Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word?THIS month, we discuss the many complexities which can arise from NOT making a Will.WHAT MOST PEOPLE THINK OR HOPE!
IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results.
YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting or Single.
MARRIED: In the event of the death of a married person, the Intestacy rules divide the Estate into shares, with a share going to the surviving husband or wife (the spouse). The amount a spouse can inherit is restricted to an amount set by the Government.
THE POPULAR BELIEF that a spouse automatically inherits everything is simply not true. This is because your nearest blood-relations (children, parents, brothers, sisters etc.) are also entitled to take a share under the Intestacy Rules inherit, with the rising values of Estates, the SPOUSE'S SHARE could be the smallest one.
FACT: If you have not made a Will, even your life insurance policies will not be paid until probate has been granted, unless they are written into trust! (Probate will take many months, sometimes years, to be granted!).
FACT: If your Children are orphaned and you have not appointed a guardian in a Will, then Social Services will decide who looks after them, including allocating them to Foster Parents).
FACT: If there are no surviving members of your family, the whole Estate would go to the Crown (Government).
COHABITING: Thousands of people live together without getting married. Unfortunately, most think that, after a few years together or if they have become a Common Law husband or wife and have same rights as a married person. Let there be no doubt about this. If you live with another person unmarried (including single-sex couples), with respect to finance and inheritance you are known as a Cohabitee and do not have the same rights as a married person. The general term, Common Law, means law-based
judicial decisions and custom.
SO, if you are Cohabitee, the information on single people is more appropriate to you.
SINGLE: If a single person dies without a Will, the line of Inheritance can be complicated and can often involve relatives you have never even met!
HERE WE GO... first, you children will inherit your whole Estate - if there are no surviving children, next in line are your grandchildren - if you have no grandchildren, then both your parents - if both have died before you, then your brothers and/or nieces - if none, then your cousins (however far removed) and, if no cousins, everything goes to the Government... phew!
IF you are single and without a Will, I can hear you are thinking: 'Well, that's OK, it will go to my children, anyway'). That may be partly true, but what is also true is that it will take months and, possibly, years to sort out your affairs (obtain Probate), and the Solicitors who sort this out will charge THOUSANDS OF POUNDS for their work. This is money that, for the sake of making your Will (£69), you could have left your Children!
Even if you have no Children or close family, many people would want their Estate to go to CLOSE FRIENDS or a CHARITY, rather than the GOVERNMENT OR UNKNOWN RELATIONS.

CONTENTSOCTOBER 2013
7 Once again, the shorter days and cooler weather signify the beginning of the Autumn months. However, this time of the year holds many potential hazards for out pets. Staff at The Croft Veterinary Clinic, in Newcastle-under-Lyme, possess a wealth of expertise and invaluable knowledge, offering welcome tips on how to combat the myriad menaces posed by fleas, ticks and harvest mites, in addition to the dangers of highly-palatable anti-freeze and Autumn fruits. 9 On Friday, October 25th, Baddeley Green WMC is playing host to a lady who is simply unmissable for fans of Soul and Motown. Diane Shaw is being heralded as the freshest thing to hit the UK Soul scene in years. From the dynamic and emotive ballads of such artists as Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklinand Dorothy Moore, venturing into Northern classics, from the likes of Martha Reeves, Tammi Terrell, The Elgins and The Velvetettes, ending up with everyone in the room on their feet, dancing to a tribute to the classics of Motown, including The Supremes, The Vandellas and her own versions of classics from The Four Tops and The Isley Brothers.16-18 On Sunday, October 20th, join Signal 1 and Signal 2 for the most spectacular bridal event of the year at The Best Western Plus Stoke-on-Trent Moat House Hotel, Festival Park, from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Signal's Autumn Bridal Fayre is the 'one-stop shop' for your 'Big Day' (not just for you, but for the entire wedding party). Take your seat in the ballroom and be entertained by local, two-piece band, Griferz, before your imagination is captured by the event's glamorous catwalk shows at 12.30pm and 3pm, commencing with a short demonstration of hairdressing wizardry by Theo Georgiou, of Theo Georgiou International.24 Classic comedy, 'Time of My Life', is heading to the New Vic Theatre in October, when Alan Ayckbourn makes his annual visit to the Newcastle-under-Lyme theatre-in-the-round. First produced at Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre is one of the playwright's most popular plays and is at the New Vic from Tuesday, October 8th, to Saturday, October 26th. It is Laura Stratton's birthday and, to celebrate the event, her husband, Gerry, their two sons and their partners are gathered for an evening out in the family's favourite restaurant. This dinner turns out to be a significant moment in all their lives with repercussions for years to come!29 Rosehips are a common sight in British hedgerows, adding a splash of colour to Autumnal walks. New research is showing that the humble rosehip could also have role to play in out health, however, and could be an important addition to medicine cabinets this Winter.

