With Arise Season 1 coming to an end,
we need to continue our Call to Action
as we have done each week of Arise.
Some suggestion are:
1. Commit yourself to daily morning and evening pray-
er using Christian Prayer (Liturgy of the Hours) or
something that works for you where you are on your
spiritual journey.
2. Become active in one of our parish ministries.
3. Cross yourself and pray a blessing on meals not just
at home but also when you are eating out.
4. Read Holy Scripture daily for at least 15 minutes.
Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, read slowly, meditate
on what the Scripture is saying to you. Perhaps even
explore Lectio Divina.
The last Sunday 5:30 p.m. student Mass for this
semester is December 2nd.

The Thanksgiving Food Drive—a success!! The Thanksgiving & Christmas Can Food Drive has two
parts: Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Thanksgiving
Can Food Drive brought in the needed 80 bags with
some left over for the Christmas project.
For us to fulfill our goal we will need the
remaining 50+ bags to be returned for the
Christmas Project.
Remaining bags may be left at the back of
the church or brought to the church office.
This is perhaps the most successful can food drive for
the “projects.” It wouldn’t have happened without
your support. Many hands-light work ☺
Thank-you!!!

Thank you to everyone who helped with the parish Thanksgiving project. Again, we far exceeded our
goal. Whether you helped locate needy families, packaged food, made a monetary donation, or helped deliver food to
our families, the response has been overwhelming and our community is blessed by your generosity.
Now it’s time to spread Christ’s light for Christmas! Look for “paper Christmas light cards” hanging around church.
Each card has a Christmas gift request on it. Take a card (or two!), purchase the item and return it (and the card) to
church or parish hall in the designated box by December 10. We’ll package the gifts for each family and deliver them
on Saturday, December 22 in time for Christmas.
Packaging work schedule will be coming soon if you want to help with that phase of the project. Contact Mary at
[email protected] or 936-295-6935.

hemos superado nuestro objetivo.
go de Navidad.
Contacte a Mary
Muchas
manos de trabajo ligero. ☺ Gracias!!
The Fire of Your Love: The Feast of Christ the King
By Will Oliver
Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, essentially both the end and the transition to a New Year in
our Church. Liturgically speaking, it marks the end of ordinary time, and our new liturgical year (Cycle C) begins
next week with the first Sunday of Advent. Relatively speaking, however, the Feast of Christ the King happens to be
one of the newer celebrations within our Church.
Pope Pius XI (1939-1958) instituted the Feast of Christ the King in 1925 through his encyclical Quas
Primas, which translates as “In the First.” At that time, the Church was facing the problem of people falling away
from the faith. Not only were many Christians beginning to doubt Christ's authority and existence, so too were many
Catholics, and many of them were also challenging the Church's power to continue Christ's authority.
By 1925, the Christian world had witnessed the rise of non-Christian dictatorships, especially in Europe, and
many Catholics were being taken in by these earthly leaders with their false promises; promises that sound good, but
never quite turn out the way everyone believes they will. These dictators often asserted their authority over the
Church, and many tried to eliminate its authority by eliminating the Church itself. One only has to look south of our
borders to 1926 when the Mexican Government attempted to do just that with the passage of the “Calles Laws” (¡Viva
Cristo Rey!).
Pius XI believed that the faithful had lost sight of who their true leader really was. If they stopped putting
faith in their dictators who promised them a better life if they gave themselves over to government, and instead put
their faith in Christ the King, they would know the truth and so remain faithful to the Church. So, just as the Feast
of Corpus Christi had been instituted when devotion to the Eucharist was at a low point in Church history, the Feast of
Christ the King was instituted during a time when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the feast was
needed most. And it is still needed today.
As Pius XI wrote in the closing of the encyclical, “[we] briefly enumerate the blessings which we hope and
pray may accrue to the Church, to society, and to each one of the faithful, as a result of the public veneration of the
Kingship of Christ. When we pay honor to the princely dignity of Christ, men will doubtless be reminded that the
Church, founded by Christ as a perfect society, has a natural and inalienable right to perfect freedom and immunity
from the power of the state . . . nations will be reminded by the annual celebration of this feast that not only private
individuals but also rulers and princes are bound to give public honor and obedience to Christ . . . The faithful,
moreover, by meditating upon these truths, will gain much strength and courage, enabling them to form their lives
after the true Christian ideal.”
On this Feast of Christ the King, remember that “He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him
are called and chosen and faithful” (Rev. 17:14).
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION
Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio
the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the
safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first
step restricts access to the church during liturgical services.
Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be
locked from the inside with the exception of the double
doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass
will only be able to enter the church through the 16th
Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church
through any of the locked doors as well as the doors
facing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the
church building to remind parishioners of the locked
doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the
safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We
are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize
any problematic incidents.
Estamos
seguros de que los pasos tomados minimiza-
rán incidentes problemáticos.
