W HAT T IMING

In a few days we’ll be singing “Joy to the World” and welcoming the newborn Prince of Peace. Looking at the state of the world today, these carols seem a little out of touch, as peace and joy don’t jump off the front page of the paper. Maybe Christmas could come at a better time. But I wonder how different this Christmas is from the first Christmas. Because of the Roman-ordered census, Mary and Joseph found themselves unemployed and homeless at the very moment when God chose to be born into this world. Surely, he could have chosen a more calm and peaceful time, a more comfortable and secure place to make known his plan of salvation. Why didn’t Jesus come when all was quiet and at peace? Why didn’t he come when we had rooted out poverty and violence, when we had overcome the ravages of disease and hunger, when we were good and ready for him to arrive? The angel’s words to Joseph might give us a clue to God’s perfectly terrible timing. Remember that Joseph — on hearing that Mary, his beloved betrothed, was with child, and knowing the child was not his, yet loving and trusting Mary with great tenderness — was ready to walk away from the whole matter. The very foundation of Joseph’s world had been shaken. He knew the goodness and integrity of Mary, and so was unwilling to expose her to public scorn. I imagine Joseph saying to himself, “I didn’t sign up for this, and frankly I don’t need this!” “Do not be afraid to take Mary, your wife, into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.” If God was going to so interrupt Joseph’s life and plans, he could have at least given some prior warning! “She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Perhaps God chose the time and manner of Christ’s birth precisely to remind us of our need for God’s salvation. Jesus was not born when it was convenient for Mary and Joseph, for the innkeeper or the stable-hands, for the shepherds, the wise men or even for Herod. And it certainly wasn’t convenient for the child Jesus, himself. Jesus was not born when anyone was ready for him. He was born when we most needed him. As a child, I played hide-and-seek. Whoever was “it” would cover their eyes and count as fast as possible while all the others scrambled for cover. And when the count was up, “it” would cry out, “Ready or not, here I come!” If you don’t feel quite ready for Christmas this year, that won’t keep Christ from coming. Jesus wasn’t born two thousand years ago because the world was ready for him, nor does he wait till we are ready for him today. Then, as now, Christ comes when we are most in need. — Fr. Tom Carzon
