Dear Stella Community,

The Advent Season

This Sunday brings the start of Advent. Advent is a time of waiting for the coming of the Christ-Child at Christmas and provides us an opportunity to reflect and renew ourselves. As we draw to the end of the school year it is also a time for us to reflect - is there something about ourselves that we need to focus upon and re-imagine?

The Semester Two Report should be available to you by 4 December. It provides an opportunity to have a reflective discussion with your daughter about her goals and areas for improvement for 2016. Next year we will have an even greater focus on reflective learning at Stella and we aim to provide opportunities for the girls to think more closely about their role as a proactive learner.

Mary Ryland’s Farewell Gift

I would like to formally acknowledge the stunning gift that Mary Ryland has made to the college of two stoles (liturgical vestments for mass or liturgies). These beautiful stoles have our Benedictine values embroidered upon them and will be worn at significant events such as our Opening School Mass and Graduation Mass. We thank Mary for such a thoughtful gift to the Stella community.

Congratulations

Congratulations to our Duke of Edinburgh girls who have completed Silver Awards with a recent trip to New Zealand and good luck to our Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award students who leave for Cambodia today. Thank you to Andrea Mezger and her team of Stella staff for taking on these adventurous journeys with the girls.

Congratulations to Teigan O’Shannassy (Year 11) who has been nominated for the 2015 NewsLocal Junior Sportstar Award. We wish her luck.

Well done to the Year 10 Drama Class whose performance on Wednesday evening was well received by the audience. Congratulations to Mr Cartwright for preparing the girls so well and to Jade Philip, Isabel Andia, Vanessa Morgan, Samantha Picello, Bianca Lacey, Madeleine Press, Grace Kendall and Maya Gardiner-Mullins for their excellent work.

Visit to China

Over the past week I have travelled to China with Jiani Chen visiting the families of our overseas students. I had the opportunity to gather with families in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Qingdao. It was a privilege to meet with the parents of our girls and hear how much they value the opportunity for cultural immersion and the broad curriculum that Stella has provided for their daughters. Thank you to Jiani for assisting with this important event.

A Prayer for Advent

O God of promise, with cloud and fire, by day and by night, you led Israel from slavery to the land of milk and honey.

Show us your path; teach us to trust you. O God of promise, through your prophets and angels, with

wonders and signs, you prepared the way for Jesus. Show us your path; teach us to follow to you.

O God of promise, from the manger in Bethlehem to the empty tomb, you walked with the least and the lost. Show us your path; teach us to rely on you.

O God of promise, in water, bread, and wine, in Advent word, you draw our eyes to your coming at the end of time.

Show us your path; teach us to delight in you. Amen.

Congratulations to Caitlin Andrew and Mali Garling who have been awarded their bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and to Maya Williams, Inde Halligan and Isabella Seeto who have been awarded their silver awards.

Today a group of Year 10 and 11 students and four staff members leave for Cambodia. During their time over there they will volunteer at the Happy Days Village School and experience life in a Cambodian school. They will be taking with them over 500 friendship bracelets to distribute - thank you to all the students who have enthusiastically been making bracelets. We wish them the best of luck.

Congratulations to the over 300 students who have been involved in Duke of Edinburgh this year. They have walked 1000s of steps, given up 100s of hours volunteering, learnt a skill and been actively involved in a physical activity. Thanks must also go to the staff who have given up weekends to supervise the hikes, and who have also supported the girls while they have assisted the Learning Support Department and been involved in the Information Centre’s Duke of Edinburgh program.

On Tuesday evening fifty Stella Maris students experienced Twilight at Taronga for the annual end of year Gifted & Talented event. Giraffes, elephants, chimpanzees, lions, peacocks and ungulates were all greeted by our enthusiastic students. There were also close encounters with a python, turtle, tortoise and shingleback lizard.

The Zoo education staff were impressed with our students as they were fine representatives of Stella Maris College.
