Welcome to Step One at CrossPoint Church. This class isdesigned to help you become more familiar with this faithcommunity and to extend an invitation for you to become a part

of what God is doing here! Over the next hour we will look at CrossPoint Church as awhole (part 1), individual campuses (part 2) and the mostimportant part… the individual just like you (part 3)! let'sbegin with that 30,000 footview and ask ourselves thequestion who/what is

    CrossPoint?

Our History: CrossPointbegan as Westbrook BaptistChurch August 23 1970, bornas a mission church of 1stSouthern Baptist Church, inHutchinson. Originally thecongregation met in an oldfarm house holding their

worship services in a large screened in porch. Eventually, thathouse was sold and was moved out into the country, and the2005 North Hendricks facilities were constructed.

    • In February 2006 Venue 302 was launched and our faithcommunity began the multi site journey.

    • In 2007 a campus was established in Sterling, Ks, as thefirst campus outside the city of Hutchinson.

    • In September of 2009 Salina, Hays and Great Bendbecame CrossPoint Campuses.

    • Since then the Crosspoint family has grown: Kingman,Concordia,Ulysses, WaKeeney, Plevna and Manhattan (atthe time of this printing).

The CrossPoint Vision: As God poured out His blessingon our faith community, we developed a vision for fulfilling thegreat commission where we lived.

Matthew 28:18 – 20 And Jesus came and said to them, “Allauthority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Gotherefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the

name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teachingthem to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am

with you always, to the end of the age.”  • The goal of every Crosspoint Church is to _________ their

community by giving 10% of the population back to God.  • And, as a network of churches, our goal is to ___________

our state by giving 10% of Kansas back to God.  • For example, the 2012 data for Hutchinson Kansas shows a

population of 41,962. So, the goal for Crosspoint Hutchwould be to have a congregation of ___________.

    • And, the population of Kansas in 2012 registered at 2.8million people. So, the goal for reaching the state of Kansas

means that crosspoint would reach _______________. These are what we call “God-sized” goals. He’sthe only one that can accomplish themand when He does, all glory willgo to Him!

Multi site: Although it wasn’t the plan, it soon became astrategy. Crosspoint became a multisite congregation, meaning wewere one church in many places. But, even that term has variousmeanings and definitions as you see churches doing the variety ofthings that churches do.  For us, multi site means we arenot a church __________ multi-sites, but we are a church __________ multi-sites.

The Crosspoint Hutchinsoncampus may have been the firstand may be the largest, but it still joins together with everyCrossPoint campus as an equalpartner trying to fulfill our visionand mission. Additionally, multi site means that each location expresses its ownunique giftings and identity, but we are tied together in severalways:

    • our unified ____________ (see above)  • our ____________ strategy (see below)  • our weekend ____________

    • elements that we refer to as CrossPoint ____________ CrossPoint recognizes 3 distinct groups:1) CrossPoint ___________ - using CrossPoint materials but not

truly connected 2) CrossPoint ___________ Churches - using CrossPoint

materials and loosely connected  3) CrossPoint ___________ - fully connected part of CrossPointChurch! When you go from one campus to another, it will look different andbe unique to that location, but you will definitely know you are at aCrosspoint campus. This is what it means to be one church inmany places.

CrossPoint DNA: There are a few phrases that permeate ourchurch culture. Understanding them will help you understand what itmeans to be a CrossPointer, and while it is not a complete picture ofeverything we are about, it should point you in a direction to

understand who we are!  Invest and __________________- The expectation of every activeCrossPointer is to be sharing their faith at two levels. Investing ispouring into the life of someone who is disconnected from churchand/or the Lord in hopes of building a bridge to them. Inviting isactively praying for and verbally sharing opportunities with someoneregarding CrossPoint Church and/or the Lord. Specifically, eachCrossPointer should have at least one person they are investing inand one person they are currently inviting. We are a church of foundpeople who find people!  Who's the church? __________________! - A regular reminder thatthe church is not an institution but a body of believers. EveryCrossPointer who has Jesus in their life is “The Church.” Churchattendance is a positive. It should be an encouraging, strengthening, and regular discipline. However, real maturity begins when you takewhat you have learned and apply it in the raw and real of life. You don't get to steer the boat unless you're willing to row -

Leadership cues and directional statements for CrossPoint Churchare only accepted from people who are actively in the ministry.Statements from armchair quarterbacks and shouts from the pewsdo not carry much weight at CrossPoint Church.

