At St. Stephen Protomartyr we know that
we are not perfect, but we strive to grow
closer to God in all that we do.
Our faith is Christ-Centered, saturated
with sacred scripture, holy Tradition,
authentic, profound, and ancient - yet
completely relevant.
As a community we understand that we
must know, love and serve God and all
people in order to become balanced and
complete. This call to profound personal
intimacy is beautiful and real; both
solemn and joyful at the same time.
What’s a Byzantine - Ukrainian Catholic
Church?
Byzantine Christians are those whose
traditions, theology and spirituality flow
from the early Church in the Middle East
and Eastern Europe. Most Eastern
Christians are commonly called
Orthodox.
Byzantine Catholics are those who
proudly maintain their rich Eastern
(Orthodox) liturgical, spiritual and
theological ways, and yet are in full
communion with the Roman Catholic
Church. We recognize the leadership of
the Pope of Rome, but are not ourselves
Roman Catholic.
Our liturgical life is rich with meaning
and actions, that speak to our whole
beings. Much of our worship remains
unchanged from that of our Fathers and
Mothers of the early centuries of
Christianity.
At St. Stephen Protomartyr, ALL PEOPLE
ARE WELCOME who wish to live a
Christian and Catholic way of life,
regardless of their ethnic, economic,
history or any other backgrounds. We
are part of God’s Holy Church, here to
joyfully lead the life taught by the Risen
Christ, reaching out with love and
proclaiming His word to all people for
the glory of God.
If you are spiritually hungry, and if you
are looking for a vibrant community to
grow with, we welcome you to check us
out at <protomartyr.ca> or visit us in
person. We look forward to getting to
know you.

Arcātheos is a Catholic boys' camp, which endeavors to offer additional
formation in the journey towards authentic manhood. This task has not been approached lightly, as you will see from the collaborative efforts of the team who help make this possi-ble. This experience is for those who yearn to take on the adventures of life, with the heroic nature afforded them. For many, it has become a “rite of passage," where boys gain confi-dence in their journey to become men of God. Many prove themselves through tests of strength, knowledge, skill and virtue, in hopes of being elevated to the “Council of Knights." Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
Troparia and Kontakia
Troparion: Angelic powers were upon Your tomb* and the guards became like dead men;* Mary stood before Your tomb* seeking Your most pure body.* You captured Hades without being overcome by it.* You met the Virgin and granted life.* O Lord, risen from the dead,* glory be to You!
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
Kontakion, Tone 6: With His life-giving hand* Christ our God, the Giver of life,* raised all the dead from the murky abyss* and bestowed resurrection upon humanity.* He is for all the Saviour,* the resurrection and the life, and the God of all.
Now and for ever and ever. Amen.
Theotokion, Tone 6: Undaunted patroness of Christians,* O steadfast intermediary with the Creator,* turn not away from the suppliant voices of sinners,* but in your kindness come to help us who cry out to you in faith.* Be quick to intercede, make haste to plead,* for you are ever the patroness of those who honour you, O Mother of God.
Prokeimenon
Save Your people, O Lord, * and bless Your inheritance.
verse: Unto You I will cry, O Lord, my God, lest You turn from me in silence.
Save Your people, O Lord, * and bless Your inheritance.
Epistle Romans 15:1-7
B rothers and Sisters, we who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the
weak, and not to please ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbour for the good purpose of building up the neighbour. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is
written, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
At the end of the Epistle parents may send their children to the back of the church to get candles
for the reading of the Holy Gospel.
Alleluia
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
verse: He who lives in the aid of the Most High, shall dwell under the protection of the God of heaven.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
verse: He says to the Lord: You are my protec-tor and my refuge, my God, in Whom I hope.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Gospel Matthew 9:27-35
A t that time, Jesus was passing on, two blind men followed him, crying out and
saying "Have pity on us, Son of David!" And when he had reached the house, the blind men came to him. And Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I can do this to you?" They answered him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "Let it be done to you according to your faith." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus strictly charged them, saying, "See that no one knows of this!" But they went out and spread his fame abroad throughout all that district. Now as they were going out, behold, there was brought to him a

dumb man possessed by a devil. And when the devil had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never has the like of this been seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "By the prince of devils he casts out devils." And Jesus was going about all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching
the Good News of the kingdom, and curing every kind of disease and infirmity in the people.

