Twelfth Sunday In Ordinary Time (Year A)

Jer 20:10-13 ~ Ps 69:8-10, 14, 17, 33-35 ~ Rom 5:12-15 ~ Mt 10:26-33

Reflection by Deacon Michael Lamy

From the moment of their conception in the womb of their Mother, every male child is called

to be a Father. Unfortunately, however, I think many young boys/men don’t grow up understanding the awesome reality of what this means (maybe I’m simply speaking for myself here, but I have found this to be true with many men). Please, allow me to explain as best I can:

In my mind, one of the best ways to begin to understand the reality of what it means to be a father is to see how mothers compliment fathers. I’m not talking about saying “Honey, you’re looking good this morning! Switching from caramel frappuccinos to black coffee is starting to pay off!” (Fair warning - sometimes I make very corny Dad jokes; you may not have even realized I tried to make a joke). I digress.

When I say we should look to the ways mothers

compliment fathers to better understand what it means to be a father, I mean women help reveal to men their true identity - this works both ways. Our very bodies speak to this reality and make it clear that women and men were made for each other.

A woman reveals to a man that in order to bring life into the world (aka, children) he needs

to ‘co-operate’ with her. The reality that men and women need each other to co-create life with God is at the heart of what I’m trying to say. They cannot add another unique and unrepeatable human being to be numbered among God’s children without one another. Within God’s design, this ideally takes place within the sacred relationship of marriage.

All that said, to be a father or a mother is not only for those who get married and are able to

have children. The beauty of being created in God’s image and likeness allows us to live this out spiritually as well, and this is no less profound than cooperating with God and another human being to co-create a child. The simple yet incredibly awesome truth is that we are all called to help those around us grow in relationship with the Lord - this is how we become truly life-giving for others. This is the most basic task of any parent for their child and is only possible with God’s grace (lots of it!). We can live this out as parents in marriage and/or as celibates who co-labor with the Lord to build up the kingdom of God.

Like Jeremiah from today’s first reading we will face many challenges in trying to live out

the reality of what I’ve tried to explain above and will have to constantly remind ourselves as he does that indeed “the Lord is with [us]” (cf. Jer 20:11). St. Paul too emphasizes “the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ [overflowing] for the many” which conquers sin and death and gives life to the world in and through Jesus (cf. Rom 5:15). In conclusion, know that “even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid,” the Lord gives all the grace needed to live out true fatherhood and motherhood for the sake of building up His family, so that we can all come to know that we are beloved sons and daughters of our heavenly Father (cf. Matt 10:30-31a). May God’s peace & love be with you this & every day.

Universal Charitable Deduction The signing of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (“CARES”) Act has created a Universal Charitable Deduction of $300 for taxpayers. This is an “above-the-line” deduction, which means it will be available to all taxpayers, not just those who itemize. Example: A taxpayer who takes the standard deduction and makes a $300 cash gift (not stock) to a quali ied charitable organization, like their parish, may claim the $300 deduction in computing his or her adjusted gross income. The gift may be made at any time during the remainder of 2020. This deduction is in addition to the taxpayer’s standard deduction. If you would like to make a donation to St. Ann Church & National Shrine, you can do so electronically here: giving.parishsoft.com/app/giving/stannchurch or text to 504-226-7404, or you can mail it to 4940 Meadowdale St., Metairie, LA 70006. Your generosity of stewardship is always appreciated.

A Letter from God Author Unknown

Hi, I watched you as you got up this morning, and hoped you would talk to me, even if it was just a few words, asking my opinion or help for the day or just to thank me for the new day. But I noticed you were too busy, trying to find the right outfit to wear to work. So, I waited. When you ran around the house getting ready, I was sure there would be a few minutes for you to stop and say hello, but again you were just too busy tending to yourself. At one point you sat in a chair for fifteen minutes thinking about all you had to do today. I was sure you would talk to me then. But when I saw you spring to your feet, you ran to the phone and called a friend to get the latest gossip about your co-workers. I watched as you went to work, frantically darting in and out of traffic. I watched as you hurriedly went to your office, saying “Hi” to your friends and co-workers. I waited patiently all day long. With all your activities I guess you were too busy to say anything to me. I noticed that before lunch you looked around, maybe you felt embarrassed to talk to me, and that’s why you wouldn't bow your head. You glanced three or four tables over and you noticed some of your friends talking to me briefly before they ate, but you didn't. That's okay. There was still more time left, and I hoped that you would still find time to talk to me yet. Then you went home. It seemed as if you had lots of things to do. Some time later, after you completed a few chores, you turned on the television. I waited patiently again as you watched TV and ate your meal, but again you didn't talk to me. Several hours went by, but there was never any time for me. I guess at bedtime, you felt too tired. After you said goodnight to your family you plopped into bed and fell asleep in no time. I wanted you to know that it is okay. You may not realize this, but I am there for you. I've got more patience than you will ever know. I even want to teach you how to be patient with others as well. I love you so much that I wait every day for a nod, prayer or just a thought from you. I love you so much that I simply wait. It is hard to have a one-sided conversation, but don’t worry, I’ll wait for you. Well, you are about to get up once again. I will wait, with nothing but love for you and a hope that maybe today you will stop long enough from your busy life and give me a moment of your time. Have a nice day! Your friend, GOD

“When you pass through waters, I will be with you; through rivers, you shall not be swept away. When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, nor will flames consume you.” Isaiah 43:2
