THE HllGLIC

....LITERARY....

There are very few who realize that the present days in high schoolare the most pleasant that we will ever enjoy. Yet. no doubt, we shallall look back upon this year aud even the beginning of this year, as atime tilled with many pleasant happenings. A time when many of us arefirst beginning our high school work; while others are beginning their second year with a little wiser outlook on school and what it means. Eachyear completed in school means a finer, more durable base upon whichto build our future thoughts and acts.

We are always meeting people who are wishing that they had taken,or had the opportunity of taking, a little more work in school. As studentsin the Star Valley High School we have an opportunity, and that, in aschool where we are given self-government. The student body officers interpret the constitution; and, as it has been adopted by the studentbody, no one objects to being governed in accordance with It.

We are proud to say that the school is no longer considered as a preparation for life, but it is life itself. The efforts we put forth in holding uphigh ideals in school, make of us citizens who will ever guard the welfareof the public in civic life.

Let our motto ever be; "Lend a helping hand," and we will find students as well as instructors reaching out a helping hand in turn. Neverhas a school started with more earnest, enthusiastic, and conscientious student body; while a more competent body of instructors is seldom found. The present outlook for a successful year could not be better.

Though a number of our students and one of our instructors of lastyear are on duty to aid on the battle field of this world's great war, thespirit of unrest is being crowded out of our lives. This shows the stability of character of the people of this part of the intermountiiin countryof which we are justly proud.

The Star Valley High School can not help being a proud successiimong such a people and the instructors will ever be proud of having such afine class of students to instruct. Considering all, we can well say, "Blessednrc we of the STAR VALLEY HIGH."

....EDITORIAL....

Again we welcome the "Happy School Days." may they be the happiest and most successful wa have ever spent. To all the students, in-cludins the Freshmen, this hearty welcome is extended.

The problem of whether the Bugle will be a success or failure is, orshould be. confronting every student. Fellow students, let us make it agreat success. The question rests wholly upon each one. The paper belongs eciually to all and accordingly all should do their part.

It has been proven in several instances that there is a lack of interestand enthusiasm shown toward the paper, by the students at large. Perhapsit is due to the fact that the students suppose that it is simply the workof the staff. This is incorrect. It should be the work of all the students, and should be a recognized advantage to all who take part.

It is the greatest desire of all members of the staff to make thisyear's paper the best it has ever been. We have an uphill pull, but withthe full support of each student and faculty members, we will not be afraidof failure.

We have in this school, material just as good as is found in anyschool of the same siz-a, and we cannot afford to sacrifice it. A school isnot known by its elaborate buildings, campus, and enrollment, but by itsproducing scholarship. Therefore, let us all be loyal to our Bugle, makeit a fair representative of our school, to other schools, and let it rankforemost. , ,

We welcome the STUDExNTS SKETCHER'S club, as it is the first clubin our school. We wish it success, and hop»^ for support from the studentsthroughout the year may be given it.

A movement is already being started in school regarding the clearing of our campus. They say, "a thing well begun is half done." so let'sall get a monstrous beginning and roll the rocks from the campus.

School ActivitiesDuring the fii'st month of school the S. V. student^i have surely not

neglected the social side of life.On the first day the students and a few visitors had the pleasure of

listening to a discourse by Professor Horace S. Cummings of Salt LakeCity superintendent of the church schools. His subject was the value of a'I'heologicral course in schools. Those who attended were very much interested in his remarks and considered their time well spent.

In chapel exercises on October 15, we were pleased to acknowledgea visit from Mr. Bowman, Miss Hoover and Miss Kolshorn, state demonstrators fvom the l^niversity of W>oming: also. Mrs. Laura Winters, our

county demonstrator. They spoke on the relation of one to one's selfand the boys' and girls' Club work, encouraging the students to WorkWin.

On Friday night, September 28, the students met in the High Schoolp mnasium for a "get acquainted" party. Principal P. A. Nielson gave the"Address of Welcome," urging the students to put forth every effort tomake this the most sucesssful year in the history of the S. V. H. S.. Thestudents sang a few songs and the remainder of the evening was spent indancing. Everyone had a very pleasant time. Student body President,Alma Nielson, had charge of the dance and is to be complimentedon the orderly way in which it was conducted.

On Friday last, by the delicious odors and the rapid way in which theD. S. girls moved around the building, we were led to believe that the Faculty was going to have a banquet. We are unable to learn what they didhave, but we found out what they did not have: "Buns and Jelly." Thuscourt convenes.