'PRE-PAID'Buy yourself peace-of-mine - at TODAY'S prices - and save money!!
IT'S a fact: funeral costs are rising fast!
Indeed, the average funeral costs 71% more than it did just eight years ago!
So, planning for your funeral in advance is well worth thinking about. After all, a recent survey (Sun Life Direct Cost of Dying Report 2012) tells us that a funeral costing £3,284 today will have leapt to almost £5,642 by 2020.
Will your savings or life policy protect you against these rising costs?
Will your family be left with a large bill and uncertainty about your funeral arrangements?
When you are paying for something, do you like to know exactly what it costs?
Would potential long-term care-costs affect the affordability of having the funeral arrangements that you wish?
A new report into Social Funeral Payments - Annual Report by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions on the Social Fund 2010/11 - reveals that the Funeral Payment Scheme, intending to contribute to the cost of funerals for the most vulnerable in society, is failing to meet mounting demand. As the most funerals increases and economic austerity continues, a burgeoning, older population is likely to bring ever-increasing pressure on an already-stretched system.
PAID IN ADVANCE - AT TODAY'S PRICES
With a funeral plan, you can protect yourself (or someone else) against these rising costs. Once you've paid for the plan, everything's taken care of. In addition, buying at today's prices will also save you money, giving you and your loved ones guaranteed peace-of-mind.
BUY WITH COMPLETE CONFIDENCE
You're guaranteed to be accepted for this plan - whatever your age or health. And, if you want to change your mind within 30 days of taking it
out, your money will be refunded in full. That's a guarantee: no questions asked, no quibbles and no cancellation-charges.
CHOOSE THE FUNERAL YOU WANT
With a funeral plan, you decide exactly how you want your funeral to be. By planning it now, you're taking difficult decisions away from the people you care about - helping them at what will, undoubtedly, be a stressful time. You can be certain that the funeral you choose is exactly how it will happen.
FLEXIBLE PAYMENT OPTIONS
You decide how you wish to pay - single payment, instalments or via fixed monthly premiums.

commIttee & volunteers In unIsonTHE completion of a total programme of decoration has further emphasised the upwards momentum achieved by this popular venue in Newcastle Borough. With all rooms and facilities boasting a brand-new 'facelift' (and the addition of a new pool-table and jukebox), Bradwell Workingmen's Club is set to enter the New Year of 2014, truimphantly 'bucking the trend' in clubland throughout North Staffordshire.
The Bradwell Lane club's Secretary, Lesley Hill, attributes its ongoing success to economic good sense and the fact that it benefits from an first-class management committe and very dedicated, "excellent" volunteers, who play a vital role at Bradwell WMC."The club is run on a very tight budget, and we are very lucky to have a brilliant committee which is second-to-none," explained Lesley, who became Club Secretary in January of this year. She is joined on the management body by Alan Wildgoose (President), Pauline Johnson (Treasurer),
Harvey Hulse (Concert Secretary) and Helen Lawton, Susan and David Kiddersley, Graham Johnson and Charlie Riley (Committee Members)."Alan Wildgoose and Harvey Hulse are both very long-serving Committee officers, and are pillars of strength here," Lesley told us.The club relies heavily on volunteers (Geoffrey and others) for the Sunday Bingo Cards, with the Monday Night Bingo attracting what Lesley describes as "a nice, young crowd".Meanwhile, the 'Monday Club' (which meets between 12 noon and 3pm) is run by senior citizens themselves, providing their own entertainment.Throughout the week (on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, plus Sunday lunchtimes), Bingo sessions are, needless to say, a perennially-popular attraction. The club also hosts meetings of the local
branch of the charitable organisation, 'The Buffs' (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes).Concert Secretary, Harvey Hulse, ensures that the club maintains its reputation for presenting top-notch live acts every weekend (both Saturday and Sunday evenings), and entertainment for 2013's festive season is already fully arranged."We are having eleven acts appearing throughout December, with a disco on Christmas Night, plus a pensioners' Christmas party on Thursday 12th and
one for members' children on the 19th," said Lesley Hill.In addition to its own pigeon club and bowls team, Bradwell WMC majors in indoor games, including dominoes and pool, while it boasts two darts teams (playing, on Tuesday and Thursday nights, in the SuperLeague and including world champion, Adrian Lewis, and Lesley Hill's husband, Frazer, himself a county player).Thursday, October 24th, sees the club staging its latest charitable fund-raiser (in aid of Cancer Research), featuring entertainment by six or seven, local youngsters, plus Bingo sessions."On December 27th, 2012, we held a very successful charitable evening for the Donna Louise Hospice, raising £902," said Lesley, whose grandfather, Ernie Smith, was one of Bradwell WMC's founding fathers, collecting a shilling a week from potential members to launch the club.Members and bona fide guests can enjoy a terrific choice of competitively-priced drinks (from the acclaimed portfolios of Carlsberg, Coors and Heineken), served up in friendly, efficient manner by Club Steward, John Bould (who has held the post for the past, two years), and his two assistants.
THE CLUB'S WELL-APPOINTED FUNCTION ROOM (PICTURED ON THIS PAGE) IS AVAILABLE FOR HIRE, WITH DETAILS FROM STEWARD, JOHN BOULD.

