Merry Christmas! As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, we are reminded holy families are human families, with gifts and challenges. Love causes the full spectrum of emotion: joy, peace and wonder, but also can trigger pain and fear. The family is the place we usually first experience love. Our homes are where our children learn love and holi- ness. Many church leaders, like St. John Chrysostom have urged all Christians to make each home a “family Church” which today we refer to as the domestic church”. On this very special Sunday, last in this year, let us pray for each family of our parish. May they be close to God, Faithful to God and his law, and be strong in God. May the doors to our family home always be open and welcome the Holy Family inside with their gifts, especially with their treasure—Jesus Christ, who gives meaning to each Christian family. Be Bold Be Holy Be Catholic. Good News For the last two Sundays our parish bulletin has shared with you good news – different ways our par- ish plans to help our families create a domestic church at home. We have shared some of the re- sources that we believe will be helpful in this ministry. By popular demand, we have repeated the resource insert that can be easily shared with members of the family. These resources are also available on the par- ish website. Upcoming Special Events Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020: 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm Faith Formation kicks of their 2020 season with speakers Michael and Shawn King who will help us explore ways of Reclaiming Sunday. St. Clare of Montefalco, Grosse Pointe Park, MI Page 3 The Congregation of Saint Michael Archangel

months, followed by our School Annual Auction

extravaganza in the spring. We hosted our third Opera

Concert which was a great success and drew support

from the larger community. We added events to

strengthen our spiritual beings and continued building

on those established. In March the Knights organized a

men’s retreat that was appreciated by the attendees.

Project Hope, in its sixth year combines fun, food and

faith in a day that supports and lifts those struggling with

cancer. We love the outdoor activities of summer that

bring us together. We always enjoy the Wheels of St.

Clare slow roll bike ride through the neighborhood and

BBQ by the gazebo. The Annual Golf Outing that

supports our athletic program was a sell out again this

year. We rejoiced with our Deacon, Richard Shubik as

he celebrated 70 in September. In the fall we traveled

to Ireland to retrace the roots of so many.

But by far the most exciting event of this year was our

bold idea to knock on the doors of the homes within our

parish boundaries. Say Hi Sunday sent us on the mission

of evangelization. Inspired by the Archbishop’s letter

Unleash the Gospel, dressed in red, off we went, to the

streets inviting all to come join us for a concert and BBQ.

One month later on a sunny Sunday afternoon as prom-

ised we transformed the Mack Avenue front steps of our

church into a music stage where the sounds of several

groups entertained the crowd as they enjoyed the af-

ternoon BBQ. What a celebration it was. What an assur-

ance of the Holy Spirit working in our midst to bring peo-

ple to God and God to people.

The parish Missionary Strategic Plans (MSP) began to

take shape over the summer, resulting in some exciting

propositions for our parish and school.

Our school enrollment is at 121, we see the signs of slow,

steady growth, especially in preschool. Under the new

leadership our school is taking some new initiatives to

make it a place offering a good, solid education, cath-

olic faith way of life, teaching by the example we set in

service and leadership.

St. Clare celebrated the life of many who passed into

eternal life. We remembered them specifically at our All

Souls celebration. We continued our traditional Act of

Mercy by providing a funeral service to an indigent per-

son during Lent. Our Stephen and Bereavement Minis-

tries continue to accompany those who are experienc-

ing difficulties due to life circumstances. We have assist-

ed numerous individuals and families through our Chris-

tian Service and St. Vincent de Paul ministries. Our pas-

toral team has changed with an arrival of a new princi-

pal, Ann Crowley, Pastoral Associate Sr. Rebecca

Hodge OP and Business Manager Marion Fikany.

I believe that our faith has grown too. Thanks to our faith

formation activities from the growth of our Little Lambs

to the adult sessions. The evangelization effort was

brought to us in many different ways bringing our parish,

friends, visitors, and school families together. Be sure to

visit the Holy Family Chapel throughout the year, to see

how our pictorial wall of our faith in action through the

celebration of our sacraments grows.

Our Garden Club has done great things around our

campus and made countless improvements to our

landscaping.

In all of these areas we tried to be Bold, Holy and Cath-

olic through the lens of being Blessed, Healthy, Beautiful

and Growing.

And … the story continues …

2020 will no doubt be another year of coming together

and celebrating our faith, supporting each other in our

effort to become joyful missionaries of Christ. There will

be challenges, we do not know what the world is going

to be like, what lies ahead of us, yet we know and trust

that the Lord will be with us in our journey of life as His

Mercy and Love envelopes us every day.

Together with nine other pilot parishes we continue to

work on our efforts to “Unleash the Gospel” through the

MSP. In the Year of Catholic (our three-year cycle) we

concentrate on the family as the “Domestic Church”.

We will begin our faith formation gatherings on January

9th with two guest speakers. New programs will be of-

fered Monday, Wednsday and Friday mornings at 9:00

to come to know Jesus better and renew our relation-

ship with Him.

The Building Renovation Committee is finalizing plans to

renovate the lower level bathrooms, landing just if front

of them, parish kitchen and parish hall.

Parish Council is working on the second Say Hi Sunday

walk through the neighborhood along with the follow

up BBQ. After last year’s successful event we want to

keep the momentum going. Mark your calendars for

the walk on May 17th and BBQ/concert on June 7th.

We look forward to all the social gatherings throughout

the year that bring us together for fun and fellowship.

