STEWARDSHIP: SHARING TIME, TALENT, TREASURE, and PRAYER
“Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” - Matthew 25:13
Many of us have put off doing something because we think we are too busy. We’ve all said, “I’ll do it later when I have time.” Unfortunately, too many of us apply this attitude to our faith.
Jesus’s call is urgent, in the here and now, in your current circumstances. Don’t delay. How is God calling you to use your gifts today? None of us is guaranteed tomorrow.

RETREAT: WALKING THE SACRED PATH
We are so pleased to offer you the opportunity for a retreat this Advent! The program we are using is Walking the Sacred Path from liturgical composer Dan Schutte. This retreat is designed to be of particular relevance to this time of uncertainty and isolation. The mostly-virtual retreat will extend over a three-week period. Each week, participants will receive a link to recorded video sessions with Dan on a specific topic. There will be a workbook and journal to accompany the videos. On each of three consecutive Sundays, all retreat participants who are available and comfortable doing so will be invited to meet as a group in the Parish Hall to discuss each week's topic. The third Sunday's discussion will conclude with a live Zoom session with Dan Schutte. The dates of the meetings are Nov. 29, Dec. 6, and Dec. 13. All will begin at 10:15 a.m. (after 9 a.m. Mass). To register for the retreat, please visit https://forms.gle/pJuZwSoueU2p97P77. There is no cost to participate. At the end of the registration form, you will have the opportunity to make a donation to offset the cost of the retreat, if you would like. To register by phone or if you have any questions, please contact Mary Regan at 314-481-1133, #2, or [email protected].
GOOD NEWS
I was recently driving along Wilmington and n iced the speed humps by St. Stephen’s church and school. Upon inquiry, I was told that Alderwoman Beth Murphy was able to get these installed at no cost to the parish. It’s nice to see local government working to the be erment and safety our children and the community. As we all know, St. Stephen’s is the anchor the neighborhood. Sincerely, Kathy Imbs Banker (Class 1965)
ONE WARM COAT DRIVE
The coat drive is over. Thank you for your generosity! We collected 156 coats and received $65 in cash donations. Each dollar donated means a coat for someone, so that is an additional 65 coats — bringing our grand total to 221 coats. That is fantastic! Two hundred twenty-one people will be warm this winter because of your generosity. Thank you to Felicia Spencer for spearheading the coat drive!
SPONSOR A FAMILY THIS CHRISTMAS
No one can predict what the holidays will look like this year, but St. Patrick Center will continue to serve people who are homeless or are facing homelessness by providing holiday gifts through its Christmas Wishes program. You are invited to sponsor a family this holiday season. Find out more at https://stpatrickcenter.org/christmaswishes.

TEMPERATURE SCREENS AT MASS
As you know, COVID-19 cases are rising in our region. You are likely accustomed to having your temperature taken when visiting a doctor’s office or other places where you share space with others for an extended time. Beginning with Masses on the weekend of Nov. 14-15, our ushers will be taking a quick temperature scan of everyone as they arrive at church, for the safety of all in attendance. Thank you for your continued cooperation!