Probably the most amusing event which yet occurred, was the studentbody chivarieing the three newly wedded members of the Faculty, for the purpose of getting their consent to a weddng dance. They were taken for a "joyride through town to the tune of all the old cans the students could find. The affair ended in the High Sshool gymnasium in the form of a danc. The gymnasium was fittingly decorated with shoes and cans. The newlyweds certainly proved their ability to entertain. During the course of theevening refreshments were served which were very much enjoyed even to the"punch."

There are noslackers in the S. V. H. S. as this event proved. Everystudent was in his place and is to be commended on his loyalty to the studentbody.

HEARD FROM THE CLASSESSENIORS

The following officers were elected:Esther Mathews

Vice-President Dowena WaltonSecretary and Treasurer Lila BurtonBugle RepresentativeCheer Master Lov'ina JensenClass Advisor..." Mr. Anderson

We, the seniors, are glad to announce that the chivarie of Supt. Robinson, Jolly, Knight and wives, was a perfect success from start to finish, owing to the fact that the Student Body stayed together fine. Everythingcame off as expected. Next morning in assembly each man was given achance to express his opinion, including Mr. Nelson, who confessed his partin the interference of the hose baptism. They all seemed satisfied and promised us the best dance of our lives.

The of October found the Seniors trying to conceal the fact

that something unusual was going to happen and of course it was the chicken supper and the marshmallow toast which was to come off at dark. O, thatsupper! It was eaten in a secluded grove on the banks of Swift Creek, and just how much every one enjoyed, the chicken, pickles, potatoes roasted in the fire, hot cocoa, cake, and other good things, would be hard totell. Anyway, all ate until they could aat no more. Just when the knowledge that life held no mere pleasures began to grow in the hearts of all, huge bags of nuts and marshmallows were brought out again, and all werearoused to duty.

After the "feed" games and Indian dances were indulged in and whenmidnight descended upon the group baskets were packed up and all declaredit to be the best ever.

JUNIORS

The first Junior class meeting of the season was held September 28,at which meeting the following officers were elected:President PetersonVice-president Marian GardnerSecretary and Treasurer Vivian HarrisonCheer and Song Master Wilford NeisonBugle Representative Annie HaleAthletic Manager William HepworthAmusement Committee Ella Boles, Alma Nielson, Virgie Richardson

The Junior party held October 13, in the gymnasium, proved to be asuccess, although there was but a small attendanco, everyone enjoyedthemselves to the greatest extent.

Beware! Ye Sophomores, Seniors and Freshies of the Junior Class, for we intend to be the liveliest class in school and we will keep ourlight shining.

SOPHOMORES

The class of *20 met September 28, and organized, the followingofficers were chosen:

President Rodney BarrusVice-president Ressa WolleneinSecretary and Treasurer Helen BurtonAthletic Manager llussel WoodAthletic Manager Laura TolmanSong and Cheer Master George CrawfordBugle Representative Gladys CallChaperone ' Miss Helen Bacon

We have had four meetings.

A large party has been planned to take place in the near future.Perhaps you have heard about this, but I am going to tell it again.

The Q. S. girls chaperoned by chief cook. Miss Bacon, and accompanied by

Miss Morrell, left the High School Saturday morning with plenty of eat-abl-es, enroute for the geyser.

In due course of time the girls reached the vicinity of the geyserbut were unable to reach the exact site. The lunch was then callod uponto do its share. Just as it started to disappear, Mr. Nelson appearedupon the scene. Tho' an unexpocted guest, he was treated royally. It wasfortunate for ths crowd that Mr. Nelson was along, for Miss Bacon hadbecome lame, and was in need of assistance to get down the trail. Anumber of girls who were anxious to get home, traveled faster than the maincrowd, who were suiting their pace to Miss Bacon's hop, skip and jump. The leading party claim to this day that the sight of a baby porcupine and acinnaman bear were in the course of the adventures of the day.

Ask Gladys, if you don't believe this.

FRESHMANThe lively Freshies are progressing visibly and invisibly. We have

elected the following officers:

President Valera LeeVice-President Sybil RobinsonSecretary and Treasurer Cora HydeAthletic Manager Wesley OsmondAthletic Manager Bernice PetersonBugle Reporter Lavera LeeYell Master Eugene WilliamsonSong Master Archie Gardner

After the officers were chosen we adopted the colors, Purple and Gold.

Tho organizaton of the STUDENT'S SKETCHERS club of the S. V.H. S. is the result of Mr. Nelson's ambitious suggestion. Mr. Nelson wasclected president, Marian Gardner, secretary and treasurer, and Lila BurtonBugle reporter. We hope to reach the high water line and show you whatwe can do. Watch for it

As yet this school has not had the pleasuro of receiving any schoolpapers from other high schools, but we hope that in the near futuresome of the schools will see fit to accept our hearty invitation and honor uswith their exchanges.