Motown
A 'must' for Soul & Motown fansON Friday, October 25th, Baddeley Green WMC is playing host to a lady who packs clubs to the rafters, and is simply unmissable for fans of Soul and Motown.
Once described as the "most famous unknown singer" in the UK, Diane Shaw has, in her career, probably performed in front of more people than most of the singers in the pop charts today.
She is being heralded as the freshest thing to hit the UK Soul scene in years, bringing an enthusiasm and energy rarely seen on stage today.
After a decade of performing her famous Motown show at glitzy venues all over Britain and Europe, for celebrities and dignitaries alike, Diane is now turning her efforts towards going back 'to her musical roots'.
Having grown up with '60s and '70s'
soul scene, Diane has been busy, re-recording and host of Motown, Northern and Modern Soul classics, and songs that inspired her become a professional singer from an early age.
From the dynamic and emotive ballads of such artists as Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin and Dorothy Moore, venturing into Northern classics, from the likes of Martha Reeves, Tammi Terrell, The Elgins and the Velvetettes, ending up with everyone in the room on their feet, dancing to a tribute to the classics of
Motown, including The Supremes, The Vandellas and even her own versions of classics from The Four Tops and The Isley Brothers - something for everyone!
Tickets (priced at £7) are on sale behind the bar at the Leek New Road venue (which is not open in the daytime from Monday to Thursday), with further information available on (01782) 541246.
Guaranteed to get you buzzin'!!BADDELEY Green WMC offers a 'Pink Ribbon Night' - featuring the UK's premier live club, house and dance music band - on Friday, October 11th.
With their unique style and repertoire, HouseJammerz have established themselves as one of the country's 'must-have' acts, playing all the classic club anthems which guarantee to get you buzzin'!
The band takes club/house/dance classics to a whole, new, exciting level, with unrivalled, live production and quality musicianship combining to deliver a show, which, featuring a host of top vocalists, never disappoints.
HouseJammerz comprises Dean Fradley (drums), Steve Parnell (bass), Darrel Hardwick (guitar), Simon Greatbatch (keyboards), Alison David, Judith Ude and Jen Widgery (vocals) and Jim Wheeler (sound).
Priced at £6 (with all profits going to the North Staffs. Breast Care Unit), tickets are on sale behind the bar at the Leek New Road venue (which is not open during the daytime on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays), with further information available on (01782) 541246.

Fun for ALL the family - but PLEASE COME EARLY, SAY ORGANISERS!ON Saturday, November 2nd, 2013, the sky will be illuminated by 'the biggest bonfire and fireworks display in the region'!As ever, the venue for Betley Bonfire is Betley
Court Farm (by kind permission of Mr. and Mrs. F. Speed).Betley Bonfire (which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009) is, moreover, one of the largest events in the WHOLE of the UK.The gates open at 4pm, and the bonfire will be lit at 6pm (SO, REMEMBER TO ARRIVE EARLY!).The fireworks extravaganza will start later in the evening at 7.30pm, once the bonfire is 'going strong' and the expectant crowds have arrived.Once again, Stanworth's Funfair is in attendance, with rides suitable for children and adults of all ages, with 'giant'-rides for the brave amongst you and gentler ones for the rest of us!Other attractions include fire-jugglers (performing at approximately 5.30pm and 6.30pm) and the Signal Roadshow. There will be a pleasing variety of hot food- and drinks-vendors, providing fare and refreshments to suit everyone's taste.Tickets for the event (sponsored by Madeley Heath Motors, in association with Signal 1) are just £7 (adults) and £3 (children). The website is: www.betleybonfire.com

HowthePoppyAppealbeganin1921THURSDAY, November 11th, 2013, marks the 95th anniversary of the Armistice which terminated the 'Great War' (or World War I [1914-18]).
It was three years after 1918, that the very first Poppy Day was held in Britain in 1921.
Since then, it has proved an essential feature of the British way of life, following those post-World War I days.
Poppy Appeal staff and volunteers arrange the annual collection each October/November - a national event which is familiar to shoppers throughout the High Streets across the length and breadth of the land!
It emanated from the formation of the British Legion - now the Royal British Legion - in the aftermath of World War I, leading to practical and help and companionship to the ex-servicemen and women and their dependants.
The Flanders and Picardy areas of Northern France saw some of the most concentrated and bloodiest fighting of 'The Great War' - there was complete devastation: buildings, roads, trees and natural life simply disappeared.
Only one other living thing survived - the Poppy!

