Sticking with God’s will in the matter
Matthew 5:3232 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the
ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and
whoever marries a divorced woman
commits adultery. NO divorced person can marry…
Matthew 19:99 And I say to you:
whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality,
and marries another, commits
adultery.”
Unless divorce was FOR adultery, one CANNOT divorce…
Romans 7:1-27:1 Or do you not know, brothers —for
I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives?2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her
husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.
EVERY divorce is sinful…
1 Corinthians 7:10-1110 To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): the wife should
not separate from her husband 11 (but if she does, she
should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and the
husband should not divorce his wife.
Divorce is ok as long as one doesn’t remarry
1. We proof-text for what we already believe
2. We let men’s law’s, judgments, culture confuse us
3. We take ONE passage and apply to ALL situations
Matthew 19:66 So they are no
longer two but one flesh. What
therefore God has joined
together, let not man
separate.”
What God joins no man should separate… Can, but shouldn’t
1 Corinthians 7:10-1110 To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord):
the wife should not separate from her husband 11 (but if
she does, she should remain unmarried or else be
reconciled to her husband), and the husband should not
divorce his wife.
1 Corinthians 7:2-52 But because of the temptation to sexual
immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The
husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For
the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the
husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one
another… so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
Fulfill one’s “duty”, not to withhold self from spouse
Matthew 5:3232 But I say to you that
everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground
of sexual immorality, makes her commit
adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman
commits adultery.
One CAN share the guilt of an adulterous mate
Malachi 2:16The LORD, the God of
Israel, says that he hates divorce, and him
who covers his garment with violence, says
the LORD of hosts. So guard yourselves in
your spirit, and do not be faithless.”
1 Corinthians 7:10-1110 To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord):
the wife should not separate from her husband 11 (but if
she does, she should remain unmarried or else be
reconciled to her husband), and the husband should not
divorce his wife.
1 Corinthians 7:13-1513 If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce
him. 14…15 But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In
such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to
peace.
1 Corinthians 7:10-1110 To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): the wife should
not separate from her husband 11 (but if she does, she
should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and the
husband should not divorce his wife.
Reconcile or remain unmarried
Roman 7:1-27:1 Or do you not know, brothers - for I am speaking to those who know the
law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives?2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her
husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.
Bound by the law, a restraint
Matthew 14:4
4 because John had
been saying to him, “It is
not lawful for you to
have her.”
If there is no adultery, it’s an unlawful divorce
Romans 7:2 For a married woman is bound by law to
her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the
law of marriage.
Matthew 19:99 And I say to you: whoever divorces his
wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
Death or adultery – the ONLY cause for re-marriage
Matthew 14:4
4 because John had
been saying to him, “It is
not lawful for you to
have her.”
Marriage is unlawful unless God allows

Divorce is unlawful unless God allows
Matthew 19:1010 The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a
man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”
Matthew 19:11-1211 But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive
this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so
from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the
kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”
Hebrews 5:8-98 Although he was a
son, he learned obedience through
what he suffered. 9 And
being made perfect, he became
the source of eternal salvation to
all who obey him,