__________________ as you are - Weekend services, specifically, and CrossPoint Church activities, generally, are designed to be asopen and friendly as possible. Dress codes, social expectations, andassumed spiritual behaviors are sacrificed for the sake of

connectivity with anyone outside the church. There is no entranceexam at CrossPoint Church. No level of spirituality or social standingis necessary to connect with Jesus, so, it shouldn’t be necessary tobe included in a fellowship. Bottom of the barrel is where most of usfinally turn around, and CrossPoint Church is filled with people whohave pushed off from the bottom.

Opt out of __________________ and you opt out of pastoralcare - CrossPoint Church is a large church that does not dependon numerous paid staff. The pastoral ministry of the church isdependent upon the Grow Group. Those in a Grow Group canexpect to find prayer support, benevolence ministry, Christian

encouragement, accountability and discipleship. Church visitationand care during times of need like funerals/weddings/hospitalizations is the responsibility of the individual Grow Group. A church for the __________________ - Swapping sheep is notthe vision of CrossPoint Church. There is an intentionality tobecome a church that meets the needs of those who have neverconnected with a church, or have been turned off in the past andwalked away. Because of that, much of what CrossPoint Church

says and does will reflect a methodology that differs from thetraditional church. We have no desire to coddle the believer, butinstead ask them to sacrifice for the sake of the lost.

We are an __________________ church - Titus chapter 2 is themodel for how Christian education was originally intended. Oldermen teach younger men and older women teach younger women. While CrossPoint Church still utilizes children’s ministry and studentministry, we are also in the practice of connecting our adults andour minors for the purpose of bringing them up in the faith.Additionally, we believe the culture has prolonged childhood to adysfunctional level, and CrossPoint Church embraces an annualrite of passage to celebrate children moving into young adulthood.

The answer to __________________ is Grow Group - Theconveyor belt for all things related to discipleship is the Grow Group.Rather than connecting a myriad of programs and classes, allCrossPoint Church emphases should be funneled into the Grow

Group: singles ministry, softball teams, support groups, etc. Ideally,CrossPoint Church is not a church with Grow Groups, it is a churchof Grow Groups. We're liberal in our __________________ but conservative in ourtheology - CrossPoint Church leaders must be willing to embracerisky practices while simultaneously holding onto conservativebiblical values for the sake of advancing the church. Normative, forus, is Scripture. Everything else is negotiable. You can be right or you could be __________________ - As aleader, you will be confronted often with the realization of how things“should” be. While that realization might be true, it is not helpful.Even if someone should be doing something or things ought to bedifferent, it is the responsibility of the leader to do what needs to bedone and become effective.  Everybody say __________________! - At a weekend service it’snearly a guarantee that you will be asked to echo something back

the speaker requests. The purpose is to reaffirm what is beingtaught, to keep every individual invested in the group teaching, andto display unity.

Go ahead and do it… “everybody say everybody!”

Our Mission: With our vision firmly established, let’s answerthe question, “what is our mission?” In essence, how do we get

stuff done? The methodology of a crosspoint campus can besummed up in three simple phrases:

    ___________ God ___________ Up ___________ All

These three phrases indicate a spiritual journey that we oftendepict as climbing a mountain. Someone who is disconnected from

God and his church first needs to learn to love God, beginning their journey at the foot of the mountain.

Then, to fully enjoy life found in Christ they need to grow up,making their way up the face of the mountain.