Royal British LegionPoppy Appeal 2012
Flowering each year with the coming of warm weather, the Poppy brought life, hope, colour and reassurance to those still fighting.
The first donations for artificial poppies were given in Britain on November 11th, 1921, raising £106,000 (an equivalent spending-power of more than £3.1 million in today's terms), a huge sum for the time!
In Britain, Major George Howson (a young infantry officer who had been decorated for bravery) was also deeply moved by the plight of war-disabled who, in the new world of peace, seemed unemployable.
As a result, he formed the Disabled Society, the object of which was to help disabled ex-servicemen and women.
Howson recognised that the making of artificial poppies might offer opportunities for the Disabled Society, and he put proposals to the newly-created British Legion.
He suggested to the Legion that Society members should make poppies, and the artificial flowers were designed so that someone who had lost the use of one hand could assemble them with one hand - a principle that has endured.

What an amazing evening!!"THANK you all once again. You make it all possible, and don't mind telling the world. We Love You!"
Just one of many glowing testimonials enjoyed by the Cherish Bridal team which, on Tuesday, June 18th, 2013, attended the County Brides North-West Wedding Awards 2013 at Crewe Hall.
It was an honour to have been nominated and to be up against some very well-established companies in the bridal industry. It was a fantastic evening which was filmed for Weddings TV on Sky and Freeview, and will be aired in the near future, as part of a new wedding programme.
The room was full of the region's most respected businesses, and we felt honoured, but deserving to be there. We were one of four finalists in the category for Best Bridal Supplier 2013.
Crewe Hall looked amazing on the night, decked out in splendid, black candelabras, black-and-white table-settings and the room was lit in a gorgeous shade of lilac. The stage was dressed with large, gold Oscar statues, staring down on the finalists for the evening's proceedings.
There was also a large County Brides Awards Ice Sculpture which looked fantastic. After reception-drinks, we sat down to a gorgeous
meal and wine, along with after-dinner competitions and auctions.
Then, it was time. The room was filled with anticipation and excitement, not to mention a lot of nerves!
We waited through all the categories; one by one, they were announced, getting ever closer to the Best Bridal supplier. It was the final category of the evening's awards.
Sadly, this year, we did not pick up the award, but were still very, very happy and very honoured to have made it into the top four of 28 from each category, and there were only seven points between the four finalists.
So, to our customers, past and present, a heart-felt 'thank you' for all your support over the short number of years we have been established. We were up against some very big suppliers and some which have been established far longer, and, so, this gives us great hope for success in the future.
Without 'you', we are nothing, and, for this, we are eternally grateful. The support we see carries us forward, helps us improve our services, helps us grow and brings this type of recognition.
We may not have won this year, but this only makes us more determined to strive forward and continue to put our heart and soul into our services to ensure the experience our customers receive are worthy of us being there again next year to improve on an already-oustanding achievement in 2013.

Havesomefun!!'ADDING years to life, and life to years' is the professed aim of Age UK North Staffordshire's Ageing Well Project.
It seeks to achieve this through a programme of (low-mobility) gentle exercise and walking groups (distance one mile, also three-five miles) throughout Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and the Staffordshire Moorlands.
As well as enhanced fitness- and mobility-levels, participants report a sense of achievement, a better social life and improved health and wellbeing.
So, now that the grandchildren are back at school, come and have some fun with the Ageing Well Project.
"We are also looking for new volunteers to help us deliver our services," said Ageing Well Project Worker, Jeanette Rogers.
"Full (free) training is provided; our next Exercise Group Leaders training course is running throughout October and November."

Simplifying 'Big Day' preparationsIT is, indubitably, true that planning for your 'Big Day' CAN be both stressful and time-consuming - but it doesn't have to be!Firstly, don't overdo the wedding reception details; so, keep the tables simple and elegant. Also, choosing a plain, fresh reception will look great and save you cash on those annoyingly-unnecessary, little extra which you won't really need or use.If you have paid the wedding venue for cases of wine to go with the wedding breakfast, check how many are actually used; if you have any 'leftovers' at the end of the repast, they can be placed behind the bar during the evening, thus saving not only your own budget but also your guests pounds and pounds.Instead of buying flowers for both your ceremony and reception, purchase one bulk-load of wedding flowers and use them for both! After the ceremony, ask a member of staff or a bridesmaid to help move them across to the reception while you are having your photographs taken.Fourthly, use your wedding cake as dessert to avoid paying for an additional course.Ask for some jugs of cream to be brought out after the final course; then, dish up the cake!

