Dear Friends in Christ: We are so blessed that Saint John Vianney Parish is such a vibrant Catholic congregation that serves its members as well as the broader community. We strive to engage members by providing a prayerful environment that fosters learning and offers programs and services that enrich our faith formation. Your priests, parish staff, and parish leadership are truly grateful for your generosity, volunteer efforts, and stewardship during the past year. We are fortunate to have so many parishioners who give of themselves through the variety of ministries available to serve God and others, and via the financial gifts provided from the Saint John Vianney faith community. We invite you to review this 2013 Annual Report. As you review it, contemplate the ways that you and your fellow parishioners give to our community and each other. As you reflect on these aspects of your Catholic life, you will see the influence of your generosity and how it impacts all of us as joyful stewards of God’s gifts. As St. Paul wrote,

Let me say this much: He who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will reap bountifully. Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver.

(2 Corinthians 9:6-7) Which brings us to our theme for our 2014 Stewardship Renewal – We Live to Give of Self. Our annual report provides examples of the various ways in which the members of our parish are cheerful stewards of their gifts from God, sharing their Catholic faith. How will you Live to Give of Self in 2014? Perhaps through self-reflection or a simple prayer to the Holy Spirit, you will be guided to truly live and share your faith and joy in stewardship to our God. Many thanks and blessings,

Rev. Kenneth P. Knippel Maria M. Pascente Robert W. Scott Pastor Parish Council Chair Stewardship Chair

As the Sunday morning light streams through the stained glass windows of the sanctuary of Saint John Vianney parish, members of the living family of God stream through the front doors on their way to Mass. Many carry grocery bags full of food and dry goods that will go to food pantries in the area in support of the St Vincent de Paul Society, just one of many groups at SJV whose mission is to help provide for all of God’s children. In addition to the tangible gifts that are brought, a host of other spiritual offerings are given to sustain the work of our congregation. Many voices and hands work together, enhancing our celebration. Hospitality ministers smile and welcome all who arrive. We gather and musicians unite us in song – returning the musical gifts given them. During the Liturgy of the Word, a few people who have a special affinity for teaching the young gather our grade school children to give them a chance to hear and live God’s word in a special way. Today, two new babies will be baptized at Mass. Their parents and godparents have brought them to live as a part of our larger family where they will be loved, nurtured and encouraged to share the special gifts that God has given them. Before the baptism, the parents went to a class led by parishioners who helped to guide them for this day. Eucharistic Ministers come forward to help Father Ken or Father Philip distribute communion. Through them we truly become “one body, one spirit in Christ”. Mass ends, and we go forth in our busy lives to spread the good news of the Lord. Following the service, new families come to the orientation facilitated by more of our dedicated congregation. Last year over one hundred families became members of our larger family.

Hundreds converge on the school as Christian Formation classes begin. Our dedicated staff has recruited dozens of volunteers and trained them to spread our faith to the young people in our parish. Still others helped out during the summer for Vacation Bible School, a time of fun and spiritual growth for our grade schoolers. CF teachers prepare our young people for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion and confirmation, but more importantly for life as a faith-filled Catholic.

A new week begins and nearly five hundred students arrive for school. Skilled teachers are there to educate and guide the children, assisted by the invaluable work performed by numerous volunteers who help to keep our school running. They offer their talents as classroom aides, playground supervisors, coaches, scout leaders and advisors, and work on planning and fundraising projects. The activity center is a major connection to the parish for many of our young members. Sportsmanship, teamwork, fair play and community are ideas that are learned through the sports and activities run predominately by volunteers sharing their time and talents. Our playground is a busy place during school

time, but also serves the broader community as it is used by neighbors with small children. It is busy in the church offices and parish center as well. People gather for everything from exercise classes to AA meetings, from lifelong faith formation to support groups, from committee meetings to bible study, from office assistance to church decoration. And the work is not limited to the physical confines of SJV. Parishioners offer their gifts to help others in many ways. Guiding young couples as they prepare for marriage, visiting the homebound, serving at soup kitchens, participating in mission trips to help those in need – all done as return on the gifts and talents given to them. Young and not so young, wealthy and not so wealthy, healthy and not so healthy – we live to support and be supported by the community that is here.

Revenue Summary Parish revenue increased 7.65% over the prior year reaching in excess of $4.7 million. Many items contributed to this increase including the successful launch of the Cure D’Ars Annual Fund raising over $121 thousand, a wonderful expression of support for this new annual drive to continue our school’s commitment to educational excellence as well as providing tuition assistance. 2013 was a Bids for Kids year (a biennial school auction shown under Home & School), which netted nearly $145 thousand on record revenue of $228 thousand. The weather at this year’s festival was fabulous, contributing to a record revenue of $127 thousand. Thank you to all of the outstanding leaders and volunteers who make these events so successful. Stewardship offerings increased to nearly $2.2 million. We continue to be blessed with a generous and active faith community at Saint John Vianney and your financial support is most appreciated. Not to be overlooked are the innumerable hours that parishioners donate of their effort and to give back. We are sure that we achieved a record level. So many of you are active in our community: helping out in our parish ministries or through one of the many programs led by our Human Concerns staff and volunteers. School tuition and fees reached $1.27 million. Our school continues to benefit from strong enrollment, however we no longer have the class waiting lists of a few years ago. To keep our school strong and viable, we ask you to encourage those you know with school aged children to consider SJV. Lastly, investment income was up over $60 thousand on a year over year basis. While this line item is not budgeted due to swings in the market, up is better than down. Expense Summary Operating expenses increased over the prior year by 8.7% and ended at just over $4.7 million. School related expenses were up $102 thousand, which was not a surprise based on some planned expanded educational choices and offset by the support of the Cure D’Ars Annual Fund. The maintenance related expenses increased $113 thousand over the prior year as we tackled a few deferred items (including a renovated gym floor, teachers’ lounge, HVAC and boiler repairs) and expectations are for this category to be lower in next fiscal year. Maintenance expenses are consolidated for this summarized report, however each department (school, athletics, administration, etc.) is allocated their respective maintenance expenses for individual department budgets. Salaries and Benefits continues to be the major expense category representing approximately 63% of overall fiscal 2013 expenses (~$2.99 million). It should be noted that these expenses were up less than 3% ($85 thousand) over the prior year and only modestly over planned budget.

Capital Expenditures totaled $89 thousand and were related to a school bathroom remodeling project and a new telephone system. The reporting of these non-maintenance items caused the parish to show a $51 thousand deficit, versus a $74 thousand surplus in fiscal 2012. We have taken a new approach to budgeting for fiscal 2014 and have budgeted for another challenging year. Through thoughtful prayer and continued support we faithfully believe that as a parish we can achieve better than budgeted results for 2014. We are blessed with faithful parishioners who give generously and sacrificially of their time, talent and treasure. Thank you to the members of the Administrative Services/Finance, Building and Grounds, Technology, Athletic Association, Budget, Festival, Human Resources, and Parish Endowment Fund committees. We are fortunate to have strong leadership and dedicated staff that work well together. They have consistently demonstrated financial responsibility in ensuring your resources are used prudently, leveraged appropriately, and safe-guarded with the utmost care.

Everything we have is a gift from God.