But, real spiritual maturity is never found until you learn to serve all, which is reaching the summit of the mountain and having learnedhow to climb going back down to help others reach the peak. That’s why every crosspoint campus has activities, programs andexercises designed to help individuals on this epic lifetime journey! Each of these three phrases contain a couple of mile markers toshow that were making progress on the journey.

Salvation: the fundamental need of every human being is tobe rescued from our own brokenness. Our highest goal is toglorify God with our life.

Neither of these things can happen unless God, by His_____________, chooses to intervene. Thank God that He did! The story of salvation is beautiful, simple yet complicated andstretching from the beginning of the Bible to the end. However, agood summary of what God has done for us can be found inRomans 6:23. 23  For the wages of sin is death, but the

free gift of God is eternal life in ChristJesus our Lord.

If you have never formally asked Christ to forgive you of yoursins, and never formally asked to follow him as Lord andSavior… Let me encourage you to do so now. This prayer isnot magic, and it’s not the prayer that changes anything. It’s

the God you’re praying to that can make all the difference inthe world. Additionally, this prayer isn’t the end… It’s thebeginning of the faith walk we all must live:  “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for reaching outto me. I admit that I am a sinner and have done things thathave broken your heart and Your law. Thank You for sendingYour Son to pay the price for me. I ask you to take Hissacrifice in my place and forgive me. In return I will followJesus as my Lord and Savior for the rest of my days. In

    Jesus name, amen.”

Baptism: Baptism is a ________________ of what hashappened spiritually. Going into the water we symbolize ourdeath to sin and association with Christ on the cross. Comingout of the water we symbolize our new life in Christ and ourassociation with his resurrection.  We should each be baptized because Christ ____________ it.

Matthew 28:Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son andof the Holy Spirit, 20  teaching them to observe all that I havecommanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the

end of the age.”  We believe __________________ calling themselves a

believer should be baptized.  “So those who received his word were baptized, and therewere added that day about three thousand souls...” Acts 2:41 We believe that proper baptism is done by________________. The Greek word baptizo means, “to immerse or dip underwater”. Be baptized as soon as you have _____________________!

“Those who believed...were baptized...that day!” Acts 2:41 We believe the most important factor in baptism is thesequence of events:

    L_________________ T___________

Can my family be baptized together? Yes! If each family member understands fully the meaning ofbaptism, and each one has personally placed his/her trust inChrist for salvation. Young children who wish to be baptizedare asked to meet with our Minister of Children for a pre-

baptism conversation. However, it is important to remember that baptism is apersonal statement of faith, not a family tradition. It is usuallynot wise to delay your baptism while waiting on other familymembers to accept Christ, particularly children. This puts anundue pressure on them, and delays your obedience. What should I wear when I am baptized? Modest swimwear with a t-shirt over it will make you andeveryone around you comfortable. Remember to bring towelnecessities for cleaning up afterwards!  Will I have to say anything?  No, your testimony will either be written out and/or filmedmaking sure you can enjoy your own baptism. CrossPoint staffwill guide you in this.  Special Needs? Please contact anyone on the church staff if you have anyspecial needs pertaining to your baptism.

Who are we trying to reach: One of the reasonCrossPoint looks like it does, acts like it does and is what it is, isdue to the fact that there is a targeted demographic in mind foreverything we do.

To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I

have become all things to allpeople, that by all means I

    might save some. 1Corinthians 9:22

Our objective is to reachpeople and keep them movingtoward spiritual maturity byencouraging personal spiritualcommitments leading themdeeper into this faith community.

    Community:

    Crowd:

    Congregation:

    Committed:

    Core:

In a nutshell: CrossPoint targets the most unchurched group inAmerica: 18 to 30-year-olds, young families, in debt, andoverextended. We obviously would like to reach everybody withthe gospel of Christ, but the reason we do what we do is thisdemographic is the least churched group in America.