The Liberty Bond is perhaps the most widely discussed topic of theday; individuals, as well as corporations, churches and schools are placingall their spare money in ths hands of Uncle Sam to back our soldiers attho front and funds are steadily increasing.

We, the Student Body organization, are proud that the S. V. H. S.,among the rest of up-to-date high schools are helping Uncle Sam by addingcur name to the list of subscribers.

ALUMNIUntil last spring the Alumni had not been formed into a flourishing

r.ssociation, but at the banquet, which welcomed the class of nineteen seventeen to the ranks, a stabla, well organized association was effected.Such an organization will surely tie a strong bond of sympathy and love fortheir Alma Mater, and is certain to bring about splendid results. We lookfor big things from the Alumni association, this year. Tho class of nineteen-seventeen was the largest graduating class to leave our S. V. H. S., and wasthe flrst to pass from under the sheltering roof of our splendid new home, totry life in the great wide world. The members are putting their enviable reputation to a test by theiir earnest, determined efforts to make their variousoccupations a success.

KATHERYN LYNCH, who was "Miss President" to the class lastyear, believes in the proverb, "The wise man changes his mind often," forafter spending the summer in Salt Lake City, preparing h-erself for a schoolteacher, she came home and became an industrious cashier by her father'sside in the bank.

KEM BLACKER, the fun of the class, who was always up to somo new

prank, practiced the stern expression of school master in the State universityat Laramie. He finally became so efficient that he was rewarded with aschool in Forcstdale, where he proudly resides.

VICTORIA CAMPBELL, won a far famed reputation as musician by

hor faithful work in the school operas. Her splendid acting in the school

dramas was rewarded by the dainty dramatic pin awarded to her by theschool. With her many talents we feel sure that Victoria will make a suc

cess of whatever may fall to her lot. We wish her well in her present occu

pation as "Dear Teacher."

FOSTER BARRUS, CYRIL CRANEY AND VESTON WILLIAMSON,

three talented young patriots, who were much admired and respected by

every member of the student body, marched away to their country's call,to join the ranks of Uncle Sam's khaki clad soldier lads. We are hoping for

the time when they will come "marching home again," crowned heroes.

HARPER BILLINGS was no "Sham" scholar, which was proven by

the numerous "a's" on his report card. He certainly knew things! Thissummer he has been putting his knowledge to a test by making agricultural experiments on the farm. Shirking was not one of his failings.Harper believed in the saying, "Work, while you work."

EMMA BLEAZARD gathared around her many true, admiring friendswhile in S. V. H. S., by her sweet, attractive manner and ready witThe diamond which she was waaring proves that she has given her hand aswell as hor heart to a certain lucky soldier. Meanwhile she is teachingreading,^ 'riting, and 'ruthmetic to the youngsters in Hardmanville.

LEONE CALL, the girl who smiles, caried off the laurels by winning

the debating medal and a dramatic pin, due to her untiring efforts along

these lines. Leone is nc« playing the role of teacher in Freedom.

VERBA CHILD wo a a very popular member of the class. Her sweet,

retiring manner and gentle ways won for her the love and respect of theentire school. If she is liked as well for a teacher as she was for a

fellow student her success is assured.

ELONA GARDNER, the one who wins! Her aims are as high as thestars, and her motro is, "Success." She did herself credit in the difficult

position as editor-in-chief of the Bugle last year. Elona is noted forher musical and oratorical ability and her record as a student is enviable.

She spent the summer in Laramie training herself to be a "schoolmarm"

and at present is acting the part in Auburn.

VIONA WILLIAMSON, who was never content unlass buzzing in

the activities of the school, surely did credit to the school, as well as

herself, when reprensenting us in the plays and debates. Her work along

this line won for her a debating medal -and a dramatic pin. Turnervill

is her place of abode since she has turned teacher. We all wish her an

abundance of success in her new occupation.

ALICE JOHNSON, the mischief maker, seemed to have for her motto,"Care, care, drive it away," for gloom was majestically dispelled in herpresenea. After a summer of preparation in Salt Lake City, Alice is suc-

cesfully teaching the "a, b, c's," in Fairveiew. Good luck to Alice.

VIOLA HEMMERT, our dainty unpretentious graduate, has suddenlysurprised us by accepting a man's position, that of bookkeeper in theprosperous Mutual Creamery at Thayne. Long live Viola, Uncle Sam's

helper.

JUNIOR HIGH.

Due to our late organization of the staff, we have been unable to receive

the report from the Junior High School of Thayne, but it will be publishedin the next edition.

JokesMr. Nelson: (In Pubic Speaking.) "Now class, this is a very hard

subject. I hardly know how to cover it."

Ira: "Take your coat off."

Mabel Taylor: "Do you know Willie Hill's head?"

Bill Robinson: "Yes."