When McCrae wrote 'In Flanders' Field'NEXT year sees the centenary of the outbreak of World War I (1914-18), pitting, initially, the forces of Great Britain, France, Italy and Tsarist Russia
against Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Ottoman Turkey.
Canadian doctor, Joel McCrae, was serving with his country's Armed Forces, and, having seen the poppy survive the bloody conflicts in Northern France and so deeply moved by what he saw, he scribbled the following verses in his pocket-book in 1915:In Flanders' fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses row on row,That mark our place: and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders' fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe;To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high,If ye break the faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders' fields.
McCrae's poem was later published in 'Punch' magazine under the title,
"In Flanders' Fields", and the people of Britain and the Empire were able to learn, at first hand, what the war in France and in the terrible trenches really was like!Three years later, McCrae was to die in a military hospital on the French coast.Shortly before his demise (with the British coastline visible on the horizon and the words of the poem in his mind), he is said to have murmured: "Tell them this, if ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep."On the Eleventh Hour of the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month in 1918, the First World War (which began in 1914) finally ended.Millions had died;

many more millions had been injured and scarred by their experiences. Those, who had survived (both men and women), returned to their homes, but, for them, the world would never be the same. The people whom they had left behind had learned to manage without them.
Throughout Britain and the Empire, there were men and women - old beyond their years - trying to fit back into an unrecognisable normality.Moina Michael, an American war secretary with the YMCA
and herself a writer of verse, was moved by McCrae's work and had written:And now the torch and Poppy redWear in honour of our dead.Miss Michael bought red poppies with money that had been given to her by work-colleagues, and, wearing one of them, sold the
remainder to her friends to raise a small amount of money for needy servicemen. Her French colleague, Madame Guerin (encouraged by what Moina Michael had achieved with the poppy emblem) proposed the making of artificial poppies and suggested their sale to the Legion in August, 1921, in order to help the ex-Service community in Britain.
And it was thus that the movement started!

"Awelcoming, happy&safeenvironment"earnsOfstedpraiseSINCE it opened in April of this year, The Manor House at Knutton, in Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough, has garnered praise from parents and their children.
Now, this approval has been officially confirmed by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills), following its inspection on Thursday, August 1st, 2013.
Regarding 'the quality and standards of the early years provision' at The Old Rectory Manor House, the Ofsted report describes this as 'Good' (Grade 2), stating: "Practitioners have high expectations for children and a good awareness of how young children learn. This ensures that each child makes good progress from their starting points and they are prepared for school."
It continues: "Staff create a welcoming, happy and safe environment where children settle well, enjoy themselves and develop close relationships with their peers and the adults working with them.
"Children demonstrate that they feel safe as they are confident in new situations, independently carry out self-care routines and safely manage their own risks in the outdoor learning environment."
The Ofsted report lauds "Strong, focused leadership", that "communicates high expectations to the staff team, which is effectively monitored to ensure that children's learning and development needs are met and
the setting sustains continued improvement."
Located on Knutton High Street, The Manor House occupies The Old School House (as its name suggests, a converted school building), and serves a wide area, welcoming all children.
It operates from two, open-plan, age-specific play-areas, a sensory room and soft-play room, and there are enclosed areas available for outdoor play.
The nursery employs five members of childcare staff (with four holding appropriate, early years' qualifications at level 3 and one at level 5).
The nursery opens from Monday to Friday all year round, with sessions running from 7.30am until 6pm.
Children attend for a variety of sessions, and there are currently 19 of them on-roll.
The nursery provides funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-old children.
The Old Manor opened earlier this year, as a result of public demand, following the enormous acclamation enjoyed by The Old Rectory Kindergarten (lauded as 'Outstanding' in all areas), at Waterloo Road, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.