How Do Church Decisions Get Made: Thestructure of the church should not be determined by culture, business practices, or even denominational traditions. Thepattern of decision making (called polity or governance) atCrossPoint is biblical in its model… so, what does that mean?  1. THE CHURCH IS A __________________ Acts 2:42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’teaching and the fellowship… 2. THE CHURCH IS A __________________ 1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.

    3. THE CHURCH IS A __________________ Romans 12:4 For as in one body we have many members, andthe members do not all have the same function, 5 so we,though many, are one body in Christ, and individually membersone of another.

    4. THE CHURCH IS A __________________ 15 Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do youlove me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you

know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

The Ephesians Factor Ephesians 4:11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, theevangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip thesaints for the work of ministry, for building up the body ofChrist,

Jesus is in _________, pastors __________ and teach, thecongregation ministers and _________… we are the church.

In a nutshell, day to day decisions are made by church staff.Lay leadership serve in key areas, and the entire churchgathers at least annually to approve the church budget, to buyproperty and build buildings, change the church constitutionand the hiring/firing of the senior pastor.

What does CrossPoint believe: Understanding whatCrossPoint believes is simple. We have a conservative theologyand a liberal methodology. But, it may be important to exploremore than that. So, let’s take a look at our beliefs.  1. In essential beliefs — we have unity. 2. In non-essential beliefs — we have liberty. 3. In all our beliefs — we show charity. As a church we are not a creedal people. Several of thedocuments that have been created by and used in the universalchurch over the last several hundred years are fantasticstatements of faith. But, CrossPoint has chosen not to adopt anydocument or collection of documents as a statement of our faith. Instead, we would like to point to Scripture and simply say webelieve every word of the Bible and hold it as ourstatement of faith. However, “The Baptist Faith andMessage ” is a collection of

belief statements that mostclosely adheres to thinking atCrossPoint.

Some Highlighted Beliefs: Though we do not desire for this tobecome a document outlining our theological beliefs, here are afew highlighted beliefs that often are the subject ofconversation. The Bible As Sole Authority All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. 2Timothy 3:16  Since God’s Word is the only completely reliable and truthfulauthority, we accept the Bible as our manual for living. Our firstquestion when faced with a decision is “What does the Bible

say?” We practice daily Bible reading, Bible study, and Biblememorization. The Bible is the basis for all we believe.

The Autonomy Of The Local Church  And he is the head of the body, the church. Colossians 1:18  Christ is the recognized head of our church, not any person, group, or religious organization. While recognizing the value ofassociating and cooperating with other groups of Christians, webelieve every local church should be self-governing andindependent from any denominational control.

Priesthood Of Every Believer But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, apeople for his own possession, that you may proclaim theexcellencies of him who called you out of darkness into hismarvelous light. 1 Pet. 2:9  The Bible teaches that every Christian is called to “full time”Christian service, regardless of his or her vocation. We practicethe truth that every believer is a minister by encouraging everymember to find a place of service and ministry. Every believerhas direct access to God through prayer and Bible reading.

    20/28

Giving Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of thefruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord. Leviticus26:30  We practice tithing for the support of Christ’s body, the church,as God commands. We recognize that giving 10% of ourincome is the Biblical standard of giving.

Immersion Baptism Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were alsoraised with him through faith in the powerful working of God,who raised him from the dead. Colossians 2:12 We practice baptism by immersion under water — the wayJesus was baptized, and the way the Bible commands.

Spirit Lead Living (Jesus said) I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoeverabides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apartfrom me you can do nothing. John 15:5  We believe the only way possible to live the Christian life is byGod’s power within us. So we seek to practice a dailydependence on God’s Spirit to enable us to do what is right.(Phil. 2:13, Eph. 5:18)

Personal Witness Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks

you for a reason for the hope that is in you 1 Peter 3:15

It is the responsibility of every Christian to share the GoodNews with those with whom God brings us into contact. Wepractice personal sharing about Christ and inviting friends tochurch.

