Seventeenth Sunday In Ordinary Time (Year A) 1 Kgs 3:5 7-12 ~ Ps 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-30 ~ Rom 8:28-30 ~ Mt 13:44-52

“Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong” (Cf. 1 Kgs 3:9) This weekend we celebrate the paschal mystery of the Lord (His passion, death, resurrection, and ascension), as we do every Sunday, in conjunction with the feast of our patroness, St. Ann - The Mother of the Blessed Mother! We should all pause at some point today and give thanks for so great a gift! Incredible as that is, this weekend I would like to reflect on the passage above from today’s first reading and invite you to do the same. King Solomon was told by God in a dream to ask whatever he wanted and God would give it to him. In response, Solomon spoke the words above - Solomon asked for Wisdom. Although Solomon’s request took into account that he was to be a leader of God’s people, we too can make this beautiful request part of our daily prayers to the Lord.

In my opinion, another thing that is so amazing about this passage is the way in which God has already answered this prayer for us - His beloved bride - The Church. I hope at this point you’re asking yourself “What exactly are you getting at, Dcn. Michael?” Well, I’m glad you asked! My point is this - In a particular way, Our Church, is the church to which “the fullness of grace and truth has [been] entrusted” (cf. Catechism 819). Or, in other words, we have been freely given the fullness of the wisdom of God - The wisdom with which He governs all of creation. We are spoiled with sources to learn about this wisdom: in the Scriptures, in Church teaching, in the writings of the Saints and in the example of their lives. What we learn from reflection on these sources is that God is not a distant God who simply set the universe in motion and stepped away. No, Our Lord desires for us to know Him - To know that He wants a personal loving relationship with each of us.

Building on the ideas above, I’d like to use the rest of this space to focus on the wisdom and the gift that is Church teaching. The reason for doing so is that I am very aware of the fact that many people disagree with Church teaching, struggle with living it out, or simply dismiss it as outdated or impractical. Without getting into particular teachings, please consider the why which is the foundation of what is considered Church teaching.

The why is the great dignity we have as people made in God’s image and likeness. This is a pure gift which God gives to each person and at the same time is a call to greatness, to sanctity. To aid us, we have the sacraments of the Church, which are privileged moments where we encounter Christ and where He offers us the grace to live out so great a calling. We also have the teachings of the Church which, as challenging as they may be to our normal way of thinking, we can look to with confidence for guiding our thoughts and the choices we make. By looking to Church teaching, in addition to the other sources I mentioned above, we can soften our hearts and open our minds to abundantly receive the fruit of Solmon’s prayer - “to distinguish right from wrong,” and for “an understanding heart to judge [others]” so that we can learn to truly love them, guiding them into a life-giving and salvific relationship with Christ and His Church.

May God’s love and peace be with you each and every day, and may our minds and hearts remain open to the wisdom of the Lord laid out for us in the teachings of His Church.

-Sincerely In Christ, Dcn. Michael Lamy

There is nothing wrong with

America that cannot be cured by what is right with America.

Made in the Image and Likeness of God

What does it mean to be made in the image and likeness of God? How do we live this reality in our everyday lives? All adults of St. Ann Church, and friends of St. Ann, are invited to a study of Pope St. John Paul II’s most influential theological studies, entitled “Theology of the Body.” This study looks at the human person, as created in the image and likeness of God, and how all of us, young and old, are called to live out this reality. This profound teaching offered what St. John Paul called, “an adequate anthropology.” This session will be for three weeks on Thursday mornings from 9:30—10:30 a.m. beginning August 6th. This will be led by Deacon Michael Ramy, St. Ann’s seminarian intern.

With all of the turmoil occurring in our country, perhaps now is the time to step up our prayers on behalf of our nation. As you may know, the patron of our country is Mary under the title Immaculate Conception. The patron of our continents of North and South America is Mary under the title Our Lady of Guadalupe. "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."

To Our Blessed Mother

O Most Blessed Virgin Mother of Mercy, at this crucial time, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care. Most Holy Mother, we beg you to reclaim this land for the glory of your Son. Overwhelmed with the burden of the sins of our nation, we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuge in your motherly protection. Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Amen.

Entrustment of America to the Blessed Virgin

by St. John Paul II (1979)

The bishops of the Church in the United States have chosen you in the mystery of your Immaculate Conception as the Patroness of the People of God in this country. May the hope enclosed in this mystery prevail over sin and may it be shared among all the sons and daughters of America and throughout the human family. In a period during which the struggle between good and evil, between the prince of darkness and the Father of light and of evangelical love is becoming greater, may the light of your Immaculate Conception show to all the way of grace and salvation. Amen.

Daily Litany for the United States of America Heavenly Father we give you

Praise, Honor and Glory. Sacred Heart of Jesus, hear

us. Holy Spirit guide the leaders of

our country. Immaculate Heart of Mary,

lead us back to your Son. St. Joseph, make us agents of

love, mercy and forgiveness. St. Michael, protect our country

against evil. All Saints in heaven, pray for

the United States of America.