ALAN Ayckbourn is, once again, "the man of the moment", as his comedy, 'Time of My Life', is played at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre this month.
First produced at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, and, then, at the Vaudeville in London's West End, this is one of Ayckbourn's most popular plays.
He is the world's most performed, living English language playwright), and 'Time of My Life' is regularly presented in Britain and abroad, but this is the first major revival directed by the author himself.
"...that was proably one of the best, the happiest moments of our lives. Only the trouble with those sort of moments is that you seldom ever realise that they are - until they've gone."
It is Laura Stratton's birthday, and, to celebrate the event, her husband, Gerry, their two sons and their partners are gathered for an evening out in the family's favourite restaurant.
The dinner turns out to be a significant moment in all their lives, with repercussions for years to come.
Although regularly presented in Britain and abroad, this is the play's first major revival by Ayckbourn himself.
Commented Ayckbourn: "This is one of my very JB Priestley-esque plays. It deals with time and is very much about living for the moment: how we sometimes fail to realise where we are in our lives - if only we had stopped and just looked around for a moment."
The company (John Branwell, Rachel Caffrey, Sarah Parks, Emily Pithon,
Ben Porter, James Powell and Richard Stacey) is also appearing in Ayckbourn's latest play, 'Arrivals and Departures', which is at the New Vic from Thursday, October 10th, to Saturday, October 26th, and 'Farcicals' (two short, one-act linked pieces, 'The Kidderminster Affair' [Friday, October 11th, and Saturday, October 19th], and 'Chlo"e With Love' [Saturdays, October 12th and 19th]).
'Time of My Life' runs from Tuesday, October 8th, to Saturday, October 26th, at 7.30pm, with a 2.15pm matinee performance on Saturday 19th.

ALAN Ayckbourn brings his latest world premiere production, 'Arrivals & Departures', direct to the New Vic, Newcastle, fresh from his home theatre in Scarborough this month.
At a London mainline rail terminus, an elaborate trap is deployed in an attempt to capture a dangerous and elusive terrorist, codenamed 'Cerastes'.
Major Quentin Sexton and his hand-picked SSDO (Strategic Simulated Distractional Operations) Unit are poised , ready to pounce.
To assist them, civilian witness, Barry Hawkins, and his 'minder', Ez Swain, are on-hand to confirm final identification. The question is: is the Major's so-called elite unit all it's cracked up to be?
In addition, his key witness turns out to be a garrulous, suspiciously unreliable traffic warden and the minder, a troubled, young female soldier with severe attitudinal problems.
What can possibly go wrong?!
Said Ayckbourn: "'Arrivals and Departures' evolved from the idea of telling a story through memories. Nowadays, one of the interests for me as a writer is to surprise and intrigue the audience through the way you tell the story, as much as the story itself.
"There aren't that many new stories to tell: it's only in the way they are narrated that the story becomes new."
The production runs alongside Ayckbourn's 1992 hit, 'Time of My Life' (which is at the New Vic from Tuesday, October 8th, to Saturday, October 26th), and 'Farcicals', two, short, one-act linked pieces ('The Kidderminster Affair' [on Friday, October 11th, and Saturday, October 12th] and 'Chlo"e with Love' [Saturdays, October 12th and 19th]).
"Alan Ayckbourn may have nothing left to prove, but, clearly, he has much yet to say," enthused The New York Times.
'Arrivals & Departures' runs from Thursday, October 10th, to Saturday, October 26th, at 7.30pm, with a 2.15pm matinee performance on Saturday 26th.

AUTUMN simply wouldn't be the same without a trip to Blackpool's world-famous 'Northern Lights' - its Illuminations!2013's magical Blackpool Illuminations were switched on by Jonathan 'Wossy' Ross on Friday, August 30th, and will continue until Sunday, November 3rd.And there's an added bonus - however readers choose to enjoy this dazzling display, you are guaranteed a sparkling night - whatever the weather!Blackpool's Illuminations have been a major part of the seaside resort's attractions since 1879, when they were described as 'Artificial Sunshine', and have become a guiding light for visitors to the resort. The brightest night of all in Blackpool is the 'Big Switch-On', when thousands of people gather to witness the first, illuminating night of the season and the pulling of that famous switch. In 2010, it was Stoke-on-Trent's own Robbie Williams who 'did the honours', supported by operatic sensation, Russell Watson, returning to his native Lancashire, bringing home the famous 'Voice', which has performed throughout the world. On every night of the season, the Illuminations retain the magic and excitement which every visitor experiences on his or her first trip through 'The Lights' as a child. The styles and technology are, however, constantly adapting to address the green issues of conservation and energy-efficiency.Since 2002, more LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) and fixtures have been the standard for all-new and up-graded features: these are the most efficient, available means of generating light, and are, now, used in over 30% of the show.
Blackpool Illuminations use only 'green' electricity from renewable resources, comprising wind, small-scale hydro, landfill and Bio-Gas.The procurement of 'green' electricity has reduced the annual Illuminations carbon dioxide emissions to zero, a saving of 420 tonnes in the atmosphere per year! The event is pushing for carbon neutrality, and, in May, 2007, two wind-turbines were introduced on the South Promenade, linked directly to the Illumination supply. These two turbines will generate 3% of the power needed, and more are planned (the team is also exploring other renewable options, including solar power, to ensure a bright, 'green' future! Why not make a weekend of it and visit the resort's top attractions, enjoy some 'retail therapy' and take advantage of the town's great bars and restaurants? For assistance with booking accommodation in Blackpool, or further details about what's on, visit www.visitblackpool.com or call the Tourist Information Centre on (01253) 478222.

