THE ARTS SEPT - DEC 2019

Director: Naomi JonesThey say ‘a change is as good as a rest’ and after a year’s ‘rest’ in the form of maternity leave, I return to the Stahl reinvigorated and re-enthused about the theatre and the wonderful work it brings to the community of Oundle.

We see two visits from bold and innovative Peterborough-based theatre company Lamphouse Theatre this autumn. Their productions of Wild Boy and The Jungle Book boast classic narratives retold with the wit and ingenuity that I so admire about these impressive theatre-makers. A Stahl brochure would seem almost incomplete without a production from Blackeyed Theatre and in November this well-loved company bring us Brontë’s passionate, gothic classic Jane Eyre. Get your tickets quickly as this one promises to be very popular. And fittingly we end our professional programme with a return visit from Simon Aylin and his wonderful Telling Tales Company – Oundle’s very own professional panto! What better way to welcome in the festive season?

Dario Fo’s zany, surrealist comedy, Accidental Death of an Anarchist is a heady blend of vaudeville and politics. Performed by this year’s A level Theatre Studies pupils you can expect an evening of joyfulness and absurdity; a potent reminder that political theatre can be both funny and provocative.

We eagerly await St Anthony’s return to the Stahl after their sell-out success with The History Boys. This production of classic Ealing comedy The Ladykillers, under the skilful direction of Tom Jowitt, will be similarly eccentric and no less uproarious. The School season is brought to a thrilling close with a performance of Rufus Norris’s Sleeping Beauty. Based on Charles Perrault’s original text, the piece will seem both familiar and yet surprising to audiences…. A fairy tale it might be but Disney it certainly isn’t!

Resuming my role as Director of the Stahl I am reminded what a rich cultural resource the theatre is. Pupil, professional, home-grown and nationally renowned talent all populate this season’s offering, so grab your diary and fill those long winter evenings with some theatre of exceptional quality.

Directed by Matt Burlington Performed by Oundle School Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist is a classic piece of twentieth century drama. Combining elements of Commedia dell’Arte with contentious political comedy, Fo creates a rambunctious, absurdist satire that is at once both farce and deeply serious. Examining the political hysteria and police corruption of 1970s Italy the play has been endlessly popular, enjoying many successful revivals. It promises to be an excellent evening of physical comedy, madness and mayhem.

Based on the incomparable film from 1955 – The Ladykillers is a

classic black comedy. A sweet little old lady rents out a room in

her house to a professor of music. Musicians are not what they seem and Mrs Wilberforce finds herself alone in her lopsided house pitted

against a gang of criminals who will stop at nothing.

Tom Jowitt (St A) directs an eager cast from St Antony House in this 2011 adaptation by the masterful

Graham Linehan, which wrings every droplet of mirth from the

classic Ealing comedy.

Devised and performed by Lamphouse TheatreDirected by Tom Fox

Wild Boy is the incredible, true and moving story of a feral child found in the woods in Hannover, Germany in 1726. Unable to speak, or stand up straight, the Wild Boy was named Peter and taken to the court of King George I, where he lived as a pet. The King quickly became bored of the child and soon Peter's story was lost to legend, until a fire broke out in Norwich prison. During the evacuation one of the inmates was recognised as the Wild Boy. This production tells Peter’s story with luscious live music, movement, puppetry and magic, and questions what it means to be human.

SLEEPINGBEAUTY

Written by Rufus Norris From The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods by Charles PerraultDirected by Naomi Jones and Performed by Oundle School

Cursed to sleep for a hundred years by the innocent pricking of a finger. Only true love’s kiss can wake her…. You know the story, right? But what about

the fairy who cast the spell? Can she ever make amends? And what happens when Beauty wakes up, gets married, has kids and moves into an enchanted

castle with her flesh-eating ogre of a mother-in-law? It’s Sleeping Beauty but not as you know it!

Drawn from Charles Perrault’s original story, Rufus Norris’s irreverent adaptation skilfully mixes the mythic with the macabre. Performed by

Oundle School’s endlessly talented Third to Upper Sixth Form with a rich mix of puppetry, music and ensemble movement, this production will

enthral and surprise adults and children alike.

Friday 6th SeptemberVenue: Great Hall Performance: 7.45pm Tickets: All welcome, no tickets required

All Music Scholars and exhibitioners will be in attendance as we seize this opportunity to reunite and welcome our new award holders.

Tickets from Oundle Box Office www.oundlefestival.org.uk; 01832 274 734The Škampa Quartet is among the very finest of an outstanding group of current Czech string quartets that has represented their country in major Concert Halls around the world for twenty-five years. Through their mentors, the legendary Smetana Quartet, they trace their roots to the earliest quartets – such as the Bohemian Quartet – in a land described in the 18th century as the Conservatoire of Europe and that remains, to this day, the very cradle of European Chamber Music.

Education has long been an important facet of their work, and one that they find particularly rewarding. They teach in many places around the world but particularly at the Royal Academy of Music in London where they were appointed Visiting Professors of Chamber Music in 2001.

As they focus on their Wigmore Hall concert, we are fortunate to be hosting the Škampa Quartet to work with our chamber musicians ahead of our tour to Prague in February. After their 5:30pm concert, the quartet will coach our ensembles on Brahms Sextet, Clarinet Quintet and a movement from Mozart’s Oboe Quartet, before more pupils unite with Ďvořák’s Serenade for Strings, first movement in the evening.

Music in unexpected places Friday 4th October Venue: A plethora of venues, starting in the Great Hall Performance: 7.45pm Tickets: £8. Free for all pupils

This proved to be one of our most popular concerts when we first aired such an idea three years ago. Now, in conjunction with BBC Radio Northampton and the Oundle International Festival, we’re back for another evening of surprises and venues hitherto, perhaps, not even heard of! We offer a stunning evening as the audience are split into smaller groups and taken in and around Oundle School’s buildings and beyond: short historical facts about the buildings are then followed by diverse ensembles and solos from our talented musicians. Might we be able to take you into the unopened new Sports Centre, or perform beside the swimming pool, perhaps a House dining room, or the old Tuck Shop of yesteryear? An engaging line-up is assured.

Wind, Sea, Rock and Bone An elemental journey to the edge7th – 21st SeptemberHow is it possible to interpret somewhere as monumental as North Uist? Artists Janet Bates, Rebecca Cotton and Sue Shields are attempting to make sense of this elemental Hebridean island off the west coast of Scotland.

A resident of Uist for the last eight years, Rebecca works with materials directly associated with the environment. Developing ideas around sheep and shore, wild plants and heritage, she produces sensitive drawings and large felted vessels evocative of the landscape with all its texture and subtle hues. Janet and Sue in contrast have just begun their artistic journey with three visits to Uist, but with the knowledge that there is a lifetime of work to be done there.

Janet’s main motivation is derived from the exhilaration one feels when encountering nature. Influenced by museumology, her collage, prints and paper sculpture are a direct response to sketches made in the field. Uist provides a rich biodiversity, ranging from machair to moor, lochs to mountains to sandy coasts, giving unlimited scope for her creative practice.

Sue’s work focuses on drawing, renovation and discovery. Place is an integral theme to her practice, often manifesting itself through landscape and environment. Sue pulls out objects of special interest as she walks through a setting. ‘In this love of place I do not look to cultivate feelings of nostalgia but more a deep respect and love, reimagining and repositioning stories within a modern context.’Uist gets into your hair, it dazzles your vision and skews your very reason. Believing that it would ever be possible to define such a place is foolhardy. This exhibition is the beginning of an awesome regard for this unrelenting place of wind, sea, rock and bone.

Found in the Fields - Carry Akroyd 28th September – 11th October Painter and printmaker Carry Akroyd has for many years maintained, alongside her usual landscapes, a vein of work relating to the nineteenth century Northamptonshire poet, John Clare. This exhibition expresses that interest in a variety of original hand-made artist’s prints: lithographs, linocuts and serigraphs (screen-prints), made in response to the poetry.

At the core of the exhibition are sixteen hand-drawn lithographs incorporating extracts from poems by Clare, bringing the poet’s words to the present day. The artist selected extracts of varying lengths, to assemble a group of works that reflect fascination and concern about the natural world as observed both by the poet of 200 years ago and the artist’s eye now. The combination emphasises the growing recognition of the poet’s pertinence to our current time.

This series, alongside the Shepherd’s Calendar linocuts, were first shown at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh for the 2011 Festival. Since then they have toured to numerous venues in England, Scotland and Wales.

John Clare almost disappeared into total obscurity, except for a long line of champions who endeavoured to keep him in print. Re-valued in the twentieth century, Clare is loved for his ecological sensitivity and descriptive precision. His life story is one of battling in the face of daunting poverty, social and psychological issues. His unique insight records the massive upheavals in English rural life in the early nineteenth century. He was honored with a memorial in Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey in 1989. Carry Akroyd is the president of The John Clare Society.

This exhibition includes some of the artist’s earliest Clare-related images (published in a large format book entitled Nature’s Powers & Spells, in 2009), and linocut illustrations made for three books of Clare’s poetry will also be on show. The more recent work is also included in her latest book, Found in the Fields, published in 2017.

The Paintings of Bernard Kay 2nd – 16th November Bernard Kay (91) was born and raised in Southport. He knew that he wanted to be an artist from the age of nine and his family supported his choice to go to the Liverpool School of Art in 1943, followed by the Royal Academy School where he spent a year studying drawing. In the 1950s, he won a scholarship to study in Paris, where he was able to meet famous artists of the city’s art scene, including Maurice Estève and Picasso. Lydia Corbett, Picasso’s “ponytail model”, is still a dear friend of his.

While in Paris Mr Kay studied the process of aquatint etching under Johnny Friedlaender, and his later series of etchings were sold by Editions Alecto. In France he travelled throughout the countryside and collected drawings that would form the basis for all of his architectural landscape paintings.

During his early years in London he focused on large canvases in an abstract expressionist tradition, before returning to landscape paintings worked in a structured style using an earthy, muted palette. His paintings were represented by the Cork Street Gallery, Roland, Browse and Delbanco, and have been collected in galleries around the country.
