions to the campaigns of candidates for elected positions in federal government. PACs do not lobby, but the AAOPAC supports candidates whose views or past votes are consistent with the goals of the AAO.

As a nonprofit organization, the AAO cannot contribute to the campaigns of candidates. However, the AAOPAC can do so. The AAOPAC also serves to reinforce the goals of the dental profession by supporting candidates to whom other PACs have already contributed the maximum amount allowed by law. In instances where a particular issue would affect orthodontists more than other dentists, the AAOPAC can focus the specialty’s dollars effectively. Decisions such as which candidates to support are made by the AAOPAC Board of Directors, made up of representatives of the constituent organizations and liaison members from the AAO Board of Trustees and the Council on Governmental Affairs. During the 2015-2016 election cycle, $408,000 worth of voluntary contributions to AAOPAC (from U.S. members) was given to 106 candidates (76 House/30 Senate), and 97 of those won their elections. As you may know, AAOPAC is bipartisan and gives to candidates from both parties based on their proven support of issues important to the AAO. With new politicians in office since January 2017, we need to educate each and every one of the 535 members of Congress about the issues important to orthodontists. Whether it is the RAISE Act, small business protection, or student debt, we need to continue our legislative efforts in 2017. We cannot do that without our PAC, so to learn more about it, please visit https://www.aaoinfo.org/legal-advocacy/aaopac.

It’s important to support and to be involved with your state and local candidates. Your FAO PAC dollars help us support dental friendly candidates and to protect the dental profession. Please complete and return the enclosed form. Your FAO PAC Board:

Drs. TJ Albert, John Beattie – Chairman, Andy Brown, Jorge Coro, John Cordoba, Joe LeCompte, Shreena Patel and Steve Tinsworth.

DRAFT

Dear Florida Board of Dentistry members, As President of the Florida Association of Orthodontists, I am writing to you to address the issue of delegable tasks in Dentistry and specifically regarding the specialty of Orthodontics and the use of 3-D digital scanning technology. I must make clear from the beginning that the FAO has as its highest priority, patient safety, as well as, treatment excellence and reliability. Of secondary concern, is practice efficiency and affordability. We feel very strongly that with 2017 technology, our trained and certified clinical staff can safely, accurately and reliably capture digital scanned images under direct supervision. And, these images can be used both diagnostically and for the fabrication of intraoral appliances. We also strongly recommend that only the licensed Dentist be able to diagnose, treatment plan and place these appliances. It is at the placement appointment that the ultimate decision is made as to the accuracy of the appliance fabrication and fit. What we don't want to see is a licensed Dentist reviewing images on a computer screen and diagnosing and treatment planning without actually seeing the patient in their office. With these scenarios, the practitioner does not actually place the appliances and would have no way of knowing whether it was accurately fabricated. We feel this is an improper delegation and should be stopped immediately as it puts patients under great risk. Many other states have updated their laws and rules to keep up with the rapidly changing technologies. It is our hope and request that the Florida Board of Dentistry will consider doing this as well. Sincerely,John M Richards, DDS, MSFAO President

Friday, March 2ndrisk management for the Orthodontic Office: Preventing malpractice Claims 2:00pm - 4:00pm • 2 CEUselizabeth Franklin, Claims manager AAO Services, Inc Malpractice claims and regulatory complaints continue to be a risk for all orthodontists. Actual treatment problems, patient dissatisfaction, and a sense of entitlement within our society all serve to support patient claims, lawsuits, and dental board complaints. Learn how to practice defensively to protect yourself. The AAO Insurance Company is sponsoring a two-hour risk management program presented by a panel of three speakers experienced in investigating, evaluating, and appropriately resolving malpractice claims. Discussions will include such topics as obtaining effective informed consents; creating quality defensible records; terminating problem treatments early to minimize exposure, and more. AAOIC insureds who attend the entire 2-hour event will receive a certificate to present for 10% professional liability insurance premium discount.

Saturday, March 3rdClass II malocclusion, From Beginning to end8:30am - 12:00pm • 3 CEUsDr. Lysle JohnstonThe purpose of the presentation will be to point out that, from what is known, many of our most popular strategies and assumptions about the methods and timing of treatment are at best questionable and at worst, already known to be wrong: that future growth can be predicted, that extraction treatments (both two- and four-bicuspid) “distalize” the mandible and, in the process, cause temporomandibular dysfunction and unfavorable facial appearance; that an early, functional-appliance phase contributes something “extra” to a treatment outcome; that extraoral Class II traction targets the wrong jaw; that expansion treatments produce superior facial esthetics and are an effective substitute for premolar extraction; that condylar position and changes in condylar position can cause/cure temporomandibular dysfunction.

Developing your Leadership Trifecta: Your Community, Your Practice, Your Profession12:30pm - 2:00pm • 1 CEUThe FAO will host its second leadership development seminar that will focus on work-life balance, community involvement opportunities, AAO/SAO/FAO governance overview and education on other leadership programs that will enhance your development. Recommended reading and lunch will be provided. Attendance limited to 12.

everything but the Kitchen Sink... and on Second Blush 2:00pm - 5:00pm • 3 CEUsDr. Jay Bowman Wires and pliers, plastic and punches, scars and solutions, IIs and IIIs, fore and aft, fast and friction, chewies and positioners, quick fixes, horseshoes, monkey hooks, plus anchorage and anchors.  Everything from soup-to-nuts: an orthodontic travelogue through daily problem solving as the mother of invention.

Sunday, March 4thPlaying To Win: Keys to Consumer marketing8:30am - 12:00pm • 3 CEUsJeff BehanEveryone knows word-of-mouth (WOM) advertising generates the highest quality leads. Deliver an awesome experience and patients will flock to your door, right? But since the dawn of advertising, there have been countless stories that demonstrate this singular truth: a well-marketed mediocre product will outperform a better product every time. The best orthodontist can no more escape this reality than can the doctor whose brand is predictable mediocrity (think McDonald’s). Playing to win means standing out from the crowd so consumers can not only find you among the many choices, but will have a built-in bias to choose you. In this three-hour presentation, we will take a deep dive into contemporary ways to differentiate your practice, including:

• Social media ROI • Search engine visibility • Competing with Corporates • Getting Your Marketing Mix Right • Winning The Start Even Before The Consult

He will also share entertaining and informative “man on the street”-style interviews, demonstrating people’s understanding of the difference between dentists and orthodontists, the importance of online reviews, a new business model for succeeding with potential patients and much more.
