Happy New Year from your Preschool! We are happily looking forward to this New Year filled with learning ac-tivities, socialization, continuing friendships, and our loving Christian environment. This month we continue with a healthy snack menu developed by our parents. Some of the items we plan to serve are: fresh fruit salad, wheat bagels with cream cheese, waffles and honey, peanut butter celery, ba-nanas rolled in granola, homemade applesauce, oatmeal with raisins and honey, and farm fresh eggs. We wel-come your donations of fresh fruits and vegetables and promise to incorporate them into our menu. On January 14 the children will be making Stone Soup, we invite our parents to join us. The children will learn this story of sharing and will also assist their teachers in preparing the vegetables and making the soup. Watch for pictures in January we will study the letters: Qq, Rr, Ss, and Tt. We will learn to shape rub, make foot prints, cut-out penguins, and decorate snowflakes. Our themes include: the five senses, arctic scenes, and winter animals. School is closed on Monday, January 17. On Friday, January 28, our children will have one of our most favorite activities…..Teddy Bear Day which includes activities with “bears” … from snack to art to story to songs and etc. One of our families is looking for an infant care person, three to four days a week, approximately sometime in June, from 7am to 4pm. If you are interested, see me. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Rita Spohn, Director

The Return of the Shoes So stand ready, with truth as a belt tight around your waist, with righteousness as your breastplate, and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of Peace. (Ephesians 6:14) It has been five years since St. Paul has had the opportunity to provide shoes for our community. It is time to renew this tradition. Join The Social Ministry Board in announcing the good news of peace by donating new shoes during the month of January. Shoes can be left in the narthex or in Morton Hall on the Sundays January 2, January 9, January 16, and January 23. You may bring either children or adult sized shoes. Athletic shoes are often preferred. Velcro shoes are appre-ciated for the smaller sizes. Socks would also be a great addition. I would like to share a little information about this year's recipients. Both adult and children's shoes will be given to the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. This shelter has been sup-ported in many ways by our congregation under the devoted leadership of Ray Hinders. Most of the children's shoes will be given to one. TLC School for Homeless Children in Stockton. Many of these children live at the homeless shelter. This school has an interesting history that I wanted to share with you. For 17 years TLC School operated on the St. Mary's Interfaith Community Services Campus adja-cent to the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. In spring 2009 the St. Mary's leaders announced they were closing the school. They cited that the resources needed to maintain the school would be better used else-where. Thanks to committed community benefactors the school reopened at the Stockton Alternative High School Campus in September 2009. The San Joaquin County Office of Education pays for one teacher and some classroom supplies; Stockton Unified School District provides classroom space; and the balance of the expenses are raised by a volunteer board named the one.TLC Foundation. This foundation pays for additional staff, the majority of the classroom supplies, a contracted counselor, school uniforms and the maintenance of a donated van that provides transportation for children who do not live close to the school. A donation of shoes would be greatly appreciated. Contact Kathy Knight if you would like more information about TLC. She is a member of the foundation.

SHINGLES OR HERPES ZOSTER Some questions and answers about the vaccine.

Shingles is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus which also causes chickenpox. There is now a vaccine available; however many people still wonder about whether to take it and how effective it is. Below are some commonly asked questions with accompanying answers. If you still are uncertain about whether or not you should take the vaccine, as always you should consult the medical professional responsible for your care.

Q. Should I get a shingles vaccine if I’ve already had shingles? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that most adults 60 or older receive the shin-gles vaccine even if they’ve had an episode of shingles in the past. Shingles can recur and the vaccine can lower the risk of recurrence. Q. Is the vaccine fail safe? The vaccine is not fail safe. Some people develop shingles despite vaccination. However, even when it fails to suppress the virus completely, the shingles vaccine may reduce the severity and duration of shingles. Q. What are the most common side effects of the shingles vaccine? The most common are redness, pain, tenderness, and swelling at the injection site, as well as headache. Q. Are there indications for not using the vaccine? The shingles vaccine is a live vaccine, so it is not intended for those with a weakened immune system due to HIV/AIDS, lymphoma or leukemia- or those who are receiving radiation, chemotherapy or other immune sys-tem-suppressing drugs for organ transplants and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

Thank you St. Paul Lutheran Church for any prayers offered in my behalf and special thanks to Mavis Zimmerle for the good Thanksgiving dinner she brought me. Also, thanks to Bill Maki for coming and giving communion, and to the Quilting Group for the beautiful lap quilt and cookies. The cookies and the turkey dinner were both really good. Thanks to all and may God Bless you for your kindness.
