The lecture, Hope: Dying Well, features Most Reverend

Juan Miguel Betancourt, Auxiliary Bishop of Hartford,

CT.

The talk will be preceded by Mass at 6:00 pm for the Solem-

nity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Holy Day

of Obligation.

There is no admission for the lecture, although there will be

a free-will offering basket to support the lecture series.

The next lecture, Charity: Loving Well, on August 29, features

Most Reverend Andrew Cozzens, Auxiliary Bishop of Saint

Paul and Minneapolis.

Esta conferencia: Esperanza: una Buena muerte, será pre-

sentada por el Reverendísimo Juan Miguel Betancourt, Obis-

po Auxiliar de Hartford CT.

La platica será antes de la Misa de las 6 pm por la solemni-

dad de la Asunción de la Virgen María, día santo de obliga-

ción.

No hay costo de admisión para la conferencia, aunque

Habrá una canasta de ofrenda voluntaria para apoyar las

serie de conferencias.

August 15 is the day that Catholics have long cele-

brated what is called the Dormition (falling asleep)

or Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Feast cele-

brates both the happy departure of Mary from this

life by her natural death, and her assumption bodily into

heaven. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII declared “It

is a dogma revealed by God that the Immaculate Mother

of God, Mary ever Virgin, when the course of her earthly

life was finished, was taken up body and soul into the

glory of heaven.” A dogma is one of the essential beliefs

of the Catholic faith. The Assumption is the oldest feast

day of Our Lady, and is the most important of all Marian

feasts.

feliz partida de María de su vida a través de su

muerte natural, y su asunción en cuerpo y alma al cielo. El

1 de noviembre de 1950, el Papa Pío XII declaró: “Es dog-

ma revelado por Dios que la Inmaculada Madre de Dios,

María siempre Virgen, cuando fue terminado el curso de

su vida en la tierra, fue llevada en cuerpo y alma a lo alto

de la Gloria del Cielo.” Un dogma es una de las verdades

de la fe católica. La Asunción es la fiesta más Antigua de

Nuestra Señora, y es la más importante de todas las fies-

tas marianas.

Shout Out from Fr. Adams Ongoing Formation

One of my mentors always asked us: “What are

you reading?” Over time I could tell this was a

much bigger question than I realized. Our mind is

like our stomach. It is hungry! And it is important

to feed it good and solid food. “Sow a thought,

reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a

habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a des-

tiny.” (RW Emerson) We have the capacity to become

great (or terrible!) in many ways on earth and into eternity!

It starts in our thoughts. Just as a good parent takes care

to feed their children healthy and beneficial food, so too

does Mother Church take care to form not only our bodies

but our souls. As priests, we are offered regular retreats

and days of reflection and study to keep learning and be-

ing formed so that we can better serve our people. We

need good spiritual reading and ways of taking in truth and

beauty so we can grow and help others to do so. I admit I

am not doing it perfectly. There is the constant temptation

to be lazy and especially eat the spiritual junk food of

whatever happens to be on social media, Netflix or the

news. But, the Lord renews his mercies every morning!

(Lam 3:23) Early on I was given advice to set aside 15

minutes a day for spiritual reading in addition to my daily

prayer time. You’d be amazed how fast you read a book

this way and how much you get out of doing it slowly and

deliberately. I always try to also read a small part of the

Old Testament and New Testament of the bible daily. At

the gym or in the car I often will listen a bit to a good talk

from EWTN.COM, FORMED.ORG or a YOUTUBE talk from

one of our great Catholic speakers/conferences. Then,

throw a good novel (fiction) in the mix as one our wise old

priests counseled us years ago.

Brothers and Sisters, I ask you the same question that has

helped me through the time: “What are you reading?” That

is, what is your mind, heart and soul chewing on and mari-

nating in? Is it good? Is it true? Is it beautiful? “You are

what you eat” as my grade school science project proved

to us long ago about our physical diet. The same goes for

our spiritual one. God bless you in Jesus and Mary.

Uno de mis maestros siempre nos preguntaba: “Que

estas leyendo? Con el tiempo me di cuenta de lo mu-

cho que significaba esta pregunta. Nuestra mente es

como nuestro estomago.¡ tiene hambre y hay que ali-

mentarlo con alimentos Buenos y sólidos!. “Siembra

un pensamiento, cosecha una acción, siembra una

acción, cosecha un habito, siembra un habito, cosecha un

personaje, siembra un personaje, cosecha un desti-

no.” (RW Emerson) ¡Tenemos la capacidad de ser grandes

(o terrible) de varias formas en la tierra y en la eternidad!

Comienza en nuestros pensamientos. Así como el buen

padre se ocupa de alimentar a su hijos con alimentos salu-

dables y beneficiosos, la madre Iglesia también se encar-

ga de formar no solo nuestro cuerpo sino también de

nuestra almas. Como sacerdotes se nos ofrecen retiros

regulares, días de reflexión y estudio para seguir apren-

diendo y formándonos para poder servir mejor a nuestra

gente. Necesitamos una Buena lectura espiritual y formas

de asimilar la verdad y la belleza y poder crecer y ayudar a

otros hacerlo. Admito que no lo estoy hacienda perfecta-

mente. Existe la constante tensión de ser perezoso y de

comer especialmente la comida chatarra spiritual que

ofrecen las redes sociales, Netflix o las noticias.¡ Pero el

Señor renuevas sus misericordias cada mañana!

(Lamentaciones 3:23) Al principio me aconsejaron que

reservara 15 minutes al día para la lectura spiritual,

además de mi tiempo de oración diario. te sorprenderás

de lo rápido que lees un libros de esta manera y cuanto

aprende al hacerlo lenta y deliberadamente. Siempre trato

de leer una pequeña parte del Antiguo testamento y el

Nuevo Testamento de la Biblia todos los días. En el gimna-

sio o en el automóvil a menudo escucho un poco de una

Buena charla de EWTN.COM, FORMED.ORG o una charla

de YOTUBE de uno de nuestros grandes oradores / confe-

rencias católicas. Entonces nos compartió una Buena no-

vela de (ficción) con una mezcla como uno de nuestros

sabios y viejos sacerdotes nos aconsejo hace años.

Hermanos y hermanas, les hago la misma pregunta que

me ha ayudado a lo largo del tiempo: ¿”Que están leyen-

do¿”Es decir, ¿Que están masticando y marinado en su

mente, corazón y alma? ¿Esta Bien? ¿Es hermoso? “Eres

lo que comes "como mi proyecto de ciencias de la escuela

primaria nos demostró hace mucho tiempo acerca de

nuestra dieta física. Lo mismo vale para nuestro espíritu.

Dios los bendiga en Jesús y María.

te la semana en la oficina, o después de la misa los domingos, con Eva.