are illicit. It’s not that our desires or pleasures are bad or immoral, it’s rather that they can seductively dominate or crowd out time and space for prayer. If we are unable to say “no” to them, we can find ourselves enslaved by these pleasures through our rationalized excuses for them. 3. Love in action. I read this recently, “A study from Yale said the best way to deal with stress is to do a small act of generosity for someone else.” Our stress levels can be diminished when we diffuse someone else’s stress. This is difficult for us, indeed, but not impossible! This difficulty that we all experience is the Titanic-sized effort to shift the focus of our lives away from “me” and onto “you.” In this way, we can become the hands and feet of Jesus wherever we go. When I see my two photos lying side by side, I am inspired by the one I took in the evening because of the light that is shining out. I have imagined and prayed that my life could look more like that — a warm, inviting light that shines into the darkness, out onto others from within my soul. But it is not my light that I created myself, it is the light of Jesus’ love shining upon me and through me. In order for this light to be received and shared, there needs to be a darkness. A paradox ensues, the darker the night of our senses, the brighter the light of Jesus’ love can shine through.
Br. John-Marmion Villa LPi Connect!, November 2020
One dark night, fired with love’s urgent longings — ah, the sheer grace! — I went out unseen, my house being now all stilled. In darkness and secure, by the secret ladder, disguised, — ah, the sheer grace! — in darkness and concealment, my house being now all stilled. On that glad night, in secret, for no one saw me, nor did I look at anything, with no other light or guide than the one that burned in my heart.
excerpt of The Dark Night, poem by St. John of the Cross
THE LIGHT AND THE DARK
Recently, I was taking photographs of our small chapel here at the monastery. As a novice photographer, I find myself challenged to find new angles to create fresh compositions. I decided to focus on the Chapel when it was lit during the day by sunlight and then again in the evening light of the moon. What I found was quite insightful! The daytime photo is something that you might expect to find, spring flowers bursting with life in the morning sun, perfectly framing the exterior façade of the chapel. The evening photo was quite different, the full moon was casting shadows of the trees everywhere; I decided to open the double doors of the Chapel and to turn on the interior lights. The eyes of the viewer are immediately drawn to the light piercing through the darkness of twilight to the warm invitation coming from the Chapel. In our Gospel text, it is midnight when the cry is heard. It is dark outside, and the wedding party falls asleep. These two details — midnight and sleep — are frequently spoken of in monastic spiritualty. They describe the same reality: hesychia is often translated as sacred stillness. This nighttime stillness of soul puts to sleep the ever-restless cravings of our five senses which have a tendency to be dominated by the present culture of immediate gratification and sensory stimulation. When the cravings are tempered, the soul is more apt to perceive the deeper realities of the sacred mysteries, which are oftentimes described as being enshrouded in a darkness. How can we learn to temper our five senses, then, in order to help our souls be more attentive to the arrival of the Bridegroom? 1. The Jesus Prayer, often found in Eastern Christian literature, the constant repetition of the phrase, “Lord Jesus, son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner,” can have a dual effect. It can calm our agitation, and it can focus our attention. Learning to pray The Jesus Prayer with a trusted guide can be a helpful tool in learning to remain calm and focused throughout the day. 2. Ascetical Practice, which is nothing more than learning how to say “no” to pleasures and desires which
Survey: Christmas Mass at St. Stephen
November 8, 2020 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Liturgy Committee is looking toward Christmas! We will celebrate our Novenas from December 17 through 23 at 7 p.m. We will offer single-use worship
aids and candles and maintain the social distancing that we have been doing at Masses.
The church will be decorated as beautifully as ever.
While we will not have our adult or children's choirs singing in person at our Christmas Masses, we do
have plans to create and share prelude and Mass music in different ways, within current safety protocols.
Our seating in church will be limited, as it has been for all of our Masses since June. We will use our usual
Mass sign up format so that you will know your place is reserved at the time you register. In order to
accommodate everyone who wants to attend Christmas Mass, we are asking now about your plans so that we
can adjust accordingly.
We would also like to gauge your openness to worshiping in the Parish Center with the Mass live
streamed on the projection screen, in the event there is high interest in a particular Mass time. Eucharistic
ministers would distribute communion there. Please consider whether worshiping in the Parish Center would be
an acceptable option for you.
Please respond by Monday, Nov. 9. You can drop paper responses in the collection basket at Mass or at the
rectory. The survey is also available online at https:/ /forms.gle/21EQ39wFoSdWPCZ27 . You are welcome to
share the survey link with anyone who normally attends our Christmas Mass but may not learn of this survey
through our communications channels. The more feedback we have, the better!

All Saints Day -- November 1 This year All Saints Day fell on a Sunday. This Solemnity takes precedence, so the readings were of All Saints Day, not the Sunday readings. Typically we think of saints as those who have been canonized. However, All Saints Day celebrates all those who have attained heaven, named and unnamed. According to the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, "the Communion of Saints includes the faithful on earth, the souls in Purgatory, and the blessed in heaven."
All Souls Day -- November 2 The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) Day is, as its name says, a day on which we honor those who have died. At SSP, during the month of November, we display the Book of Remembrance. This book contains the names of the deceased of the parish. Parishioners are invited to add the name of a loved one who has died in the past year. The names remain in the book once they are entered. A bit of trivia -- In the past on All Souls Day, the poor begged for food and promised to pray for the dead in return. They called the little cakes they received "soul cakes." These were cakes with a hole in the center, making a circle, representing eternity. If you have a question about the Catholic faith you would like addressed, contact Mary Regan at314-481-1133, #2, or [email protected]. If Mary doesn't know the answer, she’ll try to find it. All questions will respect the privacy of the questioner, who will remain anonymous.
THE GIVING TREE
Since we have not all returned to church yet, we wanted to offer you some different options if you choose to participate in the Giving Tree program this year. The tree will still be in the back of church for you to pick a leaf beginning on Saturday, Nov. 7. You can place your donation under the tree as you have in the past. Or you can choose from the list below. Cindy Asinger will be on the bell tower parking lot on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. to collect your donations. Should you choose to donate a gift card, you can either drop it in the collection basket in an envelope marked “Giving Tree,” or you can mail it to Cindy at 4130 Malcolm Drive, St. Louis, MO 63125. Your sacrifice and generosity have always been appreciated by St. Martha’s Hall for Abused Women and Children and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.