Lord’s Supper For I received from the Lordwhat I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the

night when he was betrayedtook bread, and when he hadgiven thanks, he broke it, andsaid, “This is my body which isfor you. Do this inremembrance of me.”  In thesame way also he took thecup, after supper, saying, “Thiscup is the new covenant in myblood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, youproclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Corinthians11:23-26  The Lord’s Supper is a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice for us. It isan act of worship that should be conducted with reverence andis limited to those who are believers. We practice the Lord’sSupper regularly, but not on a fixed schedule. Generally, CrossPoint practices the Lord’s Supper 6 times eachyear: 1 time each quarter and at Good Friday and ChristmasEve services.  Eternal Security My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, andno one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. John10:29  People were created to exist forever. We will either existeternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with Godthrough forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separatedfrom God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternallife. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence.

Who Do We Cooperate With: CrossPoint is adenominational church affiliated with the Southern BaptistConvention and contributing to the Cooperative Program. From www.sbc.net:

“The Southern Baptist Convention(SBC), organized in 1845 in Augusta,

Georgia, has grown into a nationalnetwork of more than forty-five thousandchurches and church-type missions with

nearly sixteen million members whoworship in more than two dozen

languages each week across the UnitedStates and its territories. Southern

Baptists provide direct support foralmost ten thousand individuals who

serve across the nation and around theworld in direct ministry as the hands andfeet of Jesus Christ, ministering to at least 377 people groups in 153

countries, many of whom have little access to the Gospel in theirnative language. Southern Baptists also provide ministerial trainingand education for more than sixteen thousand full-time and part-

time students through their six theological seminaries. The term "Southern Baptist Convention" refers both to the elevenministry entities supported by Southern Baptists and to the annualmeeting when messengers to the Convention assemble in a host

city to transact the business of the Convention. Working incooperation with 1,174 local associations and 42 state conventions,

Southern Baptists share a common bond of basic Biblical beliefsand a cooperative commitment to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus

Christ to the entire world. One becomes a Southern Baptist by uniting with a Southern Baptist

church — one in friendly cooperation with the Southern Baptistenterprise of reaching the world for Christ. Typically church

membership is a matter of receiving Jesus as your Savior and Lordand experiencing believer's baptism by immersion.”

As a Southern BaptistChurch we are alsoaffiliated with the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of

Southern Baptists(www.kncsb.org) whichincludes more than 400churches and ministries.  More locally we are associated with smaller associations of churchthat are regionally joined.

    • Central Baptist Association of Kansas(www.centralbaptistassociation.net)

    • Smoky Hill Baptist Association (http:// www.smokyhillbaptist.com)

Other associations will be added to our list of cooperations asCrossPoint continues to expand.  Why not just be an independent church? We are an independent church! Every SBC church is completelyindependent. There is no denominational control or hierarchy, as

there are in most other denominations. Each church is self-governed. For example:

    • Every SBC church chooses its own pastor • Every SBC church owns its own buildings and assets  • Every SBC church determines its own programs

What are the advantages of affiliating with the SBC? It allows us to identify with other Christians around the world whoare known for their commitment to the Bible. Also, it allows ourchurch to participate in the largest missionary organization in theworld. Cooperating with the nearly 16 million other SouthernBaptists makes us one of the most blessed denominations to haveever existed.

The CrossPoint Membership Covenant: We neverask our members to do more than the Bible clearly teaches. Weonly expect our members to do what the Bible expects everyChristian to do. These responsibilities are spelled out in the

Membership Covenant. Additionally, this is not a contract, but a covenant. It is merely theminimal expectation of someone calling themselves aCrossPointer.  The Membership Covenant “Having received Christ as my Lord and Savior and beenbaptized, and being in agreement with this faith community’sstatements, strategy and structure, I now feel led by the HolySpirit to unite with this church family. In doing so, I commitmyself to God and to the other members to do the following:
