Dear Parents,

Please take time this holiday season to check your child for head lice.  “Schools often see a spike in cases after a school break.  This is often falsely attributed to a return to the school environment, but is actually due to being in the community for an extended period of time." (Pediatric Nursing SeptOct 2014).  “These break times are commonly when children have sleepovers, go to camp, or visit relatives.  Then they return to school, and the teacher or school nurse who is familiar with the symptoms identifies the infestation.  The school, rather than being the approximate cause of infestation, is the location of its identification”.

(We are no longer sending home letters to parents in a class when a case of lice is reported as we have found  that these letters don’t appear to help lessen the occurrence of lice, but may lead to a greater sense of concern.)  Thank you for your diligence in checking your student before January 5th. Enjoy your holiday!

Head Lice Protocol  The West Linn Wilsonville School District supports a “No Live Lice” protocol. The US Centers for Disease Control, Harvard School of Public Health, The American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of School Nurses and Oregon Public Health Department all support this as well.

The focus of this protocol is to keep kids in school and support families.

Guidelines for Exclusion:

1. Students found with live lice shall be excluded from school.

2. Students who present with nits only should not be excluded from school. Parents should be notified that nits have been identified.

3. Parents need to notify school when live lice are found.

Guidelines for readmission to school:

1. Students found with live lice shall be excluded from school.

2. Students who present with no live lice may return to school even if nits are present.

3. Students will be rechecked at 7 and 14 days. If live lice are present, the student will be excluded again.

4. After 14 days, if live lice remain, absence of lice and nits is required for readmission.

5. Students with nits only should not be excluded from school but should be rechecked in 7 and 14 days for the presence of live lice.

6. It is expected that parents will check student’s hair routinely.

Screenings for head lice:

Criteria for screening an individual lice are persistent itching or scratching, known exposure to sibling or other close contact with lice, self‐referral.

A classroom check will be performed when there have been three non‐related cases of head lice in a class‐room within ten consecutive school days.

Parents are to return to school with the student for re‐admission in the event that the student may still have live lice present and will need to be excluded again.

From a medical perspective, infestation with head lice is a mild health condition without serious health conse‐quences for a child, and should not be considered a major health threat to those infested or potentially exposed. No convincing data exists that demonstrates that enforced exclusion policies are effective in reducing the trans‐mission of lice.

Please join us in a presentation by Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee titled:

Plugged In: How Technology Shapes Brains, Relationships, and

the Sense of Self

Who: West Linn Parents and Primary School Faculty When: 6:30-8:30 pm Thursday, January 8, 2015 Where: West Linn High School Auditorium Sponsored By: The Wonderful Parent Organizations and PTAs at Bolton,

Cedaroak Park, Stafford, Sunset, Trillium Creek, and Willamette Primary Schools.

Let's face it, gone are the days where kids passed notes in class in order to communicate. Today there are 100s, if not 1000s, of social media sites that are vying for our kids’ attention. We, parents, thought we were cool by getting on Facebook, but the kids are passing us by with Tumbler, Kik, Hot or Not, Instagram, Flickr, and so many more. While technology is helpful and needed in today’s world, we need to understand and support our children in learning how to use and access it responsibly. It's time for parents to catch up! Not only will you be well informed after the 2 hours, but the event is FREE!

Here’s what she’ll talk about: • The importance of technology in our daily lives • Norm setting around technology and media • The current digital landscape • Modeling and making contracts around technology with our children • Keeping life diverse so kids don’t habituate on technology

Doreen Dodgen Magee is a psychologist based in Lake Oswego and is on the national lecture circuit. She does a two hour, fast paced, witty, extremely up to date, fun talk to parents about what technology our kids are seeing, what's coming down the road, alternative ways to tell our kids to put down the ipod/phone, and reasons to have them pick up technology. She's both cautious and encouraging. For more information on Doreen and her services go to http://doreendm.com/.

This is a parent only event. Childcare will not be provided.

Stafford Giving Tree Thank you for helping our community by donating to The Giving Tree at Stafford!

The PTSA sponsored the Stafford Giving Tree and the kids made sure it was a success!

This year, 207 toys and gifts were donated to the Clackamas County Department of Human Services foster

care program. They have over 430 children in this program, many of these children do not have their own

belongings with them at their foster home.

Clackamas County Department of Human Services was so appreciative of all the gifts and thanked us for giv-

ing these children a wonderful holiday season.

Thank you to all our supportive families who gave so generously to the tree! This wonderful Stafford tradi-

tion would not be possible without the support of our families!

A big thank you to our Community Service Chair, Ivana Tence, for coordinating the Giving Tree.

Thank you to Dr. Yip of The Kids’ Dentist for donating the two trees; Mrs. Jones and her class for taking

care of the trees and ensuring the gifts safely reached Ms. Freeborn’s office; and Krista Oswald for helping to

drive the gifts to Clackamas County Department of Human Services.

Calling all volunteers!! One of our all time favorite events, the Stafford Stampede, needs 1 new chair for the 2015 and 2016 school years. Eric Tuecke and Charrisse Reents have done a fantastic job the

last several years organizing such an amazing and memorable event. However, they are ready to pass the reigns to new chairs (and they promise to be available to answer ques-

tions during the planning stage for the 2015 Stampede).

Also needed are several chairs to help organize Bingo night on February 20, 2015.

Please contact Dardee Layne at [email protected] or Clarissa Aoyama at presi-

[email protected] if you are interested in these amazing volunteer opportunities.

Are your children missing jackets, sweatshirts or other important

items? Please come check the Stafford lost and found. All items not

claimed will be donated to Clackamas County in January.

Budget Highlights

Do you enjoy going shopping? Yes, of course you do!

Since July 2014, eScrip has brought in $665.69 for Stafford!

With so much holiday shopping in the month of December, let’s see how much we can increase that figure! By

registering your credit cards with eScrip, when you swipe your card at certain vendors, a percentage of your pur-

chase is automatically donated to Stafford. Simply go to www.escrip.com and use our school name and our sup-

porter ID number 8567018.

Please take a moment to double check that your Safeway Club card is also registered with eScrip. Ask your rela-

tives to do the same!