Sayings of the Church Fathers
H ow many myriads there are of evil demons and how numberless are their
varied wiles! They urge us to speak evil of one another, or, speaking sweet
words, to conceal bitterness in our hearts, to criticize the outer aspect of our
brother, while we harbor a wild beast in ourselves, to quarrel among ourselves and op-
pose one another, wishing to have our own way and appear as the most upright. Every
man who enjoys sinful thoughts falls willingly when he welcomes (as in sympathy with)
the suggestions of the enemies and when he expects to justify himself solely by his visible
deeds, while within he is the abode of the spirit of wickedness, who teaches him every
evil. The body of such a man will be full of shameful uncleanness - for he becomes a prey
to devilish passions, which he does not repulse from himself. Demons are not visible bod-
ies, but we become their bodies when our souls accept dark thoughts from them. For,
having accepted these thoughts, we accept the demons themselves and make them bodily
manifest.
It is known that the body has three kinds of carnal movements. The first is a natural
movement, inherent in it, which does not produce anything (sinful, burdening the con-
science) without the consent of the soul and merely lets it be known that it exists in the
body. The second kind of movement in the body is produced by too abundant food and
drink, when the resulting heat in the blood stimulates the body to fight against the soul
and urges it towards impure lusts. Wherefore the Apostle says: "be not drunk with wine,
wherein is excess" (Ephesians 5:18). In the same way the Lord commands His disciples in
the Gospels: "take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with
surfeiting, and drunkenness" (Luke 21:34). And those who are monks, and are zealous to
achieve the full measure of sanctity and purity, should take particular care always to keep
themselves such that they can say with the Apostle, "I keep under my body, and bring it
into subjection" (1 Corinthians 9:27). The third movement comes from the evil spirits, who
thus tempt us out of envy and try to weaken those who have found purity (who are al-
ready monks), or to lead astray from the path those who wish to enter into the door of
purity (that is, those who are as yet on the threshold of monkhood). However, if a man
arms himself with patience and an unswerving faithfulness to the commandments of God,
the Holy Spirit will teach his mind how to purify his soul and body from such movements.

To the parents of our young children
may we suggest…
Relax! God put the wiggle in children;
don’t feel you have to suppress it in
God’s house. But do prevent them from
kicking people in the pews.
Sit towards the front where it is easier to
see and hear.
Quietly explain the parts of the Liturgy
to your children.
Sing the hymns, pray and voice the re-
sponses. Children learn liturgical
behaviours by copying you.
If you need to leave Liturgy with your
child, please feel free to do so, but
please come back. You can also take
advantage of the “cry room”.
Remember that the way we welcome
children in church directly affects the
way they respond to Church, to God and
to Christ. Let them know that they are
at home in this sacred space.
We love pew art! Please use the blank
papers and colouring sheets provided in
the “cry room” (not pew envelopes) for
your child to draw us some
beautiful art. We can hang them on our
parish bulletin boards for all to enjoy.
Do your best to attend Liturgy on time.
In fact we’d love it if you would come up
to the priests before service and give
them a “high five”. When kids know the
priest they feel more
comfortable.
To the members of our parish…
A smile of encouragement is always
welcome to parents with small, active
children.
MASSIVE CHURCH CLEAN-UP - DON’T FORGET!!
On July 4 - 8, 2016, we will be cleaning out all the corners, cupboards, closets and storage rooms in the whole church.
We ask all groups and Individuals to:
Clean up your stuff in the whole building prior to this date. (Make sure you can access all your gear, equipment, paper, binders, files etc. by booking the room and time you will be in to clean with the Office Administrator)
Get a pink “cleaned & sorted” paper from the main office, fill it out, and tape it on all the stuff you have cleaned up and want to keep.
Things without a pink “cleaned & sorted” paper attached to them will be assumed abandoned or for general church use. These non-labeled items will then be gone through and dealt with as the cleaners / organizers see fit.
We may ask you (your organization/ministry) to move your stuff to a particular area to keep things orderly. (For example: Sunday School stuff should be together in the Class Rooms, Knights stuff in the Knight’s storage area, Choir stuff in the choir loft, etc…)
Thanks for your cooperation!

I ’m writing this reflection piece on a Saturday night, as one of the
many loose ends to tie up before leaving on my appointed sabbatical.
(Actually, I gotta lot of loose ends—more than I anticipated. So many papers!
And boxes of KraftD and Girl Guide cookies! But I digress.) When I looked
at the calendar some time ago, I realized July 1st (official start date of sabbati-
cal) is so close to Sunday, July 3rd, that it seemed best to look forward to cel-
ebrating services, preaching, and seeing everyone one last time, as opposed to
quietly “sneaking out the door” on the previous Friday.
That’s because there is an almost unspeakable beauty and dignity when we
stand before the altar of God in the Divine Liturgy—me, as His unworthy
priest, and you, as the priesthood of all believers.
Thank you to many for this incredible opportunity and life-changing experi-
ence of eleven months’ planned sabbatical. I will be back June 1st 2017.
My website blog will have all the latest news and pictures. Check out
<www.sviaschenik.com>
My cellphone will be off for the most part; please consider refraining from tex-
ting or calling after August 24th as I will be either in retreat at Combermere, or
on the road, or in San Francisco, or finally in Rome and Ukraine.
My personal email address is the best and preferred way to get in touch, at
<[email protected]> I do have Skype; look for me at
<markabayrock> and make a request to be added to my contact list.
All parish-based communications via email can continue as before, but natural-
ly will not be responded to and instead, will simply accumulate without issue.
Bishop David has clarified, in a recent email, how leadership continues in the
parish in my absence: “ … the parochial administrator [Fr Bohdan Nahachew-
sky] has the same rights and obligations as the pastor [Fr Mark Bayrock]”,
has “… full responsibility for the parish during this time”, and is to “insure the
catechetical, liturgical, and pastoral life of the parish continues to thrive….”
God is good, all the time.
His goodness, mercy, love, forgiveness I will proclaim and honor all my days.
But your kindness to me and fellowship in prayer, as
the congregation of St Stephens, I will likewise honor
and cherish wherever I happen to be. Sundays I will
always lift you up to the Lord of Hosts.
Pray for me as I pray for you.