"The only price we give you is our best price"ABH INSTALLATIONS Ltd. is a newly-established, family-run, local business, with over 25 years' combined experience in the trade. The plan of co-directors, Adam and Ben Howle, is to be as professional and as well-equipped as the larger companies in the industry, while keeping costs at a price to compete with individuals who operate directly out of their vans.
Both Adam and Ben have progressed from a fitting background, and have watched the standard traditional
double-glazing salesman work his pitch with inflated initial prices to deceive the customer into thinking that they are getting a bargain, while, in reality, they are still paying over the odds.
THIS IS WHERE ABH'S APPROACH DIFFERS!
"We promise a free, no-hassle, no-pressure, quick and easy quote, which we are very confident that you will not beat in terms of quality or value, and standard of job that we know you will be very happy with," said Adam.
ABH is fully insured and guaranteed, so there is no need to worry that it is fairly newly-established, since Adam and Ben are determined to be around
for many years to come!
Readers are assured of the company's professionalism, quality and commitment to ensuring that all customers are happy with all its fittings.
If you require further information or wish to discuss any work you may be interested in, feel free to call in at ABH's office at 6, William Clowes Street, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent; telephone (01782) 815799; have a look at the website: www.abhinstallations.co.uk; or drop Adam and Ben an email at [email protected]

Are you sitting comfortably?THERE'S nothing more dispiriting than a sad, sagging, tired old sofa!
However, there are a few, easy tricks which readers can use to effect a quick rejuvenation of that particular piece of furniture.
First, a thorough clean can work wonders: start by vacuuming (you could, of course, discover a host of coins and money-notes tucked down the back!).
If it is covered in pet-hair, don a dampened rubber-glove and run it over the furniture, using large strokes in the direction of the pile ('sticky tape' or a lint-roller may also help).
Next, check the care-label and clean the cushion-covers, according to the instructions.
The frame will need to be cleaned with leather- or upholstery- shampoo (again, follow the instructions on the pack).
If the seat-cushions are sagging, insert a thin piece of fire-proof foam inside the cushion-cover.
Alternatively, get new foam-cushions cut or buy a block and cut them yourself.
For scratches on leather, use shoe-polish or even a felt-tip pen (but test in an inconspicuous area first).
Harness the power of hedgerows this WinterROSEHIPS are a common sight in British hedgerows, adding a splash of colour to Autumnal walks.
New research is showing that the humble rosehip could also have a role to play in our health and, possibly, an important addition to medicine cabinets this Winter.
The latest in a string of studies on rosehips shows that extracts from the fruit may exhibit positive health benefits for the kidneys, and other recent ones have indicated that, as well as Vitamin C, helping to protect the body against oxygen-free radicals.
Further studies, published in leading journals, have further shown that rosehip extracts may help modulate certain aspects of the immune system, and also suggested
that they could act as anti-inflammatory agents and even prevent kidney-stones.
Fortunately, you no longer have to go out into the cold and wet to pick your own rosehips, because an innovative health company has created three, nutritional rosehip syrups, which have been specially formulated to help maintain women's health.
The Belle+ range includes three rosehip syrupswith added Vitamin D, especially important for those short Winter days (Vitamin D is also known as the 'sunshine vitamin'), iron or omega 3.
(Please note: if pregnant or breast-feeding, please consult a health expert, before using Belle+ products).
The syrups are priced from just £5.75 for 200ml and are easy to incorporate into your everyday diet.

of these matters. The staff at JBM Memorials are committed to making your choice of memorial as easy and stress-free as possible, and home-visits are available, on request, for people's convenience. They do this by providing the general public with high-quality stone masonry; offering an outstanding level of traditional, hand-carved craftsmanship; and have many headstone memorials on show in the workshop. All types of monumental and stonework are undertaken, wonderfully complemented by cleaning and restoration work and second inscriptions.Using granite, slate, marble, limestone and York stone, the business's range of products also includes pet memorials, crematorium plaques and stone renovation work.Supplying everything from gravestones to individual design memorials, JBM Memorials has two shop-outlets with a showroom and workshop.
Combining driving-skillsAS this month progresses, one major illumination (other than the miles of lights offered at Blackpool) to strike a motorist's consciousness is the fact that the season of Autumn is not all THAT far away! This, in turn, re-emphasises the absolute necessity of safe driving - but what (I hear you ask) is, EXACTLY, 'safe driving'?!It involves many factors, and a involves a combination of each driver's physical skills, knowledge and attitude to motoring. To drive safely, you need to think and act decisively: this requires information, which, in turn, demands that you make sense of what you look at!Advances in modern technology mean that most people can learn to drive and pass a driving-test, regardless of their physical disabilities. But, while cars can be specially adapted to meet the requirements of the disabled, there is, unfortunately, no such help available for partially-sighted people, unless glasses or contact-lenses will do the trick. When people take the practical part of their driving test, the examiner checks that their eyesight meets the minimum legal standard by asking them to read a car's number-plate from a distance of at least 20.5 metres (67 feet).Examinees are allowed to wear spectacles or contact-lenses, if necessary, but, if you have any doubts about your ability to meet the eyesight requirements easily, seek advice from an optician before you start to drive.