Eight weddings have already been booked this year;

First Reconciliation and Communion are schedule for

April 18th and May 3rd; Confirmation for May 9th. We

have three RCIA members journeying together for the

Easter Sacraments. We are blessed to have two ordina-

tions this year: Brother Anthony VanBerkum OP will be

ordained in Washington DC on May 23rd, and Colin

Fricke will be ordained in the Cathedral of the Blessed

Sacrament in Detroit on May 30th.

Our School will celebrate Catholic School Week with an

Open House on January 26th from 1 pm – 3 pm. Please

spread the news about our great school, invite parents

to visit and meet the fine students and staff. The annual

fundraiser for our school – PTO Auction - is scheduled for

April 4th at the War Memorial, and the first St. Clare

Alumni gathering is scheduled for May 16th.

I see how this challenging Missionary Strategic Plan is

coming together and enriching our community. With

new energy, enthusiasm, zeal and vision for our parish

and school community and at the same time with trust

hope and the love of God let us enter into this new

year. May the prayers of Our Lady, St. Clare, St. Mi-

chael, and Blessed Solanus Casey help us be a vibrant,

happy, healthy and faith filled community.

So, my friends, as you can see it is a great story that un-

folds every day. I am very proud to be part of that story.

Thank you all for exercising your gifts, talents and shar-

ing your treasures so that we can minister, grow in faith

and become Bold, Holy, and Catholic.

I look forward to this New Year in our parish and school.

Please remember our St Clare Staff and me in your

prayers.

St. Clare Office Help

For many years St. Clare has been blessed by the ser-

vice of Sr. Val, Sr. Jackie and Dave Knox as our evening

and weekend office staff. With David’s retirement and

other commitments vying for Sr. Val and Sr. Jacquie’s

time, we are seeking part time office help. Basic job re-

sponsibilities include greeting visitors and directing them

to meeting locations, answering phone inquiries, provid-

ing support to SVdP clients, light clerical duties and

opening and closing the buildings. Hours are 6pm-9pm

Monday thru Thursday, Saturday 8-4, Sunday 8-1. For

more information please contact Sr. Rebecca Hodge @

Thank you to Allegra

St. Clare has had a long standing business relationship

with Allegra Printing Company, owned by parishioner

Don Girodat. Many times Don came to the rescue

when we were short on time and needed a rush job.

Always with a smile on his face and of course the gen-

erous discount for the parish, Don would stop by the

office and drop off our orders on his way home, saving

us a trip to the store. We wish all the best to Don and

Sandy as they begin a new chapter in their life known

as retirement! Thank you for your service to our commu-

nity.

CALL TO SERVE OPPORTUNITY

Can you spare TWO HOURS to help feed the hungry?

Volunteers Needed to Help Fill our Pantry Cupboards

Friends, Family, St. Clare Community, lend us your ear and

hear our call to serve those who are hungry and face food

insecurity. After a season of feasting with our family and

friends there is no better time to pay it forward and come

together to help those in our local community who don't

have enough to eat.

Here is how it works: Gleaners Community Food Bank and

Kroger have teamed up to offer St. Vincent de Paul confer-

ences the opportunity to collect food for their local pantries.

This year we will be at the Kroger store in the Village - 16919

Kercheval, Grosse Pointe SATURDAY JANUARY 11th and SUN-

DAY JANUARY 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Here is what you do: Sign up for a two-hour shift on Saturday

or Sunday. Volunteers working at the store hand out sug-

gested shopping lists to customers as they enter the store

and ASK them to please consider purchasing an item on the

list for our pantry.

Customers indicate at check out what they have pur-

chased from the list and those items are deposited by volun-

teers in specially marked carts.

Volunteers working at check-out THANK the customers for

their purchase. When carts are full a volunteer driver brings

the food back to St. Clare where it is sorted in the Social Hall

(basement) and put into the pantry.

Grab a friend or family member and pay it forward.

May these days be

blessed as you clean

out the old and pre-

pare for the new.

What kind of ”Stuff’ are we

talking about? It could be

cleaning out closets and

drawers. It could be cleaning out corre-

spondence. It could be cleaning out your

heart of any bitterness, unforgiveness, im-

patience or jealousy. And how are you

preparing for the new? Will you give the

clothes you cleared out to a thrift store?

Plan to write a few letters a week, or a

month to people you rarely hear from. If

you have cleared out your heart, fill your

heart with a list at least 10 or your gifts, and

10 of your talents, and be grateful.

There are no religious ed classes this week.

Enjoy your vacation.

There are no faith formation classes this

week. However, there is one scheduled for

January 9. It is a special session in our se-

ries on the family. If you have a young

family please plan to attend.

Second grade students preparing for First

Communion will have a Rite of Election at

the 9:00 Mass on January 12. Please see

that this is on your calendar. A parent/

student meeting will follow the Mass.

Mass Intentions for the Week

Our Parish Community

Greetings St. Clare of Montefalco Parishioners!

St. Clare of Montefalco School Families are currently enjoying

Christmas Break. I would like to take a few moments of your time

to share more of what your school community brings forth in the

parish.

The parish school is one with a very unique identity from most other

schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Our families represent diver-

sity across numerous domains including cultural, financial, ethnic,

and racial identities. The children embrace each others unique-

ness and flourish together into young adulthood.

As a team consisting of Father Andrew, school administration, the

teachers and the families we push the limits in offering as much as

we are able to offer to our young learners. Take note of the Open

House January 26, 2020.

Peace to you this season,