Introducing the New ManagerTHE Plough Inn is delighted to introduce customers old and new to our General Manager, Phil McCumesky.Phil has been at The Plough Inn for over nine years as its accomplished Head Chèf. He is a family man and brings with him to the team his lovely wife, Trish, and three grown-up sons.Phil worked for many years as the personal Chèf to the Saudi Royal Family and on yachts around Australia for the Grundy Family, creating fine cuisine and specialist menus, and serving, at times, 1,500 people per night!Phil intends to keeping all the trimmings and friendly service that customers know and love, and will be updating some of our services to offer more patrons, including Events, Live Music, Accommodation, Refurbishing, Function Re-Packaging and Special Offers."I am delighted to take on the Manager's role here at The Plough, and I am passionate about our Venue and our Customers. We aim to provide you with Delicious Food, Fine Wines and Exceptional Service in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere," Phil told us.
When asked about the changes to The Plough he intends to make, he said: "It's already a beautiful venue: I simply aim to polish off the rough edges that always arise with time passing."I would like to hold more events, including Live Music, and I am currently working on a better, modern and updated website. Our Christmas Menus will be available soon, and we will be holding Party Nights throughout December."The Plough Inn has a long history, going back to the 1600s, when it was built as a coaching inn. In those days, the beer used to be bought up in jugs from the cellar and served to travellers in the lamp-lit bar and cosy snug. The Inn has been been modernised in recent years, but the ancient oak-beams, small alcoves and log-burning stoves are still in place to make this a cosy, intimate place for a quiet drink or a meal. The old Barn Restaurant, with its exposed timber-beams makes a beautiful setting for a Wedding, Family Event or Meal with friends in its beautiful interior. It's certainly come a long way since it started life in Wales as a store cattle-feed!The Plough is situated in Eaton, near Congleton, close to the M6, Peak National Park and various sites of interest.

A superb background of experience
IT may be just over 2 years since Clive Harris added a second 'component' to his Staffordshire-based company, but he certainly possesses the necessary pedigree to ensure total customer-satisfaction!
For, appositely-named Expert Car Inspections benefits from Clive's 40 years' experience within the motor trade - starting with an indentured apprenticeship and gaining his City & Guilds qualifications, to a 28-years-long service with VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), the Government regulatory body, working on many aspects of vehicle-maintenance and compliance.
All this has given Clive an invaluable amount of expertise in facets of the motor trade - experience which, sadly, many people carrying out these types of inspections lack.
In addition, staff working for him boast similar (or very experienced) backgrounds, and their quality-of-work is regularly checked to ensure that each customer enjoys a consistent experience.
As a result, motorists are reassuringly secure in the knowledge that any vehicle inspected by ECI will be subjected to a rigorous inspection, assuring customers that a comprehensive report will be compiled to allow them to enter into a purchase or sale fully informed.
Complete car inspections are available - all carried out by fully-trained
and highly-experienced staff - from as little as £80.
However, ECI's remit also takes in vans (up to 3,500kg), motor homes and HG (Heavy Goods) and PC (Passenger Carrying) vehicles.
Complementing all the experience possessed by ECI is the business's simple pricing-structure, which means that you can be confident that an expert is carrying out the inspection at realistic, eminently-affordable rates!
While car inspections start from £80 (£130 for 4x4s, classic cars and limousines), the price for vans is £80 (up to 2,999kg) and £100 (3,000-3,500kg), with the rate motorhomes £170 (up to 3,500kg) and £210 (all other motorhomes).
Full engineer's reports on cars and vans are available for just £150, and those for motorhomes, HGVs and PCVs cost only £170.
Expert Car Inspections is an arm of the parent company, CCH Vehicle & Training Services, a consultancy which Clive launched during April, 2008, and provides an invaluable service not to the MoT garage-network and operators of heavy goods and passenger-carrying vehicles (the latter including Arriva Midlands).
At the same time, it is also contracted to a very large number of garages operating the annual MoT Scheme, ensuring that they operate within the parameters laid down in the MoT Testing Regulations and the operating guidelines dicated by VOSA.
